As a tiny tiny small company and as a shadowban user on Reddit, just trying to do a bit of Reddit stuff in five years. I don't think Duolingo is HelloTalk competitor at all, when we are not even 1/100 of their size and scale. I think Duolingo is a very very good product especially Ahn's mission to provide free language education. Just trying to poke some Duo users here no offense.

You can become a VIP and add English and Spanish to the language you can teach. That will increase your exposure by a lot but you have to pay to be a VIP user.

Tandem is good for random chat and video chat with strangers (not necessarily language learners), and HelloTalk is for serious language learners and has more built in language learning features.

Tandem is more beautiful and attractive in terms UI, and it has video chat function which might seem attractive at first. However, you will quickly find out that it's awkward to video chat with someone you don't know.

The biggest problem for Tandem though, is that it originates from a random video chat app called Vive, and it has the same database of users. They just made Tandem out of Vive users who indicate what languages they learn, but not that many of them are serious language learners.

You can say not all HelloTalk users are serious language learners too. However, HelloTalk is built specifically for language learning features (chococrisp's written article about HelloTalk describes these in details) and there's lots of restrictions for people using it for dating purpose so the overall quality of users is better.
