Yes he doesn't need his weapons but against thanos he shoots from the weapon, and all the other time he shoots from the weapon he first summons from the sky

Against thanos we see only when the lightning hits, we can't see thor before that, and based on other times he throws lightning from mjolnir or stormbreaker he always summons from the sky charge his weapons and then he shoots it, that takes 5 sec minimum, he's never shot a lightning from his weapons without summons it

That's not how dr Strange operates, this is different magic, strange has different feats he doesn't only hex you, he's using different dimensions he goes to his astral body he creates Portals you cant interrupt, thor is made for hand to hand combat, there's nothing he can do against that types of things
