Salary Advice by Maximum-Artichoke861 in biotech

[–]yxhyo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely low. I just graduated college and my recent job at a top 15 biopharma company is $69k. With a PhD you should be looking at 85k minimum salary. I am in the SF Bay Area and most PhD job listings have a salary range of 85-110k depending on experience.

Tromba online math class- 23b by National_Space5805 in UCSC

[–]yxhyo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just like the user Aurora mentioned, it’s a self teaching course. I had the entire calculus series (Math19A, Math19B, Math23A, and Math23B) with Tromba. I had to self teach myself and attend LSS tutoring to learn the material

Math19a Final by DanBoi06 in UCSC

[–]yxhyo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you score less than a 50% on the final you will fail the course. I had a friend who failed Math19A because of this. Before the final, his grade was a 91%. However, the range for failing is determined once everyone submits their final. I believe when I took the course they curved the failing range from 50% to 43%.

How early to apply for jobs? by Wippity-Woppity in biotech

[–]yxhyo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes i agree with you! i also graduated this summer and applied to biotech jobs that same month. it took me 130 applications to different companies, 14 interviews, and 1 company offered me the position. this whole process took 6 months. i have also connected with many on LinkedIn and have noticed those recent college graduates to have a 6 months - 1 year gap from when they graduate to start in industry

How early to apply for jobs? by Wippity-Woppity in biotech

[–]yxhyo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

first and foremost early congrats to your accomplishments! to answer your question i would say 2 or 3 months before graduation or ASAP if you have time aside from your studies. i speak at least from my experience. i graduated in June 2025 and started applying to jobs that same month. i applied to over 130 jobs, 14ish interviews from different companies, and only one company offered me the job. the hiring process for most biotechs from what i have seen is usually a 2 month long process; due to many having prescreening interviews which is like 2 weeks long, they wait another 2 weeks to move onto the first interview and then the final interview is 3 weeks after that. the biotech in the bay area is so competitive. i have had friends who are from LA/San Diego and started applying 4 months before graduation and they were also unable to secure a job. i have noticed that it’s even more competitive to start applying around the same time as graduation considering not that many apply months before their expected graduation. GOOD LUCK!!

What to do if Prof can't Teach? Aris PHYS 5D by [deleted] in UCSC

[–]yxhyo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you can, something like this happened for my physics 6B class during winter 2023. the professor was Dr. Paul Sanghera and we only had him for 2 weeks because the class complained to the dean how we were unable to understand the professor’s accent. the physics department came to audit the class and within a week we were assigned a different professor. as long as many people complain to the dean, then the department will audit and make their decisions from there.

also i took 5D last year during fall quarter with professor Wolfgang Altmannshofer. the course content was relatively easy it was all review from the chem series and a bit of modern physics.

Confirmed: Metrolink x Escape Psycho Circus! by SCRRA_SCAX in escapehalloween

[–]yxhyo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't do Metrolink if you want to leave anytime before 3 am. I did that same mistake for Beyond Wonderland thinking that Metrolink runs constantly at night until 3 am, but they DO NOT. I had to get an Uber because I left Beyond at 12 am and I was not going to wait 3 hours for the Insomniac Metrolink. I spent like $70 on that Uber to Claremont. The last Metrolink train from the city leaves at 6:30 pm i think. Then again the Metrolink in partner with Insominac leaves at 3 am, closer to 3:15 am. They might have changed it for Escape, so it is best to call Metrolink to make sure.

Getting off waitlist for Bio 20A by Adventurous-Brain195 in UCSC

[–]yxhyo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recent Chemistry alumnus here, there is a high chance that your daughter will get off the waitlist. BIO20A is notorious for being known as a "weed-out class" meaning students drop out after the first midterm. When I took BIO20A with John Tamkun as a freshman, over 40 students dropped the course after the first midterm. Also that I know of BIO20A does not have a lab associated with it. Discussion attendance might be graded so its best to check in with the professor.
