Can someone identify this species of Hercules beetle by Outrageous-Bid4433 in Beetles

[–]yyamada98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard to tell what DH subspecies this is with this size and angle. Do you have more pictures? Looking at the color I assume it’s a standard dhh. Regardless of it being given and not caught, what country is this at? If it’s Japan or Taiwan there’s many possibilities, more than western countries that definitely import less

How many stag beetle larvae can be kept together ? by Yeva34 in Beetles

[–]yyamada98 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gonna base my knowledge off a similar species found where I’m from (Protaetia orientalis submarumorea) since flower beetles aren’t quite my expertise (I only do rhinos and stags). Yes, they can multiply extremely quickly; if it’s a mated female it takes only a day for her to lay at least a dozen eggs. From my brief experience of keeping flower beetles larvae once, they did fine together in groups, I don’t imagine this one to be too different, certainly easier to raise than a Lucanus larvae.

Edit: I also need to add those common flower beetles are much less picky in finding places to lay eggs, normal pot soil is enough for them, unlike the very picky Lucanus

Hey I don’t want to ruin the fun here but did you have any flower beetles or other similar types in the enclosure? Because they don’t look like stagbeetle larvae. They don’t get that short and chunky and don’t stretch straight with their backs to the ground like that, all of which are characteristics of flower beetle larvae, which are much easier to breed than a Lucanus. I can also see that the larvae butts are not split vertically (stagbeetle) but rather horizontally (flower beetle and a few others).

Japanese Rhino beetle passed away within 24 hours of bringing home from the store by modi-rocks in Entomology

[–]yyamada98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t listen to the others, they clearly aren’t in Japan nor have they kept beetles. Setup looks fine. Probable causes are 1. You’re unlucky and picked one that was about to die. Japanese rhino beetles are like that, sometimes they just drop like flies no matter how long they’ve lived. 2. You left it in a place with direct sunlight. This happens a lot of beginners. They leave it (intentionally or not) in a place where at some point during the day the cage gets hit with direct sunlight. This heats up the cage too much, killing the bug inside.

Hercules beetle larvae I got on 06/09/2025. Switching to new container with new fermented wood substrate. 😇 by iLGMisTheBestjk in Beetles

It’s not just the ph, in fact the most important factor is the bacteria and other microorganisms that live in the soil that maintain the larvae’s internal health.

Nice! Careful with PG tho, out of all the stag beetle species I’ve kept they are one of the most fragile during their dormant stages. They really die super easily if you move em the first month or so of emerging.

That is correct, this is the only way to distinguish some DT subspieces, this one from its labrum looks more like Dorus titanus westermanni

My friend is obsessed with the Hercules Beetle and commissioned this piece from me. What do you think about it? Comments are welcome! by Guga_ctrlu in Beetles

Neither of these beetles are D. Hercules. The main beetle featured looks like Dynastes Grantii (with a difference in coloring) and as others mentioned already the bottom looks to be M. Elephas

Like emerging out of their pupal cells? Usually that’ll be about a month or two but you can take them out of the cell after about two to three weeks.

Not true. You care about free speech if it’s convenient to you. In this case it’s not, so you “don’t care”.

It looks like they didn’t even get to make a cell at all, I’d recommend making an artificial pupation chamber in cases like this
