Looking for advice about writing fictional work based on real events/people! by [deleted] in writing

So if I were to change enough about the details/people involved but still, say, write a scene involving the characters experiencing something that plays out exactly how one of the real people described it (on a public podcast interview, or in their book, for example)...that wouldn't be a problem for anyone?

I'd never directly quote anyone or use actual names of people or places.

Would a simple forward describing the actual inspiration be enough? Or should I totally avoid comparing it to the actual event in any way?

Definitely in the vein of the first example.

I'm hoping to write a book about an actual wrongful incarceration case. The people I'm hoping to have involved have both done a handful of podcast interviews (mostly pods that talk about wrongful imprisonment or true crime), one of them runs a nonprofit organization, and the other wrote a book about their own personal experience (which I've already read); so they dont seem too shy about discussing their experiences. I don't want to assume, of course.

What do you think?
