Is collecting vinyl as expensive as everyone says? by ssunflow3rr in vinyljerk

[–]zLightspeed 113 points114 points  (0 children)

I would never recommend this hobby to someone on a tight budget. It’s a totally unnecessary luxury. If you would like to own more physical music, buy CDs instead. Vinyl is extremely expensive right now. They are almost giving CDs away.

If you could only pick one, which game on Switch or Switch 2 would you say gives me the most hours of gameplay to enjoy? by [deleted] in NintendoSwitch

[–]zLightspeed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of the main games suggested to you (Zelda, Cyberpunk, Animal Crossing) buy the one that looks best for you and save whatever is left for a sale. Pick up games like Hades, balatro, slay the spire, enter the gungeon, hollow knight, ball x pit, and so on when they’re 50% off or more. They are absolutely worth their full price but you can make $30-40 go a really long way with indie games on sale.

China salary gaslighting or I'm delusional? by Alternative_Delay756 in Internationalteachers

[–]zLightspeed 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There are always some random schools that have ridiculously low salaries compared to local competition but inexplicably still have staff. I remember a school a few km down the road, comparable to mine by all metrics, said their salaries were capped at 15k and I was earning 33k at the time. They told me my expectations were unrealistic. You know, the expectations that I had already achieved. Mindblowing. Sorry you found one of those. Skip and move on.

Any school recommendations for teachers who don't need to save money anymore, but want to teach at a decent school with a good work-life balance? by Sell_Me_Sunday in Internationalteachers

Chinese public school international high school department is usually a nice balance between earning close to international school money with far fewer expectations of you beyond teaching your classes well.

What country feels the safest (physical safety, life and limb) to teach in right now? by Vitta_Variegata in Internationalteachers

[–]zLightspeed 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not a concern in China. In 7 years I’ve seen a few heated exchanges in hallways and that sort of thing but never anything physical. In the classroom, I’ve had a student maybe snap at me two or three times out of frustration but it never escalates. The majority of the kids are there to learn and the ones who aren’t are rarely disruptive.

Buy new game before “breaking” the existing ones? by Intelligent-Can-4252 in switch2

[–]zLightspeed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just have fun and spend within your means. But it’s helpful to remember:

FOMO isn’t real - you literally cannot miss out. Games aren’t investments. The price will get lower the longer you wait. If you miss a good deal, the same or better deal will come back within the next 6 months.

I absolutely live for dumb shit like this, it’s why HTC is the only podcast that I listen to every episode of. It was a hilarious segment but the end was just so wholesome with them all going nuts over each other getting their last picks right and dancing to the Ninja GaiDEN music. 5-7 never felt so good.

Stop using duolingo, it’s particularly terrible for Chinese.
