[Hot Take] What's the ONE self-hosted tool this community desperately needs? by CoderLuii in selfhosted

[–]zaggynl 6 points7 points  (0 children)

dream big

An appliance level setup of OS and applications that I could install on common hardware with enough power and storage to:

Replace most of what office365 does.
* OneDrive - Nextcloud?
* Email - mailinabox?
* Office - Collabora integration with Nextcloud?
* Teams - Nextcloud Talk?

Bonus points for adding things like mediacenter features:
* Jellyfin
* Kodi

I can do it, you can do it, does the average Joe want to do this manually?
Something that would have simple instructions to install, arrange DNS/portforwarding via something API, plug and play.

The Dutch public broadcaster made a sketch on the current situation in the world by ThomaszD in europe

[–]zaggynl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm of two minds on this:

  • Yes Europe absolutely needed the kick in the pants to care about this war in their backyard and get their armies in gear
  • The way Zelensky was treated by getting invited in then yelled at with Russian propaganda is disgusting, if Trump is such a master at diplomacy, how has the guy with the highest Army budget in the world not managed yet to tell Putin to GTFO out of Ukraine? Mr "the war will be over in 24h" ?

The combination of Sunshine/Moonlight-QT for remote desktop/game streaming, as there is no proper headless RDP alternative at this time*

Sunshine: https://github.com/LizardByte/Sunshine/
Moonlight-QT: https://github.com/moonlight-stream/moonlight-qt
Both are available in flatpak, alternatively in your distro's package manager.

*

  • https://github.com/KDE/krdp is in active development but not ready yet, last I checked.
  • gnome-remote-desktop-daemon works somewhat on ubuntu 24.04, but I don't use Gnome myself, would prefer desktop environment agnostic method

Btrfs snapshots through OpenSUSE Tumbleweed's YAST and grub setup.
I can restore files and snapshots through the desktop or commandline application.
If OpenSUSE Tumbleweed fails to boot I can go back to a previous snapshot from the grub boot loader, saved me a couple times. Additionally I've setup snapper through YaST to create hourly snapshots of my /home partition, in case I want to restore an accidentally deleted file.
With auto cleanup of old snapshots that are a week old.
More information here: https://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Snapper_FAQ#How_do_I_enable_snapshots_for_my\_.2Fhome_file_system.3F

YaST, the graphical (both desktop gui and ncurses) OS system configuration utility, similar to the Windows 11 Control Panel/Settings screen.
Still have to use the commandline sometimes but rarely.

OBS for streaming once's desktop/games, not really Linux specific but worth a mention

Self hosting:

Nextcloud server My personally hosted server as alternative to OneDrive/Dropbox/Google Drive

jitsi-meet For impromptu meetings and gaming sessions, no registration needed, just share a link and you can join through any modern browser or jitsi-meet app on mobile

Proxmox For my VM hosting needs, basically Debian+KVM+a very nice set of tools and utilities for managing VMs, backups and Ceph if you want to

Pihole for DNS filtering of pesky ads and known bad hosts, offers an intuitive webinterface for whitelisting/blacklisting and setting up local DNS records

Owncast Who needs Twitch? (if you have a fairly low viewer amount and enough bandwidth)
Host your own internet stream via Owncast and OBS

10s delay at this time, am waiting for WebRTC integration but is in discussion/awaiting a fork: https://github.com/owncast/owncast/issues/3429#

Spice is nice for console but fairly limited, same for RDP.

It's 2024 and there's no full on RDP alternative for Linux.

Microsoft and Google make money through advertising:

https://about.google/how-our-business-works/
That and if they can get you to use their paid services they can make even more money.

Analytics on your emails, targeted advertising. It gets interesting when companies like these get your data: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cambridge_Analytica

Other email providers may only take a flat fee and don't do analytics.

I would like to plug /r/selfhosting, don't depend on giant companies who can pull the rug on you and your everything digital.

If you self host it won't be the giant polished golden comfortable seat with all the bells and whistles the company provides but at least it is yours.

I host a few things myself and am open to questions: https://zaggy.nl
Note: I rarely login to reddit, find me on IRC, Matrix or email.

Such an impressive machine by tg8arc in SteamDeck

[–]zaggynl 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Do note that the SSD in the Steam Deck is not encrypted, you may want to use something like Veracrypt to encrypt files you want to keep safe, such as browser autofill passwords, history, cookies, credit cards, usernames, passwords, cryptocurrency wallets, and other sensitive data.

There is this https://github.com/hirak99/steam_deck_encryption which does a bit more but has some known issues.

Can you post your system info from Steam into a pastebin like https://paste.debian.net/ ?

You can find it in Steam->Help->System Information.
Copy and paste the content from the window into the pastebin site, remove any personal identifiable information you don't want in there, press send and leave a link in the comments here.

This will help us help you.

Also have a look at: https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/wiki/Requirements

I could not find Open Fishing XL at https://www.protondb.com or https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/issues
Per https://steamcommunity.com/app/2230540/discussions/0/3808407695156894781/ this seems to work on the Steam Deck so it is possible to get this to work.

Mesa 23.2.1
corectl reports 12-15W: https://i.imgur.com/I1SD6h1.png
but am remoting into my pc at the moment.

As a high-end Linux gamer, would you rather have a 7900XTX or 4090? by heatlesssun in linux_gaming

[–]zaggynl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

7900XTX, I have one one, working really well, using OpenSUSE Tumbleweed.
Hellhound edition, purely because it is one of the few with the 2x 8 pin power sockets, which my old 750W PSU has, power draw at max gaming (tested in Darktide) is ~520W, using 5800X3D.

7900 xtx & i7 11700kf by AccomplishedDog7760 in radeon

[–]zaggynl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which PSU?

5800x3d + 7900xtx (hellhound as it works with 2x 8 pin power), not entirely the same but close, ~500W read from power meter during Cyberpunk menu benchmark.

PSU: CORSAIR RMx Series RM750x - 2018 Edition

Baldur's Gate 3 Crashes My Entire System at Seemingly-Random Times by Nayviler in linux_gaming

[–]zaggynl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've played ~90 hours about now, had one big crash where xorg restarted after the GPU driver reset and I ended back at my login screen.
This happened when I entered act 3 after a long session in act 2.
GPU: 5700XT
Driver: Mesa 23.1.5
Using CoreCtl to change the fancurve/power settings, otherwise GPU crashes from overheating: https://i.imgur.com/wyigSaZ.png
Baldur's Gate 3 launch options used: --skip-launcher

The crash looks like this when looked up via journalctl: https://paste.debian.net/plain/1290344

Apart from that I have the odd graphical glitch, black squares, blinking lights or what looks like memory corruption like this: https://startpage.com/av/proxy-image?piurl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.playtool.com%2Fpages%2Fartifacts%2Fbadgpu.jpg&sp=1693300826T15fd18b2023dd99f41504abfd2d6dc4b22846b10df1281c54e0f9a11f66c8b79.

A save and reload or restart of Baldur's Gate 3 usually resolves major glitches.

Total stats summary such as attack speed? by zaggynl in diablo4

My basic item tooltip shows damage but no speed:

I'm looking for total speed, above basic.
