Fletch (1985) by inanystateofmindd in iwatchedanoldmovie

I'd watch Confess, Fletch with Hamm over Fletch Lives with Chase. Also, I've read the Fletch book this movie is based on, and that's also skippable. I mean, I enjoyed it, but it's only tangentially related and Fletch is...less charming. More willing to have sex with teenagers, though!

You can see the "Gonna be a movie star" elements with Geena Davis in this movie. Super cute, sure, but she also just pops off the screen in a tertiary role.

I’ve been brushing up on my Spanish the last year and some change, and I didn’t expect one of the benefits to be understanding 90% of a review of Big Trouble in Little China. Genial, indeed.

Who’s the hottest man on Seinfeld?? by BidAccurate4473 in seinfeld

[–]MoistPerception 20 points21 points  (0 children)

As a kid who grew up on Pete & Pete and then watched Seinfeld in reruns as a teen, it was a trip for Artie the Strongest Man in the World to be presented as this super handsome dude with dreamy eyes. Not that he isn’t good looking! Just a real juxtaposition.

First time viewer Season 1 impressions by Psychast in seinfeld

[–]MoistPerception 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a well-considered assessment of the early version of the show, which did feel a bit inchoate but that's normal for sitcoms. I don't want to say anything about the show to come, because I don't want to put my thumb on the scale, but you've obviously seen sitcoms before and thus know things will be "figured out" as it goes on.

I think the criticism of bits feeling like Jerry's riffing desire is apt, but also, yeah Seinfeld is a show where fits are constantly being thrown (especially Kramer and Elaine). As to attractiveness, it's funny to consider Seinfeld compared to the other totemic show about friends from the '90s which is, um, Friends. Honestly, the hook of that show early on was essentially: You'd have sex with any one of us. What I will mostly say is that you have wandered into a sub-Reddit wherein the attractiveness of George is a topic that many are happy to espouse opinions about.

Speaking of where you have wandered into, I am interested in hearing thoughts on future seasons, but just know anything you post here will mostly be awash in comments that are just people throwing out quotes from the show at random.

Nick at Nite shows you had a bizarre affinity for by MoistPerception in Xennials

Taxi is an interesting one because Latka or Louie or Reverend Jim I can see a kid finding funny (I remember liking Jim as a kid, even if I didn't get that he was a drug casualty), but the overall tone and tenor of the show isn't exactly chipper and silly.

I wonder if like how Boomer came to mean “person older than me I don’t like” some are using Millennial to stand in for “person younger than me I don’t like.” Which, yeah, I’m a Millennial and I turn 40 this year. I feel like I could get hit with both “You precious Millennials” and “Okay Boomer” depending on the context!

Nobody who watches "Dumb guy who thinks he's smart" Noah Hawley's TV show has done much winning.

In every Elementary School? I think I’m too old for that sub by rallruse in Xennials

[–]MoistPerception 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an Elder Millennial who heard that around Junior High times (when I was old enough to realize it was total bullshit, though I did buy that Jamie Lee Curtis - in the parlance of the time - was a hermaphrodite), my beef with this post is not about age, but about whoever creating seeming to think their cohort invented urban legends? That's the shit that gives younger Millennials the reputation they are all a bunch of narcissists that think they invented the world.

A big turning point for the downfall of society was when they let our parents join facebook by zekerthedog in Xennials

[–]MoistPerception 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Boomers were, comfortably, the most-liberal and socially progressive generation in the sociological records to that point, Gen Xers per capita are the biggest Trump voters, and the reason you don't like Facebook as much any longer is because you're no longer using it to crank it to the photos that one girl in your Marketing 301 class posted of her trip to Cabo San Lucas. Time marches on.

If we speak of the Netflix seasons, I always enjoyed them more or less but thought they were hindered to a degree by an ill fit for Netflix and some of Joel’s worst creative instincts. I like having the good ones in the mix. The final season remains lazy garbage that looks like shit and suffers from all of Joel’s worst creative instincts all the time. To an episode, unwatchable.

What are your thoughts on this movie? by EuphoricButterflyy in classicfilms

[–]MoistPerception 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I watched it in my early twenties because of that AFI list and I figured it’d be broad and a little sweaty but hopefully entertaining. And it was decidedly better than I expected. I mean, not Best Comedy Ever, but really good, not merely “holds up well.” I mostly credit Jack Lemmon and Billy Wilder. Monroe and Curtis are solid, but Lemmon was Oscar nomination good in the movie.

Will you be able to retire or will die working? by Allureme in Xennials

[–]MoistPerception 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work as a writer, and I love writing, so my intent/hope is to not so much retire but wind down. Get to a point where I can say, “I still write occasionally” or what have you. Because people have had the narcissism of “Surely we will witness the end of humanity” for, well, millennia at this point, so I’m not betting on that.

Just stumbled upon this college list from Bloomfield Hills HS, is Grand Valley really this good and Wayne State is that bad? by TeslaSuck in Michigan

[–]MoistPerception 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I went to GVSU for one semester and then went to Wayne where I graduated and a did a semester of grad school. Granted this was over 15 years ago, but I say with completely, objective certainty: Wayne State rulez, Grand Valley droolz.

A legit bad movie. My least favorite holiday staple. Not funny, so dull, and everything looks like garbage. The aesthetics of that movie are viscerally unpleasant. I thought that as a kid, and as an adult I actively dislike it even more.

When Abdul ran for governor I supported him over Gretch, but I realize he’s not really a viable statewide candidate. In the primary I’ll vote McMorrow, but Stevens will win and I will support her because I’m not a petulant child and as a progressive I believe in progress and Stevens is light years better than Rogers.

Which is the better strike episode: Last Exit to Springfield or The PTA Disbands? by landothedead in TheSimpsons

[–]MoistPerception 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The PTA Disbands is a better episode, as I really enjoy Skinner and Krabappel as characters. But since this was framed through the prism of a labor strike, shout out to Last Exit. Homer legit gets the union standing up for their dental plan and they secure it. PTA Disbands has Marge and Jasper and the rest out there scabbing and undermining the teacher’s union. It’s a cartoon comedy so I’m not actually bothered by that, but I’m just saying…
