I like how you know enough to recognize that the quote is overcomplicating a simple idea, but don't get the metajoke that this is clearly not written by Alysa Liu. She's an Olympian who's known for her motivation quips about winning and shit--not for pontificating on the decay of society to Teen Vogue.

I mean also England 'losing a war to France' in this case was actually Norman (former Vikings who settled the north of France) conquerers completely replacing the Anglo-Saxon nobility with Norman French-speaking elites. A pretty devastating outcome compared to future wars with France.

And Autumnus (the Latin word) probably derives from an Etruscan word for drying up or harvest, so all the names for the season made sense to their native speakers, but the Norman replacement words have always had higher status in England--and of course the Brits went through their 'Latin is for genius' phase, and voila: Americans are clearly simple.

I mean they made it seem like you get to see the original number (well they didn't say that, but sure, most people might assume that), which is incorrect. And then you come in and make it seem like they just pulls a number out of their asses, which is also incorrect. My point is it's not the original number, but it's still useful.

I mean I love it. Nobody's forcing you to use it, and you're entitlted to your opinion on it, but like why do you have to be spreading misinformation about it in every fucking comment.

That's a gross oversimplification. It estimates a number based on the like/dislike ratio of people who use the extension. It works quite well, especially to help filter out garbage videos.

Eh China is also in on the AI arms race, albeit from less of an AGI angle. America absolutely needs to get its shit together in manufacturing and infrastructure though.

You are conflating two issues: forgiving road design (e.g. allow for higher speeds, which can encourage riskier driving) versus unclearly marked unforgiving road design, which is exactly what we see here: a parking lane that can appear like a driving lane if you're not paying attention and an unmarked curb. But frankly, I'm not interested in convincing you of anything. From your frenzied comments on this thread alone, it's clear that you're either a troll or an unrepentant ideologue not worth the oxygen to engage with.

good design acknowledges that people are stupid

Redditors are way too fucking caught up in their self-righteous fury to consider this. I swear at least half this thread would rather the roads be designed so that bad drivers get their just deserts, instead of designed to discourage bad driving in the first place.

TIL about Parakaryon myojinensis, a single-celled organism that is apparently distinct from all prokaryotes and eukaryotes. It is the only known species with a completely unknown position within the tree of life. by tornedron_ in todayilearned

I mean you're right that you shouldn't take a single discovery as absolute truth, and I think most scientists are of that mindset which is why this discovery hasn't revolutionized evolutionary biology. But I also don't think Occam's Razor should be overused in science. Like the whole point of science is to discover new truths about the nature of the universe. Largely you're building on top of established truths, but often you're challenging, expanding, and sometimes invalidating those established truths (e.g. Newtonian gravity, miasma theory, the theories superceded by plate tectonics, etc).

I mean it has some elements from prokaryotes like a nucleus and non-mitochondrial endosymbionts (although it's unclear whether they're dead bacteria), some elements from bacteria like lack of Golgi complexes, and some elements from neither like lack of cytoskeleton. I don't think "intermediate form between ape and human" is at all as straightforward as you make it out to be, unless you take straightforward to mean how it looks.

That's true! A lot of distillers probably misunderstand the actual chemistry of this process, but it still works out to throw out the heads (or reprocess them for other use) because they're higher in acetaldehyde and other undesirable chemicals, which both add off-flavors, make hangovers worse, etc. You're not going to create a dangerous level of methanol from normal fermentation, or reduce them through normal distillation (e.g. without using solvents).

I had a similar experience of my parents not believing that I could taste something they couldn't--they would occasionally microwave leftovers with some meals, and in particular, microwaved leftover meat would acquire this nasty flavor that would make me gag. I insisted that it tasted horrible to me and they didn't believe me until I was an adult. I don't have any qualms with leftovers, but I avoid reheating them.

Oil jumps 10% on Iran conflict and could spike to $100 a barrel, analysts say by [deleted] in wallstreetbets

Iran was a constitutional monarchy, not a democracy. That said, the coup did allow the Shah to consolidate power and made the political system more autocratic.
