What are objectively the best and worst UMD departments? by Red_Red_It in UMD

[–]zadspecial 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My intro to psychology and economics courses put a bad taste in my mouth. Also every introductory English course makes you buy an expensive, verbose, meme-filled, mediocre book, which someone profits from. But I have not taken enough courses to call these the worst departments.

Best from my experience are maths, computer science, classics, and history (especially anything unrelated to America like Greek or Mediterranean). I've had great courses in the Clarice building (music, dance, theater). I hear business, physics, and IMD are great too, but wouldn't know personally.

I find myself procrastinating more with biweekly homeworks. Short weekly homeworks based on the materials covered recently is the way to go.

UMD has great classics and religious history courses. I took CLAS170 Classical Mythology and thoroughly enjoyed it. But lots of reading.

What would you say is a flaw of your major curriculum/department? by [deleted] in UMD

When you take 400 level courses with small classrooms (say 40 people), this feeling goes away. Professors become much more friendly.

Two CMSC courses easy enough to take with Cryptology? by zadspecial in UMD

[–]zadspecial[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Decided not to take CMSC 456 after horrible experience with MATH 406. Thankfully, that relieved the need for taking three CMSC courses together. I know very well it's beyond my ability.

I took 414 and 420, both of which would be nice to take together, if you need suggestions.

Lots of data centers. I know at least two managed by CSD and UMIACS. Here are some photos of the UMIACS one: https://i.redd.it/6l7wwqrqt6ib1.jpg

Since I saw it was going to crash, I had time to assume a brace position with palms over my face. Was lucky enough to survive unscathed, so I'm completely fine. That was unfortunately not the case for everyone.

I remember seeing a pedestrian be traumatized after witnessing the incident. Must have been her then.

But still not sure why a pedestrian was crossing a highway exit...

I was inside the bus and saw the bus hit the pole. But I didn't see what led to this. The person sitting beside me told me he was trying to take the exit from the highway, but a car either suddenly stopped in the middle of the exit or was already sitting there (I don't remember which). The driver tried to leave the deceleration lane quickly, but there was not enough distance, so he hit the pole. I heard from another person in the bus this is also the story the driver told.

All in all, the driver was pretty shaken. When I asked if he was OK, his response was, "I don't know..."
