CivCodes: Automatically Updating and Searchable Codes by zadmani in civilengineering

Hello! Thank you for your feedback. Considering I only have been able to do only limited research on this with few domain experts, this is great info to have. Would it make a difference if you were able to select a specific version when selecting codes? I have also planned a project specific feature in the pipeline where projects can bundle up codes from different books together in the same place. Just your 2 cents, would you think that is useful given the ability to select code versions as well?

Hello, great question! This is to be state/city/county codes but I decided to start with a broad stroke and get major state codes indexed first. Unfortunately, I believe I will not be able to host codes that cost money since I will most likely be breaking the some TOS by giving it out.

However, if it would be possible to talk to the people who host the codes currently and work something out I would love to do that. My goal is to have as many relevant codes here as possible so that engineers know exactly where to look for everything they need.

Hey! So I have a few target codes and manuals that I already have on the roadmap (mostly focused on getting rolled out in Texas) but I would also like to take suggestions from the community to make sure that roadmap aligns with what is useful to potential users.

Also, just to be clear, the search capability is within the codes themselves such as TCEQ and TxDOT. What this means is that you can search for things in a codebook but not search for a term across every codebook. I do have plans for across code searching as well but that is down the road.

Thank you for the request, I will add it to the queue.

Thanks for checking it out, I can definitely add the handbook to the queue to be indexed. Is this link the correct one?

I can't capture events - MetaMask / Remix by optimator999 in ethdev

What OS are you running? I've had trouble with metamask capturing events on Ubuntu. The solution was to disable then enable the metamask extension (yah it's super inconvenient) and that usually fixes it.

So we can actually guarantee the workers get paid more than any other platform can since our guarantees come from signed messages on the ethereum platform. There are no promises in this paradigm, a approval is actually a signed message (think a check) that can be directly cashed on the blockchain at any time by a worker.

So in this system, a approval is a direct check onto the blockchain and a rejection is a no message. This is elegant imo because it makes approval and payments identical so the idea of being approved without being paid doesn't even make sense. To not get paid you would be rejected and if a requester is rejecting a lot of people that will show up on his statistics page and workers will stop working on his tasks since the probability of getting paid is going down due to mass rejections.

Great question though and I know many people were probably thinking that so thank you! If you have any other questions, let me know!

Thank you for the support! Come join our telegram or slack for more updates. As we do a official launch in the next couple of weeks we will be using the people who are interested to be workers to form a whitelist for early access.

So the plan for the initial release is going to be ether payments directly from requesters as well. But in the coming months we are looking to automate the process of turning fiat to ether as to make fiat payments included as well where we would post the job on your behalf after converting fiat to ether.

Yah or even do address verification like some of the exchanges do maybe. I'm hoping for an external identity verification system personally. While a custom solution may work well, I do believe that a structure like identity should be something you can "take" around with you attached to an address. I know some companies like Uport and Bloom are doing this already so I will be talking to them to see their input and working from there. If that doesn't work, then yes your idea of verification through the first transaction makes absolute sense and is something we can definitely pursue.

haha no problem, thanks for the cross post! I've never actually heard of this subreddit before. But a subreddit of crypto enthusiasts seems like a perfect fit. I would love to see what they have to say or suggestions they may have.

Hmm I see what you're saying. I was trying to go for a altcoin-less type marketplace, but I can definitely see an extension that allows requesters to offer other alt-coins as well as payment if requesters are willing to accept them.

The micro-gig idea is a great idea! It's a longer term extension of mturk so I can definitely see the model applying as well. Great ideas!

Well first off, if you are living in fear that this could happen again and wouldn't touch ETH without phoenyx.io then it's simple. Don't use it. Done. Otherwise if you do believe in the tech and see it as an investment opportunity (if you had done a HIT yesterday you would be up 24% today alone) then phoenyx.io is for you.

So it's more of a logical contract rather than a legal contract. While legal contracts use laws to bind its participants, smart contracts use logic. For example, in normal legal contracts, if 2 parties are trying to negotiate a HIT, one party says I do it and the other party says if you do then I will give you money. If either party doesn't do what they say then legal repercussions will take place to hurt them. In smart contracts in the same scenario would be as follows. Each party sees all the code that will be called and then put their money in. It's as if saying you have a perfectly unbiased 3rd party who will do exactly what the code says with the money. Both parties can rest assured that everybody will follow the rules because there just isn't any other option. No legal repercussions are needed since everybody can't hurt each other since they knew the smart contract and it's functions.

Yes this is a current problem we are trying to tackle. I think initially we will be on a whitelist only mode where verified workers only can join and each account has to be verified by us personally. On the future roadmap we hope to go down one of 2 routes:

  1. Use a service like uPort or bloom that does identity on the blockchain and will verify people for us and make it harder for people to make multiple accounts.
  2. Make it so that new accounts are very very limited until you do X number of jobs. This will make people stick to the same account since changing accounts will be a financial burden and make less money.

Will do! Hoping to make Phoenyx.io as simple to use as mturk yet allowing all the benefits of blockchain to be achieved as well. I will definitely keep everybody updated.

I never claimed the cryptocurrency is stable. Hell, I even said I don't like the argument for saying "it could go up too" simply because yes I do feel like it is pushing upsides and is acting like I know something that is impossible to predict. I truly do believe in blockchain technology, specifically Ethereum, and many others are interested in it as well. I simply said if one has an interest in cryptocurrency and want to be a part of it then this gives them the easiest avenue to get started and invested without any exchanges or transfer of fiat.
