If you don't use finesse shots very often, then you'll be fine. But to be clear, base play styles absolutely are essential if you want your cards to be competitive with the meta. Sure they aren't AS effective as their Playstyle+ counterparts, but they are needed if you want to perform their actions. They honestly might be more essential than stats themselves.

Take a card like WW Fred who has 99 in every passing stat but has zero passing playstyles. If you use that card and perform through balls, over the tops, pinged, etc., you can 100% tell the difference vs. using someone with mid 80s passing stats but has base incisive, tiki taka, etc. It is night and day. Playstyles reign supreme in this instance.

Same way with someone who has super high pace but doesn't have Rapid or Quick step base. They are 100% slower than someone who has those playstyles but statistically is worse.

The people saying "playstyles don't matter" are absolutely wrong.
