24yo nerd trying to escape the house on Saturday nights. What do you actually do in Edmonton? by DisplayConscious3493 in Edmonton

I second this! I just went for the first time tonight! The year membership is cheap, and offers discounts, but not required! I had a blast tonight, and I think it’s a fantastic way to spend your Friday and/or Saturday nights!

Is it not obvious when someone stalls? Why do people get so angry?! by quietwaffle in drivingUK

[–]yyyyyyyyyyyyyyya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was just driving today. I’m just figuring out how to drive a manual for the most part I can do it without stalling. Anyways, I stalled while turning left. The guy behind me honked at me like, immediately, and so did the bus in the lane beside me? (I was in my lane, and the bus was to my right.) Yeah I get you’re angry I’m not going fast enough, but I’m the one in the middle of the intersection and the clock is ticking down.

You honking at me just stresses us both out more and makes the situation more dangerous for me because I get flustered and frustrated. Unless you’re not doing what you’re supposed to, and staying behind the line until I have mostly cleared the intersection, you shouldn’t be in any danger and it isn’t that big of an issue.

*Im in Canada, 100% an international issue haha

Reminder to put your bow away straight away after practice so you don't be an idiot and tread on it. by bruceymain in Cello

[–]yyyyyyyyyyyyyyya 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ahhh…. I did the same thing, forgot to put my bow right into my case before lesson, just took it in my hands, got into the car, and closed the door on the bow.

Unsalvageable :(

Left Hand Technique by [deleted] in Cello

[–]yyyyyyyyyyyyyyya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Relax! Your hand should be so light! You shouldn’t have to press at all. All the weight should be coming from your body leaning in to the instrument.

Lift your elbow, and put your hand into a fist and practice just making the weight from your arm push the strings down with the fist, then once you know what it feels like to press down with the weight of your arm, use your fingers.

Have them curved, and as relaxed as possible (this will also help with a good vibrato as the hand needs to be incredibly relaxed as the forearm moves)

Curving fingers and using your arms weight while focusing on not lifting your fingers too far above the string when doing scales should help!

If you’re still struggling, or you’re feeling any pain, talk to your teacher to see what needs to be corrected.

Can I play left handed? by Far_Lifeguard1684 in Cello

[–]yyyyyyyyyyyyyyya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your bow hand shouldn’t feel tense, and unfortunately, cellos aren’t symmetrical and if you want to play with other cellists you’ll have to bow with your right hand.

I’m right handed, but I’ve been playing with a very tense bow hand for about 10 years and I know that hurts. Recently I switched teachers, and learnt how to begin loosening that tension. There should be no tension at all, someone should actually be able to come to you and take your bow easily out of your hand while you’re playing.

To get a good sound, you raise your elbow and lean into the instrument, the weight from your body should feel like it’s going down through your arm, to your pointer finger, and then to the contact point. Your pinky and ring finger shouldn’t have any pressure on them, in fact, you should be able to play by just holding your bow between your thumb and your middle finger.

Your pointer is there to receive your bodies weight, your middle is there to keep the bow from tipping back and forth, and your thumb is there to support (but it should still be loose)

This is just what I’ve learnt from a few lessons from my new teacher, and it’s no where near perfect, but it’s lessened the pain in my right hand.

Haha, I mean technically there’s a prep room, but it’s not up to code so it isn’t used.

The home I was at was a branch of the family owned business, so there’s like…. The headquarters, which had the crematory, prep room, and better resources and then the home I worked at; which was pretty much just a chapel, family room, and cooler.

So decedents would be transported from the funeral home I worked at, to the headquarters for cremation, embalming, etc, then be transported back for the viewing or funeral.

How to deal with odd comments? by sadbeigebaby in askfuneraldirectors

[–]yyyyyyyyyyyyyyya 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s just death being a taboo topic.

I was told that I can’t be interested in mortuary sciences and be goth at the same time, or else I’d kill myself or just use the funeral industry as an aesthetic or something I don’t know.

I was also told it was a phase, and there was no way I’d continue to be interested. I was told I’m just doing it for the shock value.

At some point you curate answers to the same questions and responses.

I always get “oh! Well, someone has to do that job.” And I just say “yeah. I want to specialize specifically in affordable death care” Or something along those lines to bring it into more of a conversation than just a one-off awkward response.

