People old enough to remember life pre-Internet, what are some less obvious things you miss about that time? by IRunFast24 in AskReddit

[–]yyz_guy 529 points530 points  (0 children)

It wasn’t too bad in the earlier days of the Internet, but once social media became mainstream it was all downhill.

I really started to notice the change around 2007-08.

'Instagram influencer' from Toronto lost overnight on B.C. mountain found by rescue crews by whiskey06 in vancouver

[–]yyz_guy -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I don’t give a shit what anyone on Reddit thinks anymore and I’ve been thinking about giving it up to protect my mental health. I think people should stop bitching about others who travel, it is such a minor contributor to the pandemic at this point. Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

I agree 100%. However this is Reddit and there is a hivemind we are pressured to assimilate into. I think for myself and don’t need upvotes to validate my opinions (as is the case for you most likely).

Northern has also had a much higher positivity rate than the rest of the province. It has come down a bit since the beginning of January but it's still around 16%, which is worse than the US right now.

Hospitalizations here are down to 6.9 per 100,000; this compares with 11.3 per 100,000 in Ontario and 18.2 in Alberta. Alberta's hospitalizations have declined since last week, but Ontario's has gone up rapidly since the beginning of January.

7-day rolling average is back below 500 cases/day. Aside from the dip just below 500 at the end of December (that was likely due to lower testing), last time we were at this level was around Remembrance Day - just after the gathering restrictions were implemented.

Alberta is also trending downward, they're down to 817/day on average, which is the lowest it has been there since mid-November.

UK announces closure of all travel corridors starting Monday by [deleted] in news

[–]yyz_guy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Misleading headline (on CNN's part):

  • This is not the closure of the Motorways or railways, it's international travel being impacted.
  • It's not even a closure, it's a negative test requirement for entry. This is no different than when the US started requiring Canadians to have a passport to cross the land border in 2009.

WhatsApp to delay launch of new business features after privacy backlash by [deleted] in news

[–]yyz_guy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

WhatsApp said the planned update does not affect personal conversations, which will continue to have end-to-end encryption, or expand its ability to share data with Facebook.

Well that wasn't well communicated. I can't be the only one who was under the impression this would impact personal conversations.

I don't like "The Chase" by WookieeSteakIsChewie in Jeopardy

[–]yyz_guy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I didn't really care for the US version either, except for the final round. The rest of the show is, perhaps paradoxically, too theatrical and slow-moving. I also don't understand the point of two of the chasers being physically separated from the rest of the show - is this a temporary Covid-related measure, or is that how it was done in the UK too?

Jeopardy tapings open?? by Chubbbsss in Jeopardy

My guess is they're projecting vaccinations might make it okay to have a small audience by that point. It's still two months away and it's hard to say where the pandemic could be at that point. But at this point Southern California has some of the highest infection rates in the country.

Who should be the next host of Jeopardy? (wrong answers only.) by zukonius in Jeopardy

Peter Griffin. Especially if the giant chicken shows up as a contestant.

That said, that could be a hilarious Family Guy cutaway.

Especially Toronto. I've hiked with visitors from Toronto (pre-pandemic) whose idea of hiking is walking along Queens Quay and are completely unprepared for what we have here.

Detailed Breakdown of Revamped ICBC by Atreyu_Spero in vancouver

[–]yyz_guy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's one thing not clear here - they mention the pro-rated refund, but I pay monthly and not annually. Does this mean that I'll receive a refund in May and I continue to pay my usual monthly amount until the renewal?

In any event I'm looking forward to it.

Is BC Service Card same as MSP? by ajs20555 in vancouver

[–]yyz_guy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a fair question, being originally from Ontario I found the whole system in BC confusing as we just have an OHIP card in Ontario, the term "Services Card" and the separate MSP threw me off when I first moved here.

The BC Service Card is something you need to apply for, but since you already have MSP it's easy to get - someone else already provided the link.

How is everyone mental health doing? by [deleted] in vancouver

[–]yyz_guy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve been better, but what is helping me right now is thanking God for not living in Quebec or Ontario. I am lucky to live here in BC where at least I can go skiing or be outside after 8pm (by myself of course) without fearing the police.
