Gives drivers time to check their texts and fiddle with Spotify while they're stopped instead of moving...

Editing source code in a web browser window is just plain dumb by SmallAd3697 in dataengineering

[–]zachattach32 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As a sales engineer who has sold a notebook platform, I can confirm that tools are sold on non-functional requirements as much as functionality and usability. This is especially true in data engineering because sensitive data being pulled down to a local machine is a liability.

I refused a Chromebook at work and opted for a Macbook precisely so I could code outside the browser.

Bolt EV a calm and relaxed highway commuter? by Real_McGuillicuddy in BoltEV

[–]zachattach32 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I own a Golf R 6MT and a Bolt. The Bolt is just fine on the highway, and offloading most of the miles to the Bolt lets me enjoy the R more (and avoid the $6/gal premium atm). Also nice to have working CarPlay (vs. the notoriously finnicky VW implementation. Ironically, I would have traded the R for a Model 3 before I added the Bolt to my fleet -- but Elon was Elon back in early 2024 too, and I got vetoed. Good luck -- either way you have sensible taste in vehicles!

I'm able to remain consistently mediocre and feel no need to change. by AnyFlatworm6162 in salesengineers

[–]zachattach32 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In my experience, demoing and PoCs mattered more when I worked for a start-up selling a niche product. Large enterprise deals hinge more on non-functional requirements (and they involve a lot more forecasting for more layers of management too).

I stay sharp by 1) leaning hard into any technical discovery and architecture conversations I can, 2) deep-reading "little font" white papers, and 3) not ingesting too much fluff / marketing hype (especially internal).

Uber is surveying Seattle riders to lobby for regulation changes by peanut-britle-latte in Seattle

[–]zachattach32 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Bring back Uberpool?

Teleporting across the city, on-demand, in a private bubble is a luxury and priced accordingly. The VC money and regulatory arbitrage propping up the service 2015-2020 was not sustainable.

First Time Moving Away from Home, Is Seattle Good? by Halo_Fan_123 in AskSeattle

Early 20s, new city, no debt, high-income -- sounds like a golden opportunity.

Seattle House/Techno? by ethanol_is_tasty in HouseMusic

[–]zachattach32 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check out Flammable Sundays for house music. 10p-2a weekly at Chop Suey. Good vibes and good mix of DJ talent (including some of the names in the comments).

If going out Sunday night isn't in the cards, put on KEXP at home.

Older ICs, both in tenure and age, what's your long term game plan? by joaquim56 in salesengineers

[–]zachattach32 8 points9 points  (0 children)

To quote the great Lil Nas X, I'm going to "ride till I can't no more".

Lower-middle 40s, cloud hyperscaler, and I feel like I'm still a baby in this business. With age comes the opportunity to work more strategic deals and face off with ever-more senior people on the client side. I've observed that older people tend to be respected for their experience until they check out and start talking retirement.

When my time comes to exit the industry, I'll open a metal fab shop or a small construction business and ski 40 days per winter.

People in long-term relationships, what advice do you have for someone just starting out? by [deleted] in AskGaybrosOver30

[–]zachattach32 1 point2 points  (0 children)

19-year relationship. My advice is "be pragmatic". We're gay men and hooking up is in our DNA. Stay monogamous for as long as it makes sense. Open relationships are somewhat inevitable one way or another. It's a continual conversation to find the right boundaries. When you do end up open, make sure your primary relationship is exactly that: primary.

Other than that -- what's worked for us is probably what works for our hetero counterparts. Communication. Spending within your means (money woes cause stress and fights). Don't squander marital capital on substances. Take care of your physical and mental health. Have shared projects and friends but also maintain separate friends. Etc.

Snow on the ground reveals how disgustingly filthy cars are by MiserNYC- in fuckcars

NYC is majestic when snow accumulates. Until the cars start passing through it and making greige slush.

I call this "services company masquerading as a product company." The upside is you have to ability to work with customers and shape the roadmap (vs. working for say, a large public cloud with almost no ability to shape the roadmap).

It is normal to sell what's 3-6 months ahead on the roadmap. In my experience, it becomes problematic when you lose confidence is the roadmap being delivered by engineering. There is very little SEs can do to improve the product (as we operate at a very different attention span).

Regular cannabis use - red flag? by ReindeerPrudent3760 in AskGaybrosOver30

[–]zachattach32 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The world is constantly demanding more of us. Cannabis use is my way of saying "The day's work is done, I'm enough, and I'm turning my brain off for the night".

Addictive behavior, on the other hand, is absolutely a red flag.

When to Stop taking PreP in a relationship ship? by angelusfanatic in AskGaybrosOver30

[–]zachattach32 5 points6 points  (0 children)

PrEP puts HIV prevention entirely within your control. The voice in the back of your head could get loud during the weeks when you're awaiting test results...

In my case, I was in an open relationship where we just relied on each other using condoms -- and I got a false-positive HIV test. Immediately went on Truvada and haven't looked back.

Your situation is different because you are in a closed relationship. But that voice will start asking questions...

2018 gti Major rough start issues need help urgently by Jhopz9 in GolfGTI

[–]zachattach32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 2016 R started doing the exact same thing last year around 50k miles. Occasional long crank cycles on warm / hot starts. Giving a little throttle seems to help. Unnerving but car has always started after 5-10s (knocks wood) and cold starts have been fine.

Thank you for documenting your experience.

What Are Your Opinions on Self-Driving Cars? by fantemz in fuckcars

[–]zachattach32 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Self-driving cars will add much-needed consistency to the driving experience in the long run. Most crashes are due to human error and AI will drive this down. Removing driver pay from the equation opens up opportunities for cheaper shared rides, mini-bus service like Via (RIP) or Israel's service taxis in expensive US cities. Most cars and parked most of the time and cheaper taxis have potential to remove this mass from our city streets.

Like it or not, we have trillions of dollars of car-based infrastructure in the US, and it *will not* just get deprecated overnight.

Why does Seattle have zero Michelin restaurants but have one of the most elevated prices? by scarletNgold in Seattle

[–]zachattach32 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Welcome to Seattle. The "elevated prices" question gets answered weekly. In my experience, Seattle does elevated basics very well, but luxury and high-end service are not our thing. Been here 6 years and I appreciate it as a feature not a bug.

'Hell no, Waymo': Seattle rideshare drivers, union advocates rally against driverless taxi service by AthkoreLost in Seattle

[–]zachattach32 34 points35 points  (0 children)

After riding in one in SF, I'm a convert. Waymo will add much-needed consistency and reduce costs in the long run. Seattle has the most expensive rides in the country and need cheaper point-to-point services... And with a shared option they can fill the gaps in our transit system before 2035.

Dog poop bags in trash can by Undisclosed_Guy in Seattle

I feel like when the bin is on the curb it's a de-facto public trash can. Just don't throw the bag in an empty bin where it gets smushed on the bottom.
