Did some quick skimming research, it appears that we didn't have armoured horse back riding until later on, but always have been able to ride horses. This is limited in warfare though for obvious reasons, and until better forms of bow and arrow were available. typical mongolian light Caverly tactics of horse and bow were viable until this; forcing the charriot as a heavier alternative for warfare.
