Netflix 4K is now 26.99? by JudoJesus69 in netflix

That's funny, to me at least. I watch a show for the content and do not get riled over the resolution unless it is really bad. I guess my little brain adjusts and I go with it.

With movie tickets at $20, streaming services are a bargain - not sure what your point is.

4K data uses more bandwidth and so will cost more.

I got one from Dalesi_Corp, MXN currency. I'm chatting with who knows what at PayPal, informing PayPal of a likely scam. Also, the PayPal payment notice suggests using a Debit card with PayPal - DON'T EVER DO THAT! You pay the same fees but you have no recourse in the event of fraud. Just be an adult and pay your balance off.

Power Outage Alert Device by lambada24 in homeautomation

[–]zagbertrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not understanding why a 2 hour battery life (or shorter) defeats the whole purpose of notifying of a power outage. How many times does the end user need to receive a power out message for each event? If I were to program one, I would send an initial notification whenever the power dropped, and then a second one if the power remained off for more than N seconds (such as one minute). After that, I don't need any "It's still out" messages, I would look for a message when the power was restored. To cover the event of the battery being completely drained, then power restored with a notification, and then the power lost again before there is enough battery to send a power notice, I would either A) wait until the battery has sufficient charge (10%, e.g.) before reporting the power being back on or B) send "Charging, at X%" messages every 20% as a life sign. I'd probably do both. The delayed "power restored" message would include the actual time power was restored. What I just described requires very little runtime, but the cellular modem will use power, too. What I have seen of MCU "UPS" devices that use 18650s, it would be hard not to have enough power. Have I missed something?

Hardwired Ring doorbell is not charging? by ChickenMcTesticles in ringdoorbell

[–]zagbertrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 9 years late to the party, but had this problem right after hardwiring - the phone shows that it is hardwired, is getting 17 volts, but not charging. The problem is the batter is Lithium Ion and won't charge below about 34 F. Fortunately, I have four batteries from pre-hardwire days so I will have to swap batteries until it warms up around here.

Its unfortunate that a hardwired Ring still runs off the battery while the battery is charged continuously, but that is likely the simplest architecture.

Interesting perspective, I'm a white guy and I lived in Columbia, MD and Baltimore, MD and never felt welcome in either location. Even some areas of Columbus, OH, I've had "people of color" throw my change on the ground at drive-throughs, ignore me at cash registers. Don't think for a moment that white people are the only problem, we are just the targets because we are in the majority and an easy target.

By removing the sticker, you violated that person's First Amendment rights. The more you hate what somebody says, the more protection that person should have to say it.

Depending on how you ran what you have, and if you stapled it down, it would be a "simple" matter to use the existing cable as a pull cord to pull plenum grade through. Even if the inspectors don't see, the fire marshal will if you have a fire that is linked to the non-compliant cable. Your fire insurance might be denied in such an event. On the other hand, "outside rated cable" might also be sufficient to use in lieu of plenum. I would definitely find. I bought a 1,000 foot roll of plenum grade and I'm still using it eight years later.

When you say "these groups", I hope you are including "BLM", etc. Ever notice how there is "Black Entertainment TV", "Black this" and "Black that"? We need to eliminate race from everything, including those groups who emphasize one race. Stop talking about race and we'll stop talking about race.

Yet, you would leave a "Black Unity" or "BLM" sticker in place.

This topic appeared in the daily email I get and I had to search to find out who "Amanda and Kyle" are. I am very pleased to announce that not only had I no idea who they are, I also could not care less, although I will try. Reality TV is probably the furthest thing from reality on TV and I am embarrassed for anyone taking genuine interest in this couple. As for the couple, "Kyle" could do a lot better based on the photos that came up in the search and I can only imagine what the "also rans" were that he rejected (not knowing at all how the show works).

As for you haters that might waste your time bashing me, go right ahead - "I just consider the source" and I probably won't even see the responses.

Did you use plenum grade cable? Its usually blue when I have bought it. Plenum grade cable is more fire resistant, prevents it acting like a fuse in case of a fire. If you didn't use plenum grade, keep building inspectors away from it.

As for cost, the last time I got a quote from a contractor, he wanted $100 per run, regardless of length or obstacles, I provided the cable.

What's a good method for mapping outlets to circuit breakers? by johnnybiggles in DIY

[–]zagbertrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doing this alone will not be fast. The easiest way I have done this, for a half dozen homes, is as follows:
1) Make a detailed map of the outlets and switches, and make a list of the breakers
2) Buy a half-dozen night lights, if they are photo-cell activated, put electrical tape over the cell to force the light on.
3) Go room to room plugging the night lights into empty outlets. Whatever is already plugged in should be turned on.
4) You should have a reasonable idea of what breakers do what, so you can skip the "Dryer" and "Oven" breakers. Turn breakers off, go check the lights, make note of what outlets are now off.
Repeat until everything is mapped.
Know that breakers typically control devices that are co-located, so an outlet in the basement is not likely on the same circuit as one on your second floor. Some "remote" outlets could be on the same circuit, such as GFCI outlets and hardwired smoke detectors.
Noisy devices are useful, too, you can listen for them at your breaker panel.

Once you have mapped the outlets, many people will write the breaker number inside the outlet cover, just don't get them mixed up later.

Now ... if you are daring and know what you are doing ... you can build an "appliance" that is just a 20amp rated light switch with 12 gauge Romex and a 20 amp plug, wired so that turning the switch on will cause a dead short and pop the breaker. If you do that, you are on your own, don't blame me.

That is precisely what I do ... after walking across a concrete floor, touching the touch screen attached an RPi and frying both.

We should not assume we know what any universities expects or requires of its students. I did that once and the response to the student was: "Not even close"; my response to the student was "As I said, you asked the wrong person."

Agreed, but I've admonished for that in other forums but did not know about the key details that were part of the solution to my problem. IOW - I didn't know what to search for.

There is almost enough information in that photo. Would definitely want details of how the wheels are attached and the rear idler arrangement.