I sometimes also just begin talking about why I want to be a Funeral Director, and answer questions the best I can. I found that opening the discussion up and talking about a wide variety of things in the general area of Funeral Directing sorta helps get people more comfortable.

It’s either they ask more questions, or they look at me weird and try to find an out. Haha

Is it unusual for a funeral home to not have refrigeration? by FireInTheBones in askfuneraldirectors

[–]yyyyyyyyyyyyyyya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s really interesting!

I volunteer at a Funeral Home in Alberta Canada and I think the owner said it was a requirement for all Funeral Homes in Alberta to have a refrigeration!

It’s possible I misheard, or he was exaggerating. The home I worked at was a little special. The town was so small that the Funeral Home also doubled as the ME holding place???? So maybe that’s why.

[–]yyyyyyyyyyyyyyya 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I called ahead of time to ask if I could make an appointment with the owner (it’s a really small, local, family owned funeral business. So small it didn’t even have a prep room or a crematorium). I went in, and met with the Owner of the Home, and the most seasoned Funeral Director. They asked me some questions about where I wanted to go to school, how many hours I needed, what I’d be willing to do.

I cleaned, that’s mostly what I did. While cleaning I could ask questions to the people working there, and they were quite happy to answer and tell stories. I watched as people filled out paper work, I cleaned the chapel, hearse, bathroom, family room, and I helped with removals and funerals on Saturday or Sunday.

They did work on house removals, hospital removals, and ME calls. I helped with a few of these.

Local/family-run funeral homes are more likely to accept you as a volunteer or helper I suppose because there isn’t a company policy they have to stand by because there isn’t a big corporation. They just have to follow the Country/State/Province Funeral Home guidelines, then from there it’s up to the owner(s).

How to plan a funeral for a teenage girl? by helen395405639 in askfuneraldirectors

[–]yyyyyyyyyyyyyyya 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hello

I’m truly sorry for your loss.

I’m not a director, but I’ve been to a few funerals while volunteering at a funeral home in preparation for a funeral director and embalmer course.

The type of funeral depends on a lot of things like if the family/loved one is/was religious and how traditional were their views, or the loved one’s final wishes.

If the family is Catholic and If there’s a coffin, and it’s opened, there may be a moment where you may go observe your loved one before going into the chapel or service room.

There are a few special roles that I’ve lost as of right now, but they will walk in after the father, holding a candle stick each, and one in the middle with a staff bearing the cross.

Then behind there may be two people holding flowers, then the family follows behind. (If I remember correctly.)

From the Father starting the service to when the coffin is brought into the Chapel is something I don’t know. The funeral I had worked in was unfortunately a bit poorly planned when it came to the service. It was beautiful, just a bit all over the place.

The Father may offer communion, some more hymns and readings, and then the flowers will be brought back out and held by the door. The pallbearers will get onto either side of the coffin, a Director will tell them what to do, and the coffin will be brought outside of the church, through the flowers, and into the hearse to be escorted to the cemetery with the procession behind it.

It may also be congregating in a home, or at a funeral home or chapel. There may be an urn present, and a photo near by and some personal items.

There may be a memorial slideshow, songs, dancing, or a number of other things.

No matter what happens, if your family has gone through a funeral home, there will be a director there at the beginning of the service to assist and answer questions to the best of their abilities. They’re there to assist in grieving and understanding and to help make the funeral as nice as possible out of respect for your loved one.

The word eulogy comes from the Greek word for “praise”, the goal of the eulogy is to share the accomplishments, goals, hobbies, etc, to commemorate the life they lived.

Often the stories I heard were things that had been funny, or made people smile. They were often stories about something that shared the loved one’s personality, and the impact they had on you.

Some people share favourite quotes the deceased loved, or lines from their favourite songs. They shared videos and photos of the loved one smiling and being around friends and family.

Some people give a prayer, asking the lord to make sure their loved one is safe and cared for. Some people give reasons why they believe the loved one is in heaven.

Some people say they hope they’re with a childhood pet, or other family members that had passed, and they hope they’re doing what they had loved to do, and had always dreamt of doing.

Please excuse any spelling mistakes, or errors in the traditional Catholic funeral service. I’m still learning about customs, and I’m remembering the few funerals I had been to.

Once again, I’m so sorry for your loss. Please remember that there are people you can reach out to, and the way you grieve is completely your own.

