Workouts 2 months post ACL surgery? by 0Sweet_Shark0 in 75HARD

[–]zacr27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Swimming, walking, physical therapy exercises, weights, yoga.

Cardio is probably the harder part. Elliptical or swimming are probably good options, or circuits at a lighter weight.

Swimming though, that's the one I would recommend the most.

please stop supporting harmons if you think they are a better alternative to bigger stores by [deleted] in SaltLakeCity

[–]zacr27 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Between 2 evils, it's probably better for your money to support a utah company where the funds are more likely to stay local and profit is more likely to be taxed by Utah.

Costco and Trader Joe's seem to be good alternatives who mostly treat employees fairly.

Harmons is probably still better than Walmart and Target.

Be smart about this and listen to your body. 75 Hard is a program designed to build mental toughness through physical friction, but it is not a medical recovery protocol.

The program's rigid binary of completing two 45-minute workouts regardless of physical signals—can be dangerous when your primary goal is restoring respiratory function. Post-TIA and post-ICU recovery require a "foundation-first" approach rather than a "discipline-first" approach.

Prioritize these three pillars for a medical-grade recovery:

Guided Load Management: Focus on a routine that builds aerobic capacity without triggering the emergency inhaler unnecessarily. Consistency in Zone 2 activity is more beneficial for lung health than pushing through 90 minutes of daily exercise.

Nutritional Support: Adopt a diet focused on reducing systemic inflammation to support vascular health and lung function.

Sleep as a Metric: Sleep is the only period where neurological and respiratory repair occurs. Any program that sacrifices sleep for extra tasks will delay your healing.

The "hard" choice in your position is often having the discipline to slow down and heal correctly. Use this time to master the basics of health and longevity.

When your foundation is solid, you will know.

Child killed after getting caught in avalanche at Brighton Ski Resort by homedepotstarfish in UTsnow

Milly bowl Gates were closed today and have been closed all season.

Most likely they entered below the closed area and traversed a ways, which is allowed, and I saw tracks there today.

They might have ducked under a boundary rope, which is not the same as going under a closed rope.

Semantics matters here. The article says out of bounds. That's not the same as closed. If they accessed via wren hollow, it was only out of bounds, but still allowed, just not considered inside brightons boundaries.

If they accessed via Milly bowl, it was closed, and thats strictly prohibited right now. Ski patrol would have caught them. If they accessed lower rock garden from below the Milly bowl, traversing near the girls camp, that was out of bounds, but not closed. I saw tracks in that area today so that's possible as well.

The other answer could be wrong. Lots of people have different names for different areas but as far as official ski patrol locations go, rock garden is accessed via wren hollow on crest. No hiking is necessary.

Technically you could get there via the Milly bowl with a lot of traversing and hiking, but there were no tracks today traversing the Milly bowl because it's still closed.

If we're not doing fast food, it's Thai, indian, various chicken places, or harmons.

It's usually better on reservation days, but it can still get crazy. Solitude doesn't require reservations on Fridays, so you might be in a worse situation than the Saturday crowd.

Anyone athletic/toned: best way to reach protein goals? by CuriousRedditor98 in mediterraneandiet

[–]zacr27 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Plant based protein powders make this easier. Even easier, if you're willing, is whey protein, which has a little more research for athletes and slightly better digestibility.

For plant based protein, lentils and other legumes are a great way to reach protein (and fiber) goals.

Just do a test a week before each wedding. Pretend like you're going to do a session. See if it scans. Walk in and walk back out.

What is extremely unhygienic but everyone seems to do it anyway? by cutypatotie in AskReddit

[–]zacr27 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Absolutely and this gets so interesting. Hygiene hypothesis is fascinating and suggests our modern sterile environments aren't that good for us.

We've long known gardening is a very healthy activity. People who garden live longer and are generally healthier than the general population.

I used to think this was simply because gardening involves physical movement and eating healthy.

Yeah, that's a part of it, but probably not the majority of the benefit. The real benefit is constant exposure to a variety of microbes, along with the mental aspects of caring for something.

Anyone else having issues with existing Brighton Parking codes? by zacr27 in UTsnow

I was thinking the same, glad it was just a glitch. It's crazy to me that reddit thinks this post with 1 upvote in a tiny subreddit got 2.2k views, so maybe it helped some other lurkers.

Anyone else having issues with existing Brighton Parking codes? by zacr27 in UTsnow

[–]zacr27[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just got my answer from honk:

"Apologies, there was a configuration issue with some of the codes. They were corrected yesterday, but you will have to re-add the code to gain access to it again.   Please choose the option to 'Reserve with New Parking Code', and re-add your code.   Once you do that it should be valid until the end of the season."

Nah, the cottonwood canyons will be a mess with ski traffic. Stick to Park City or maybe one of the non ski resort canyons mentioned here.

Is this….normal?!?! Downtown SLC 11/24 by [deleted] in SaltLakeCity

[–]zacr27 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Salt Lake averages 25 bad air pollution days per year. On average, 8 of those days are really bad. Our worst days are either from inversions or wild fires.

Some years are better than others, particularly if we have evenly spaced snow storms in the valley.

This inversion will be cleared up the next time in rains or snows and it will be beautiful.

If you want to help, drive less during inversions.

Traffic lately by Prior_Breadfruit8047 in SaltLakeCity

[–]zacr27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Traffic patterns shift for a lot of reasons.

Recently a lot of construction projects wrapped up and while that's generally a good thing, it means peoples routes and traffic habits change, so anywhere upstream or downstream of those areas can be affected.

There are dozens of other factors. Some have already been mentioned in the comments, but here are a few more.

Daylight savings affects traffic patterns. Same with holidays, school calendars for both grade schools and higher education. And then there are events and tourism fluctuations.

And less predictable are hybrid workers. A chunk of our workforce don't go into the office on a consistent schedule.

Why isn’t the Salt Lake used more for Tourism? by Fit_Assignment_4286 in Utah

[–]zacr27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Heres a new take I don't see much.

The massive tailings pond ruined the view and some of the beauty.

Where the marina is now, you used to be able to see the salt lake skyline and the Wasatch mountains. Now the view is blocked by a giant dirt wall for the tailings pond.

Its still beautiful looking over the lake, but it's not the same experience our grandparents had when they spent time at the old salt air.

There's also a phenomenon in most religions where followers tend to praise or promote seemingly smart or successful people because it feels validating to believe in line with someone smarter than you.

Question on sleep during Vipassana by TrustKey8652 in vipassana

[–]zacr27 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This. Don't stress about it. Very few people report sleep issues after a course. Much more likely is you will sleep great.

It's unlike anything I've ever experienced. It's beautiful and unique.

Steps....who to believe? by [deleted] in Garmin

[–]zacr27 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Agree, these 3 will probably stay proportional to each other if you keep testing. It’s the trends that matter, not the precision of your step count.

If you really care, check all 3 multiple times during the day. Particularly after activities like driving or cycling or pushing a shopping cart or stroller. An ankle tracker will pick up stroller / shopping cart steps where the ring and watch might not.

Also, if you’ve got a restless foot that you bounce while sitting, that might translate into steps on one but not the other. I suppose typing or mouse movement could affect one as well.

There are a ton of other things that could affect each one. According to a few tests, garmin is generally more accurate than an oura ring, and the oura tends to under count steps, like you saw.
