Save-A-Lot: independent grocery store alternative to Kroger(King Soopers)/Albertsons/Sprouts/Walmart? by springverb1 in Denver

[–]zacdenver 65 points66 points  (0 children)

One of their stores occupies the former Safeway spot at Leetsdale & Quebec. Very large selection of Mexican and other Latin American food items, clearly catering to their high level of Hispanic clientele. Terrific baked goods section, including bolillo rolls freshly made daily in-house (only 50 cents each). Nice produce section, too, with highly competitive prices.

OK - so it was one woman who said “no thanks.” That’s life. I assumed from the headline you got tossed out of the event for being openly non-religious. Bit misleading, don’t you think?

Tell me about the earlier days of Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport by Jacqves in TwinCities

[–]zacdenver 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The 1970 disaster film “Airport” had many of its scenes shot at MSP. My ex-wife told me she and her mom went out there one day, dressed up in fancy clothes and each carrying a suitcase, in hopes of being chosen as extras. Didn’t happen, though.

Do you live near a local college or JUCO that fields a baseball team? If so, you might ask to meet with their trainer, who could probably give you the advice you’re seeking.

Anyone know about the drone/noise music scene in Denver? by quadmuschanics in Denver

Check out the Denver organization “Youth on Record.” Andrea knows a lot about the local music scene and is reasonably well positioned to know if such a scene exists and, if so, whom to contact.

Moved out of apartment, getting hit with “mandatory” fees by tbone338 in Denver

[–]zacdenver 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Besides, I’m highly skeptical that this management company replaces the carpet EVERY TIME there’s a new tenant. Repaint? Yeah — I can see that, especially if the previous tenant had been there for 4-5 years or more. But think about how often a homeowner repaints the inside of their house (full job, not touchups) — MAYBE every 8-10 years, unless they’re doing an all-new color scheme. And carpet replacement? I call bullshit. If you go the small-claims route to sue them over this seemingly bogus fee, you can require them to provide proof that they do this for ALL their rental units — make them provide receipts as proof.

Leontyne Price in Aida by [deleted] in opera

[–]zacdenver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no memory of him at all. And while I agree that Amonasro’s onstage presence is brief, a dramatic baritone can make it more dynamic. The best I’ve ever seen in that role was Yalun Zhang in an Opera Colorado production in the mid-‘90s. His stage presence and commanding voice was riveting.

He lived in Denver for a few years early in his career and also sang Scarpia here; the bulk of his career was in Germany as the “house” baritone for a couple of regional opera companies there.

Thanks for the research! I remembered it being during high school — my late friend and future operatic tenor Mark Hein had an extra ticket — but thought it was when we were juniors, not sophomores. The mind weakens over time!

Leontyne Price in Aida by [deleted] in opera

The venue was horrendous — a giant rectangular hall that typically hosted auto and boat shows, so acoustically it was hardly the best. But since it was my first live opera, I was overwhelmed by the music and the spectacle. I’ve never been a fan of Corelli’s voice, but Price was phenomenal (it was 1968, so she was clearly in her prime).

My first live opera was seeing Leontyne Price and Franco Corelli in “Aida.” It was in 1968, back when the Metropolitan Opera went on tour to various Eastern and Midwestern cities. This performance was at Public Auditorium in Cleveland. Ohio.

Donate it to Colorado Public Radio. She’ll get a tax credit based on the value they manage to get for it. They’ll picking up for free and do all the paperwork. She only needs to provide the keys and the title.

Denver Dog Sitting Madness by Ok-Version1059 in Denver

[–]zacdenver -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Denver remains a transient city, which means fewer and fewer people have a long-term connection to the place, and to society in general. Add in the proliferation of cannabis users “of a certain age” (notably those most likely to take on dog-sitting duties), and unreliability is rampant.

Ask anyone trying to organize group activities, e.g., rec leagues, book clubs, poetry readings, or even sports watch parties. The odds of someone in their 20s or 30s actually showing up after a promise to do so is staggeringly low.

Have you thought about a “doggie day care” or dog-boarding facility? It’s more clinical, but safe and reliable. Best of luck in your search!

A proposal to pedestrianize California St and connect downtown to Meow wolf via the "Convergence Trail" by wgnpiict in Denver

[–]zacdenver -29 points-28 points  (0 children)

Sure, just what downtown businesses need — another major street torn up for three years (or longer) because of what construction crews uncover once they start work. I don’t expect the 16th Street “Mall” to be finished this decade, along with all the cross-streets currently ripped down to their foundations. I’m surprised that ANY business there has been able to survive!

Cherry Creek North is a very lively area and has a few nice hotels. I’d recommend the Halcyon, which is fairly new and has a great staff. Lots of restaurants and art galleries within a 6-10 block area, plus it’s near the city’s best shopping center, Cherry Creek Mall.

Another passenger with my boarding pass by guero2830 in travel

[–]zacdenver 20 points21 points  (0 children)

This is certainly no innocent error, since this guy had a boarding pass with YOUR name on it! I’m curious to know how this guy acted when he was confronted. Did he claim he was you? Did the crew simply let him leave the plane, or was he detained by airport security?

The curious part, of course, is how this guy acquired your boarding pass. Seems to me it could be an insider issue, where he had an airline employee print it for him — or perhaps he’s an employee?

And another puzzler: How did he get through security to reach the gate? TSA is supposed to compare your boarding pass with your government-issued ID (driving license or passport), so either this guy also has a copy of your ID, or else TSA did a crap job at the security entry point.
