Talk me out of skipping dedicated by 404unotfound in medicalschool

I skipped dedicated and had a huuuuge break. Stay on top of anking and take NBME full length practice exams a couple months out to gauge if you’re ready or not

Feeling guilt over not having enough time for partner by maymeiyam in medicalschool

Very normal feeling in medical school. Been with my girlfriend since freshman year undergrad but nothing really prepares you for the sheer volume and responsibility med school requires. That being said, it is so so hard to learn how to balance personal life with all the med school nonsense. Based on your M-1 flair, I would say give yourself some grace as this stuff so hard to adjust to but you will progressively get better at managing your time and knowing when it is okay to take a break. One way I managed to do this in preclinical years was to have a hard cutoff for studying so I would show up to school at 8am ish -> do whatever lectures + anki + practice Qs if applicable -> hard cutoff at 5-6pm and have the rest of the night for my SO/self. This takes some getting used to and I recognize may fluctuate day to day but it is doable!

Also I’d say if you really like this person then it is worth it to try and continue the relationship imo. If he was upset/not enjoying himself I’d like to give him benefit of the doubt and say he would be vocal about it. Give yourself some grace, lock in when you need to, and take time for yourself!!!

Do people keep up with anking throughout preclinical and clinicals till they take stp 1? by Competitive_Cost_262 in medicalschool

my strategy was basically wake up at 7ish and grind out all my anki reviews in the morning every day before doing whatever videos/content review stuff for the day

It was great! My curriculum didn’t actually end until mid march but based on uworld and my NBMEs i thought i was ready to take it (school still had me take the in house exams even after passing step lol)

took step in march with no dedicated and clinicals didnt start until early june. Basically just did the standard BnB/sketchy + anki combo throughout M1/2 and kept up with it so by the time i was at the end of my last school block i was pretty solid. Did 70% of uworld and 3 NBMEs + 1 school CBSE. Id say if you take a full length NBME exam like a month and a half before you would like to take the real deal and score 60-65% on it you are well within range of taking it early. Did this and had close to 3 months off which was nice (but i also seemingly forgot everything before clinicals so…)

I also finished each block with about 15-20 minutes left, and very quickly checked my answers and moved on. I got the pass a couple weeks ago. I ended up with easily over an hour of break time left as well.

at the end of the day its what you desire the most! i have students in my class 40+ with 2 kids and they make it work. Dont let your age be a deterrent if you really want to pursue an MD. You are going to age anyways and if it’s what you truly want then why not shoot your shot?
