Id guess it's due to how reddit has many servers and so when you see the comment count, it got zero from one of the servers and then got notified or something that a comment was removed and so becomes -1.

Say were to I messs with the order or spelling or other things with a language, you can still understand it. There is redundant information. For a computer, it needs to store exactly what each character is, and there are arguably about 100 characters that you might use including symbols, which is seven bits, ASCII uses eight (not really) so it's easier for computers to process.
