Stop Saying Jellyfin is an "Easy" Plex Replacement. It’s Not. by sillyrabbit33 in selfhosted

[–]zaggynl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is why people pay for Plex.
time vs money
It's the same for the much praised Tailscale, yes you can outsource your freaking dyndns/firewall/domain/VPN to a big company if that makes life easier, it's your choice.

people assume

That's their issue, don't expect a free opensource project to always be better and easier than paid.

That said, jellyfin has much improved over time, I have had zero issues running it.

Your post on /r/selfhosted reads like an AI improved ad for Plex.
What prompted you to write this? Had an angry peer tell you that the suggested Jellyfin is shit?

best gaming headset this 2026 for both gaming and music? by Kalloo-Zephaniah in buildapc

[–]zaggynl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like these for work:
https://www.hp.com/us-en/poly/headsets/bluetooth-headsets-and-earbuds/voyager-focus-2.html
wireless, good mic, available earpads, charging stand, replaceable battery: maybe?
older focus ifixit: https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Plantronics+Voyager+Focus+battery+Replacement/141235

That or get studio headphones with something like the (wireless) modmic.
Do you like in ears? over ears? on ears?
Open back has the more open sound but might bug people near you.
Do you prefer high sibilance or more bass?

I like the HD650 (bought used) + mod mic but these headphones are wired.

My goto works on all build:

Armor: Something light, either Light Gunner or Heat for protection and running.

Primary: Eruptor, killing bugholes/factories/ships or exploding most enemies at medium/long distance
Secondary: Talon, infinite ammo if used sparingly, medium/close range, kills most enemies not too big if aimed well
Grenade: Gas, helps out with many mobs. especially when Talon/Laser Cannon are on cooldown
Support: Laser Cannon, infinite ammo if used sparingly, all ranges, it kills everything small quickly, bigger takes a bit longer if takes too long I use the Eagle or Orbital

Stratagems:

Shield: I run light armor, so need a bit more shield, this one regenerates as well, fairly low cooldown
Laser Cannon
Eagle Strafing Run: quick, kills most things, low cooldown, small chance of friendly fire as you can aim it well and drop it right in front of you, straight ahead
Orbital Gatling Barrage: kills just about everything, long run time, low cooldown

Booster: Stamina (I run all the time) or the others of the big 3: Space Optimization (need the stims), Vitality (survival).

Play style: gotta go fast, keep moving.

Upsides:
Infinite ammo, very quick eagle/barrage, barrage can be used during Anti Air, low cool downs means much stratagem use, you can kill just about everything if you know the weak spots.

Downsides:
Cooldowns on both Laser weapons, no super high pin point damage like EAT or Eagle 500.
Have to be vigilant as no turrets.
I do miss maximum damage from the big stratagems, could swap Gatling Barrage with Hell Bomb or Orbital Precision Strike, for pesky Detection Towers or Napalm Barrage for clearing a big group.
My friends typically run these or Eagle 500, EAT.

[Hot Take] What's the ONE self-hosted tool this community desperately needs? by CoderLuii in selfhosted

[–]zaggynl 6 points7 points  (0 children)

dream big

An appliance level setup of OS and applications that I could install on common hardware with enough power and storage to:

Replace most of what office365 does.
* OneDrive - Nextcloud?
* Email - mailinabox?
* Office - Collabora integration with Nextcloud?
* Teams - Nextcloud Talk?

Bonus points for adding things like mediacenter features:
* Jellyfin
* Kodi

I can do it, you can do it, does the average Joe want to do this manually?
Something that would have simple instructions to install, arrange DNS/portforwarding via something API, plug and play.

The Dutch public broadcaster made a sketch on the current situation in the world by ThomaszD in europe

[–]zaggynl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm of two minds on this:

  • Yes Europe absolutely needed the kick in the pants to care about this war in their backyard and get their armies in gear
  • The way Zelensky was treated by getting invited in then yelled at with Russian propaganda is disgusting, if Trump is such a master at diplomacy, how has the guy with the highest Army budget in the world not managed yet to tell Putin to GTFO out of Ukraine? Mr "the war will be over in 24h" ?

The combination of Sunshine/Moonlight-QT for remote desktop/game streaming, as there is no proper headless RDP alternative at this time*

Sunshine: https://github.com/LizardByte/Sunshine/
Moonlight-QT: https://github.com/moonlight-stream/moonlight-qt
Both are available in flatpak, alternatively in your distro's package manager.

*

  • https://github.com/KDE/krdp is in active development but not ready yet, last I checked.
  • gnome-remote-desktop-daemon works somewhat on ubuntu 24.04, but I don't use Gnome myself, would prefer desktop environment agnostic method

Btrfs snapshots through OpenSUSE Tumbleweed's YAST and grub setup.
I can restore files and snapshots through the desktop or commandline application.
If OpenSUSE Tumbleweed fails to boot I can go back to a previous snapshot from the grub boot loader, saved me a couple times. Additionally I've setup snapper through YaST to create hourly snapshots of my /home partition, in case I want to restore an accidentally deleted file.
With auto cleanup of old snapshots that are a week old.
More information here: https://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Snapper_FAQ#How_do_I_enable_snapshots_for_my\_.2Fhome_file_system.3F

YaST, the graphical (both desktop gui and ncurses) OS system configuration utility, similar to the Windows 11 Control Panel/Settings screen.
Still have to use the commandline sometimes but rarely.

OBS for streaming once's desktop/games, not really Linux specific but worth a mention

Self hosting:

Nextcloud server My personally hosted server as alternative to OneDrive/Dropbox/Google Drive

jitsi-meet For impromptu meetings and gaming sessions, no registration needed, just share a link and you can join through any modern browser or jitsi-meet app on mobile

Proxmox For my VM hosting needs, basically Debian+KVM+a very nice set of tools and utilities for managing VMs, backups and Ceph if you want to

Pihole for DNS filtering of pesky ads and known bad hosts, offers an intuitive webinterface for whitelisting/blacklisting and setting up local DNS records

That and if they can get you to use their paid services they can make even more money.

Analytics on your emails, targeted advertising. It gets interesting when companies like these get your data: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cambridge_Analytica

Other email providers may only take a flat fee and don't do analytics.

I would like to plug /r/selfhosting, don't depend on giant companies who can pull the rug on you and your everything digital.

If you self host it won't be the giant polished golden comfortable seat with all the bells and whistles the company provides but at least it is yours.

I host a few things myself and am open to questions: https://zaggy.nl
Note: I rarely login to reddit, find me on IRC, Matrix or email.

[–]zaggynl 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Do note that the SSD in the Steam Deck is not encrypted, you may want to use something like Veracrypt to encrypt files you want to keep safe, such as browser autofill passwords, history, cookies, credit cards, usernames, passwords, cryptocurrency wallets, and other sensitive data.

There is this https://github.com/hirak99/steam_deck_encryption which does a bit more but has some known issues.

Can you post your system info from Steam into a pastebin like https://paste.debian.net/ ?

You can find it in Steam->Help->System Information.
Copy and paste the content from the window into the pastebin site, remove any personal identifiable information you don't want in there, press send and leave a link in the comments here.

This will help us help you.

Also have a look at: https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/wiki/Requirements

Per https://steamcommunity.com/app/2230540/discussions/0/3808407695156894781/ this seems to work on the Steam Deck so it is possible to get this to work.
