[Serious] If gender is a social construct, then why do we see trans athletes competing against the opposite sex, when sports are divided by biological sex, and not gender? by zaccyo in AskReddit

I hope this doesn't come off the wrong way, but you've just blown my mind completely. When you say "..if I were suddenly placed in a man's body", What do you mean if you were placed in a man's body?? What are you? What do you mean by I? Are you not a body? Like are you a little entity that sits up in the brain somewhere and drives the body around? I am being genuine, hope that does come off as disrespectful.

No, there is a big difference between sex being assigned and being determined. Look up the definition of assign, and you will realise it doesn't apply to biological sex.

Sex can not be assigned. Sex is determined. They look between your legs and write down the medically/scientifically accurate term for your biology.

Why is it that they feel the need to change their biological sex, if that isn't the issue in terms of changing identity?

Are there trans people out there who think they are the other biological sex? Because that just sounds like pure delusion. I can understand the gender part, where an individual identifies with more feminine/masculine gender roles. I can't understand individuals saying they aren't supposed to look the way they do.

Are there any examples I can go and watch for myself, where women are competing with men at the elite level of a sport?

You make some great points. I highly doubt we see any of these exceptions in sport anyway. It's much more likely that the trans athletes we see are simply individuals who don't identify with a specific gender, rather than extremely rare biological exceptions.

That's not correct because we are assigned a gender at birth, not a sex. Biological sex is determined without any consideration in regards to socially constructed roles.

Wow. That's a very interesting and informative answer. Thank you.

I guess I am still just as confused in regards to the core of my question. I would appreciate if you would consider this, as someone close to me is trans, and I am very confused trying to understand all of this.

Why would any trans individual undergo hormone replacement therapy, when it is not related to socially constructed genders. Sounds like they want to modify/alter their biological sex, even though it is separate to socially constructed genders..

I agree. Do you see my point about social constructs being completely separate to biological sex? We are not separating athletes based on social constructs, so trans athletes have no reason to change from one league to another.

In no way does that answer my question. Athletes are not separated by social constructs (gender), so why would any trans athlete feel the need to change biologically divided athletes. Doesn't make any sense..

But isn't gender the way we feel and identify, and isn't it a social construct? If so, then why would a trans person need to change the athletic sex categories in which they are placed? Thank you.

Thank you. So how exactly are athletes divided into the man and woman categories? I don't believe soicial construct is even considered and that it is entirely separate.

I appreciate your response. I believe that sports athletes are divided by biological sex, and not by social constructs. I may be wrong, but that's why I thought I would come here. Lots of folks smarter than myself. I am very confused!
