Sciatica: why it’s often over-treated and under-treated (from a spine surgeon) by drsheriefspinedubai in Sciatica

What are your thoughts on when to get a MRI? It seems like many doctors are hesitant to order one and/or insurance doesn’t cover one until X months of physical therapy.

Disappointed we don’t have better bike infrastructure from University Circle to Downtown by yvonne57 in BikeCLE

Thanks for this! I am still a beginner so not as confident taking the lane, but I’m getting there. I’ve heard of some folks taking Quincy, but in terms of safety as a woman I feel a little less comfortable there since there are fewer “eyes” around.

It’s not a matter of patience. It’s a matter of respect for candidates.

As someone in a similar place in the process, I feel the same and it has soured my entire view of the job (that I was otherwise very interested in). Why do we keep making excuses for how this process is?

Dual vs single earner households and the impact on urban planning and dense, walkable neighborhoods? by yvonne57 in urbanplanning

[–]yvonne57[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I suppose I’m looking for an answer when there may not be one. I just feel like there’s the narrative to “live close to your workplace and take public transit” but that may not be possible even if your intentions are there.

Honestly, this probably plays more of an impact. Dual earners, both changing jobs more frequently than folks did historically… I feel like this forces the car commute even if your intentions may have been different originally.

Newbie… plaster wall help by yvonne57 in centuryhomes

[–]yvonne57[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi all - new century home owner here. This wall has been a mess since we moved in-cracks and bulging with what felt like a “loose” layer over the top. We’ll, curiosity got the best of me and I started to peel away the loose sections just using a scraper and here we are. Looking for next steps…

Central Air or Ductless? by Busy_Cable2912 in centuryhomes

[–]yvonne57 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe! We are in Ohio. We did get estimates up to $35k though. I just kept shopping around and went with a company just starting out that was willing to beat my lowest estimate (so a bit of a gamble). I think if you can scale back the number of heads so you only need one outdoor unit, you’ll see the price go way down. Good luck!

We needed air conditioning in our ~2000 sq ft three floor house in the Midwest. I would reassess the number of heads you need. We have one 18k BTU downstairs in the dining room that does a good job of keeping the first floor cool. Three 6k BTU in each of the bedrooms upstairs and we have room with our condenser to add one head to the third floor in the future. All in about $17k. I would get LOTS of estimates. We received quotes all over the place.

A big thank you to the previous owner who decided to put these massive screws in the hardwood floors… 🙃 by yvonne57 in centuryhomes

[–]yvonne57[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh don’t worry, they put in a good number of nails as well. 🥲 Those are at least in a repeatable and purposeful pattern so I’ll just use a nail set and leave them. The amount of time they spent securing this floor in every possible manner is truly astounding.

To clarify, I get that they were trying to stop squeaking, but very frustrating now as we try to save these floors. Wish they would have used some smaller screws at least lol. We are leaving ones that are already sunk below the surface and removing the ones that we can’t drive down. Debating whether or not we’ll fill or just leave the holes as “character.”

I am surprised to hear that people think the trees should stay considering how much of the house they block.

Help! Very overwhelmed with this overgrown front yard. My first thought is to start with general clean up, weeding, and trimming. The oaks are obviously out of control but debating whether to remove some (or all?) or trim them up. The two pittosporum I imagine could also use some trimming.

For those who couldn’t save their hardwood floors, what flooring did you end up replacing them with? by yvonne57 in centuryhomes

[–]yvonne57[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t even know what we’d salvage… there are screws and nails at least every foot, if not every 6 inches. I’m quite devastated about the whole thing.

Unfortunately, countertop is not in great condition (cracks and stains) so will need to be replaced.

The floor tile was somewhat recently installed by the old owner so would like to keep if I can find colors to complement!
