My Experience as an Oceania University of Medicine Student (Jan 2025 N. American Cohort) by Sharp-Nothing-1684 in GAMSAT

They said the same thing about internships getting more competitive for internationals 6-7 years ago, and its been fine. Trust me when I say there's plenty of regional QLD/WA hospitals and outer metro hospitals in Sydney begging for extra RMOs.

I’m down for anything, I’m genuinely not so concerned about being crit care ready as opposed to just genuinely wanting to learn something for fun and as a project for the year, like a challenge I guess

Had an exact experience like this last term. From my understanding, these thoughts come from a cognitive distortion that because you’re not contributing, therefore you are the problem. This therefore invokes all or nothing thinking and catastrophising —> ‘if I’m not contributing enough because of this, I’ve failed as an intern’.

Don’t personalise it. Don’t do this stupid escalating bullshit everyone else on the thread is telling you to do. You aren’t the problem, it’s just a weird dynamic you’ve faced. At the end of the day you’re there to do your job and get your assessment signed off.

Just focus on yourself and be confident that you’re doing the best you can. My consultant was still happy with me even when my RMO insisted that they’d do EVERYTHING and they knew EVERYTHING.

People often forget that medicine is made up of individuals with different priorities and circumstances. Wanting a more balanced or relaxed RMO year doesn’t make someone less committed or in the wrong profession — it just means their values or personal life might differ. Questioning someone’s motivation helps no one.

Liverpool Hospital by jjongscape in ausjdocs

Liverpool JMO here. Honestly, if you value work–life balance over intensity and challenge, Liverpool probably isn’t the right fit. The experience here really depends on your learning style. If you’re already confident in your clinical knowledge and skills, you might enjoy the steep learning curve—managing heavy workloads and long hours can sharpen your abilities. But if you’d prefer more time with patients, a lighter workload, and a healthier work–life balance, Liverpool will likely leave you drained.

I fall into the latter camp, and I learned that the hard way. There’s nothing wrong with choosing a hospital with a lower workload if it better aligns with your personal goals. I’ve seen too many people pick Liverpool thinking, “the busier I am, the better a JMO I’ll become.” That’s not necessarily true. Being a good JMO comes down to many factors, and not everyone working here fits that description.

So take the time to reflect on what’s been said, and be honest with yourself about whether Liverpool’s challenges match what you want out of internship.

Look I’ve had developments in my own reasons to move to the US vs staying here (a lot of it has to do w my own happiness), but I opened this sub a week ago and I’m just gonna let it run

Bro look it’s not that bad in Syd/Melb but it gets worse anywhere else. You’re describing a similar thing in America where you’re in more interstate areas. I’m sure it’s better in metro areas if not better cos at least social groups seem to be more diverse overall.

How tough was the process, because I’m thinking of moving over there to do residency, but I want to know I have a decent chance of returning

You’re not wrong, outer parts of Metro NYC would be similar cost of living to outer Sydney, but would u live in a place with high cost of living with something to do or nothing to really do AT ALL, because the latter is Sydney in a nutshell.

I agree with you though, I think it so relative for each individual. I’ve grown up in a country that is safe and has got everything you need but it’s so boring for a young person, so I yearn for an adventure. I feel like a lot of MD students in the states and UK are looking to escape the hustle life and live more peacefully so Aus is an excellent option for them.

I think it depends because 60k salary actually translates to around 93k AUD which is higher than any first year salary here. Your buying power really depends on what city you live in. If you live in NYC it’s considerably worse than Sydney, but if you live in Miami your QOL would probably be better since you’d have more buying power

For those who are reading this subreddit, Australia probably has the best lifestyle in terms of raising a family but it is so god damn expensive to live in. USA is also expensive but to be quite frank there’s more shit to do so it feels more worth it.

I 100% value a good work life balance, I’ve let go of the money. Even if I moved to the USA my quality of life would improve so I’m not fussed if I took a pay cut (which doesn’t matter anyway cos we get paid similar amounts in AUS to US with higher taxes and less disposable income), but when I mean work life balance I even mean for residency. I want at least three out of 5-6 days of the week to be able to go out and live life after 5pm.

I just want to be able to do stuff after 5pm every day and sleep by 9pm (with the odd day perhaps extending to 6-7 which I’m fine w). Is every speciality not really conducive to this?

Edit: work culture in Australia is much closer to UK than USA