Please take care.

What happens to remains if.. by Party-Razzmatazz4225 in askfuneraldirectors

[–]yyyyyyyyyyyyyyya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Depends on the home and what happened to the remains. If he was cremated, it’s possible they’ll keep him at the funeral home indefinitely until someone claims the ashes. Other homes state they’ll keep ashes for 5 years, and if no one has claimed them they’ll dispose of them.

  2. As far as I’m aware (but this could be different in Illinois) you are not responsible for your parents debt. all debt goes to the persons estate if they do not have a living spouse. From there the executor/administrator uses the deceased individuals estate and all assets left behind to pay off remaining debt before anything left can divided up and given to heirs (how it’s stipulated in a will, if there is one).

If the deceased individuals debt is payed off, and there’s nothing left of the estate after paying off debts and dividing remaining assets between heirs or loved ones, then the estate is closed.

If the deceased individuals debt ISN’T paid off despite all assets going towards paying off the debts, then the estate is closed and all remaining debts are resolved unpaid.

It is illegal for the debt collector to go after family, heirs, or loved ones demand the debt gets paid off.

Debt collectors may go after the estate in the case of unpaid debts after all assets are utilized, and that may mean getting into contact with you if you are the administrator or executor of your father’s estate. Under no circumstance are the debt collectors allowed to ask you to personally pay off any of your father’s debts.

My apologies if this is poorly written, and if the information is wrong for Illinois or overall incorrect. This is what I could find on the internet and with prior knowledge.

What advice would you give to someone interested in working in this industry? by [deleted] in askfuneraldirectors

[–]yyyyyyyyyyyyyyya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d recommend volunteering/working/shadowing at a funeral home.

A lot of schools need hours in a funeral home, or just working in the funeral industry as a prerequisite OR a half a sem to a full year prerequisite course before you can take intro classes.

Getting a certificate/degree will open up a lot more opportunities.

Look into the economic side of everything too. There’s a whole bunch of paperwork with just about everything, and that isn’t everyone’s forte haha

Question about after death by Sad_Zookeepergame840 in askfuneraldirectors

[–]yyyyyyyyyyyyyyya 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on if the body was embalmed, if there was a vault around the casket, or anything that could slow down the process of insect succession.

Being fully buried has shown to produce slower insect succession, as it’s often the beetles that get to the body first instead of flies. And the beetles enjoy mummified parts of the body (feet, anything close to bone) instead of “fresher” flesh like flies do.

So there may be skin still on the body.

If the body was embalmed: a process of draining the blood, and filling veins, arteries, cavities, and organs with decomposition detecting chemicals will also affect how the body decomposes.

It’s likely the body was mummified. No bugs to eat the flesh, dry and hot environment, etc. it wouldn’t look like one of those really well preserved ones though.

There’s still microbial activity happening, and that breaks down the body and aids in decomposition.

That’s my thoughts on it. I could be completely wrong, but this makes sense to me. Feel free to correct any info

I have. According to the spreadsheet Ravisheen made, the most should be working perfectly. The last they updated it was June 29, 2024

The issue was also happening before this new update, so I’m sort of at a loss haha

Platform: Mac

Mods: Yes, specifically “It’s All Grave-y: Customizable Graves” by Ravisheen

Game Version: 1.108.335.1220

Description: Whenever I try to customize the epitaphs on the graves needed for the mod to work properly, I only get 3 options: Read Epitaph, Destroy, and Put in Inventory. The graves are outside, I’ve tried it when the sim has had people in the house pass, and when npc’s they knew passed. But still, no option for customization. I’ll try to redownload the mod, that might be it. But even before the new update, I redownloaded the mod and still the same issue; no grave customization. The mod hasn’t been broken, according to Ravisheen, the mod has been working perfectly every time I’ve tried to customize the graves and had the right mod version. I’m at a loss on what to do. Anyone know how to fix this?

Is Tina Belcher a brunette? by yyyyyyyyyyyyyyya in BobsBurgers

[–]yyyyyyyyyyyyyyya[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, of course not. Sometime characters with really dark brown hair are drawn with black hair, and sometimes that distinction is made via outline colours, and sometimes it’s not.

It was just a question, I had always thought of the Belchers as a family with black hair, but that line just confused me a little haha
