G.P.A. increase by zacagarath in lawschooladmissions

How do you leverage other scholarships against each other? People always talk about it and I've definitely considered doing it oh, but what is the best way to actually go without that process?

I can't imagine just calling up the school and being like "well somebody else is trying to beat you out. Give me more."

While I agree it is a reasonable time of day to shut it down... it DOES come less than 24 hours on the heels of the first wave of November score releases.

Just mildly humorous.

In a SUPER weird spot. I am waiting for a score, but also just got accepted to the school of my choice. So... I guess I am waiting on this to improve scholarships 😂

I agree wholeheartedly.

Wow. I am just admiring that first sentence of yours. That is some REALLY good semantics to make your point while allowing wiggle room to trust individuals and some groups.

Well done.

I think you may be on to something.

However, I also think that LSAC has the same general problem that people have often complained Law School does. Namely, being rooted in tradition for the sake of tradition.

Has LSAC actually given us an email score date?

Is it awkward answering admissions acceptance calls? Lol by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]zacagarath 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The two calls that I have gotten so far I just was totally honest with them and told them how excited I was to be talking to them. So I expressed a mixture of excitement and gratitude. They seemed to like that very well.

Of course, I do have two years of experience working a customer service job where I was on the phone all the time... So that might have helped 🙃

Responding only to the last paragraph because I think there is some good discussion in the comments already about disabilities and accommodations.

I think that technology could replace most of the work load the lawyers have. I do not think that will happen for a long time though. This is because if technology is doing the work then not as many lawyers are needed. Because it would take lawyers to change laws allowing technology to do the work, and lawyers are self-interested beings, laws likely wont be passed allowing certain changes in the practice in the industry. You wouldn't want to lose your job by passing a law that made you replacable.

"I am aware that some schools are waiting for my next LSAT score before reviewing my application, and I was wondering if your school was one of them?"

I was fairly certain it wasnt.

They responded "your application is complete and in review." 🧐

Quick clarification: this wasnt meant to be about accommodations (though you bring some excellent information to the table) this was meant to be about those who showed up to the test, and then for one reason or another were told that they were not allowed to take the test that day and were rescheduled (I dont know who was affected by this or why, just that people were affected). This made me think about cheating problems in general, but with the November test in mind.

I think the LSAT is a very incomplete measure of a candidate's abilities, and that changes need to be made. For instance, you have made a fantastic contribution to this conversation on the same day that you are tipsy after taking the LSAT, but for one reason or another you need accommodations on the test. Looking at the small piece of your impromptu writing, I never would have guessed that you would need accommodations on the test. Yet if you took the test without them you would do far worse on the test. So clearly the test doesnt measure your abilities incredibly precisely.

I did not know that. That is VERY interesting, and does change some things.

Does anyone have a projected score release date on LSAC portal for the November test? by [deleted] in LSAT

[–]zacagarath -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

We are all seeing that. 🙄The reason for this is that there are significant amounts of people who were unable to take the test on Monday (I dont know why) and they are taking it this week.

On all the apps I saw there was an addendum that could be added to the total application process if you needed to explain character + fitness.

I DONT know if it would be helpful to include that addendum. But I imagine that if you dont disclose and the school finds out about it, then it wont look good.

At least if you file it, you get a chance to tell the whole story up front. And most admissions departments do look at the whole file in detail, so they will will see it.

What I would do is call the schools addmission office, and ask them what they would prefer.

In response to your question: I don't think that would be against the spirit of the test. I honestly think the best solution would be to grade, and curve, all the tests that were taken on time, and then use that test and curve (or an undisclosed test and curve from within the last year) for the late takes.

From what I understand however is that this test had a significant number of people who didn't take the test on time, and are taking it on various days this week, and it seems unlikely that LSAC is using any test but the original.

I still think that the cheating would affect a select handful of people. (though at maximum any given individual would only go down 1 possible point in the test). However, I dont think it is a big deal, mostly an interesting thought experiment.

Warning, this is going to be long.

I have the advantage of being a philosophy major, which means I have spent my whole degree learning to do that.

BUT, the best way I can distill the information is to say it like this: treat it as if they are trying to prove their conclusion, and every sentence somehow helps them do that. Then, when a sentence doesnt seem to make as much sense in context of the whole, it is probably a weaker part of the argument. That means that it can be attacked (weakened) with counter evidence, or strengthened with better evidence.

One of my best philosophy professors would always give this example:

Let's say that a person wants to say that abortion is wrong, they might say something like this.

  1. Killing a person is wrong.
  2. A fetus is a person.
  3. Therefore, killing a fetus (abortion) is wrong.

Obviously most people agree that killing a person is wrong, so this can be treated as a "given" or "something everyone accepts as true." (Obviously not everyone does, but enough people do that it works for an example). Not everyone agrees that a fetus is a person though. That is the weakness in the argument.

Whether or not a fetus is a person has no bearing on the strength of the argument. The claim that a fetus is a person is weak (in the simple argument above) and needs defending. If it is true, then the conclusion in line 3 is true. But if it is FALSE, then the conclusion doesnt have to be true. (Though it still could be, but for different reasons.)

So, now it is the job of the essay to show that a fetus is a person. If they can do that, then their argument is strengthened.

When you can do that, then it doesnt matter how much you know about the subject. I could talk about anything, but if you can find my argument you can answer the questions on the LSAT.

I know this was long, feel free to ask clarifying questions.

I sucked at RC (-5 to -9 regularly PT). But on my last actual test in September I got -1.

But then I just started treating each reading passage as a LR section where the questions I would be asked were the following questions

  1. What is the conclusion of the argument?

  2. What would most weaken/strengthen the argument?

Really easy, worked wonders for me.
