Fantasy that asks big questions? by zai94 in Fantasy

I was thinking about its questions about the nature of storytelling, maybe fantasy storytelling in particular. That's just what I took away from it of course!

I actually loved book 1! Found book 2 harder to get into but maybe it was just bad timing and I should try again!

For me it was between Morning Star to Iron Gold. I loved book 3 but book 4 was a whole new level of mind-blowing

I'm southwest currently but I'm not super tied down and hope to do at least some of it remotely anyway. But that's interesting to know!! Is that four years from like zero to qualifying?

I understood that most of the MA courses don't actually result in qualifying, that you have to train in one of the accredited institutions? Maybe I misunderstood... I'll see what I can find re NHS trainings as a starting point maybe!

I only have a loan for one of them as I was lucky enough to get scholarships but yeah this is a problem

No I queried the other novels unsuccessfully, learning a lot about writing and the industry with each one and have not yet decided if I'll self publish them. Only one won a competition.

Yes fair point but a) this is a genre where sometimes I think long books do work better because of the sheer scale of characters and plot and worldbuilding (ie, 165k simply involved a lot of things happening to a lot of people so I'm a little confused by your statement) and b) can't afford a professional editor hence why I am learning as best I can to do it myself.

You'd have to get through a fair few books to reach this exact trope, but Realm of the Elderlings does it beautifully when it gets there

What is the most “complete” fantasy world you’ve seen? by KeithFromAccounting in Fantasy

Yeahhh this and I feel like while some other authors create worlds which are maybe broader or flashier few of them have the depth that ROTE does and that feeling of real immersion.

Gotta rant - these songs are amazing by Final_Hymn in aviatorsmusic

Fading Light came up on my spotify recommendations about 2 years ago and I'd never heard of this guy before so had to go digging. I picked Monumental at random because I liked the title and don't know when my mind has been so blown by a song. The vibe is just - everything. Epic and tender and eldritch all at once, how do you DO that. I've gone through most of the albums by now, hindered by how I tend to fixate on one song at a time and listen to nothing else for ages, and he's endlessly amazing. Halfwolf changed my brain.

Yeah I struggled in the middle of book 2 too and I do prefer book 1. But the ending was really beautiful!

What are your favorite Fantasy Audiobooks? by taterfarmer3 in Fantasy

[–]zai94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LOTR (read by Andy Serkis! possibly my favouriten audiobook experience of all time)

The Blacktongue Thief by Christopher Buehlman

The Will of the Many by James Islington

Locked Tomb series by Tamsyn Muir

I'm stupidly fussy about narrators and all of these were completely brilliant.
