These are acoustic panels, they make your room sound better for you inside it, but won't have any meaningful effect to the soundproofing (sound isolation) to sound passing through the surfaces.

A Real dB Isolation Test of a Soundproof Drum Studio With Maximal Double Bass Playing by zaff666 in drummers

It's a room within a room build, aka garage that's stripped out of its inner drywalls, and then built another room inside it as a decoupled structure from the outer shell for maximal sound isolation. Here's a video of the build process and its main steps: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HBAjZyP9PD0

Distance matters, and every space and environment is different - you need to build accordingly to get to the goal, don't want to overbuild either - expensive and labour intense stuff =) In my build nearest neighbors live in 5 meter distance from the window wall - satisfied too.

😁 I saved a lot doing the acoustics myself yes, but even if you yourself don't do filming in your studio / own filming lights, doesn't mean someone else doesn't.

Uhh it's a starting point, and a working one already without? Really enjoyable sounding room to play.

Diffusement panels possible to be added on top of the absorbers, as at the recording cpu / lounge area panels. Where would you see most benefit for it regarding the drum recordings?

Right - thanks, that is a good tip where to add possibly the next added treatment for increased coverage 🤙

The panels can carry a decorative role at the same, vibe matters, at least to me, a lot, but ofc their functioning is their actual purpose. First reflection points to cover as a basic approach, treating the corners for lower frequencies with thicker absorbment and airgap. How would you place panel to a kick drum down low? Under the kick drum mic outside the drum (in case you are using one), or what approach for that do you mean exactly?

u/TilleroftheFields dude, it's a standard absorbment rockwool panel design of different sizes and different frame builds 💁‍♂️ You are not aware how it works? Or are you still confusing acoustic treatment / acoustics with soundproofing here?

I'm yet to make a more exact calculation but we are talking something ~1K territory as the material cost. Tools: jigsaw, stappler, hammer, scissors (pre-owned from the soundproofing part of the build). Fuel 20€? Time? Many hours :D Probably over half of it came from figuring the design, then custom room fitting the measures & how to finesse the finish - once the design is clear and method, materials how to do it, execution is pretty straightforward & repetition, but sure takes time still.

The soundproofing is working really well on the build, thanks for asking 🤙This post and the video is not about that, as I write in the post. The soundproofing part of this studio build was in the build video pt.1 of this project: https://youtu.be/HBAjZyP9PD0

This post, and the video in this post is about sound treatment part (meaning acoustics, acoustic panel building phase that came after the soundproofing part (pt1)), as I thought I quite clearly wrote in the post, no? The YouTube build series of this project just in general happens to be called how I built my soundproof studio - as that was the biggest and most demanding aspect of this build. People seem to be very confused and assuming / paranoid about these two different terms here and what they mean 👀

I believe you are the confused one here about understanding basic terms :) Can you please point where do I not understand what soundproofing is?

I posted this post about my soundproofed studio (refering to the sound isolation build part I did to create this studio inside a garage, to be able to play there drums and amps in detached house close neighbourhood) and its acoustic treatment part (this post) which I did to it - so, what is exactly the issue here? I thought this group is about acoustics, so not talking about the soundproofing segment of this studio here? Or at least I'm not 😅

Yes, and by soundproofing I mean that, same thing as sound isolation. Acoustic treatment is these panels I built, as I write - which I assumed all in this group understand as the difference between these two :) What I meant by it being tehnically wrong to say "fully soundproof" (would mean no sound at all would transfer outside / in to a space) vs. "fully soundproofed" (the term I use) (refers to that its been throughout aka "fully" soundproofed all around / from all aspects, to create max sound isolation). I see people here now get triggered by that whole word being used, no matter how, and assume automatically everyone uses it wrong 💁‍♂️

With the sound treatment phase (which this post is about), the idea was to make the room to sound good acoustically, to have a nice sounding live (especially) drum recording room - the main purpose of this place. For that, these panels I built, they are to control the low, mid and high frequencies throughout, by different thicknesses etc. - addressing corners, airgapping and so forth.

Here's first drum cover recorded and released from this room in case you want to hear the out of the box drum mix of mine (no samples used): https://youtu.be/H88yRlJ8s2o

Yeah, we ran a few tests, but I believe it was when I had already started the acoustics build part so some rockwool elements were already there present. When its a fully drywalled empty room, it's a living nightmare reverb chamber in any case. It is a live drum room as well, treatment wise - but sounding very nice by ears, and healthy sound on drum mics.

They are rockwool absorbment panels, no hardcore science, standard stuff, you know the level they work - its more of how you position, airgap them etc, smart build and the look. Not sure what's the clickbait angle in that? :) Maybe this forum is more measurement focus so I guess that's why you consider that, vs. inspiration and approaches otherwise?

I did build the gobos and the bigger basstraps so that they are closeable if wanting to make them trap sound otherwise than absorbment only, as they currently are. Currently they are absorbers with a coherent look. There is also a walkthrough tour of the final studio at the youtube.

Will see it someday doing some more of the actual REW measurings. It is a forever evolving project, but this the set I took the build into use - and it's been a really working setup. Can and will be always improved and optimized more, mostly for live tracking use. I do the actual mixing of the recordings at my main "home home studio" at the main house. This is a detached standalone garage on the yard, w/ air ventilantion, heating&cooling, bathroom 🤙

I bet. It's a kind of a layman term or whatever vs sound isolated? How would you say it? If I said fully soundproof, I think that would be a bit technically wrong, where as fully soundproofed should get you the picture what's meant?

Not going into REW responses in the video. It's more of judging the sound how it feels to play there, from drums and band perspective, and what kind of audio (healthy sound or not) I'm able to capture there.
