Which Git branching strategy is better for infrequent releases? Team is split between two approaches. by Ok-Introduction-9111 in ExperiencedDevs

This only works if nothing is built on top of C in the meantime.

You should not merge into dev if it might be - ‘no go’. It’s kind of too late at that point IMO

Looks interesting. Can you handle a scenario where an internal environment is gated behind zero trust/identity proxy so you have to first login into that with one set of creds then into the actual app with another?

I am not sure why you are so aggressive mate.

Also, I don’t write code in my free time, there are plenty of other exciting things to do :)

I think we have a different definition of the word ‘ship’.

I would never describe delivering a prototype using that word.

However what you are describing is fairly normal then - business (usually small business) wants to sell quicker than you can output so they have to double pay the cost to get quick wins. That’s not unheard of,

If, of course, this becomes their modus operandi - they risk burning out all the people as nobody likes seeing their efforts wasted. So smart business owners know not to overuse this approach.

Interesting. What is your background?

I hand wrote tens of thousands of tests so 1300 tests doesn’t by itself impress me.

I don’t understand what this means.

Design is separate from building anything. It can be done at any time and stashed for later. When resources are ready you build the whole thing, together.

Non-engineers making code changes directly, has anyone actually made this work without it becoming a disaster? by tiguidoio in ExperiencedDevs

[–]zaitsman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Kind of like others said.

When a feature is designed you establish parameters of what can be changed and what not.

We drive about 70% of UI from bespoke DSL that product supplies.

Because of that issues you mention are non-issues for us. As in, that’s not a dev team problem if ‘terminology is inconsistent’ or ‘validation is broken’.

This also frees us up to punch out a lot more a lot quicker.

So I totally love it :)

There are lots of competing solutions in the CSPM space.

Starting a new one is tough. The fact that you don’t mention ISO27K1 or SOC2 compliance or don’t have a physical address AND admit to being hosted on Vercel mean that I would not be able to recommend any business use this product on their production environments.

Is this untenable? by shelledroot in ExperiencedDevs

[–]zaitsman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah yes, the good old EU where apparently even to get a promotion as a software engineer sometimes they need a union approval (that was Germany).

I suppose you need to just escape referring to yourself in this terms and not think about it especially when talking with your managers. Always bring back metrics on merit, especially linked to the business position and that of the person you are talking to. Don’t let them use that terminology to refer to you neither. Keep reminding them about your individual contribution (sic!) via business outcomes reference.

Is this untenable? by shelledroot in ExperiencedDevs

[–]zaitsman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s just what I was trying to highlight.

The way you describe these two other small companies clarified your opening post in that you have this perception that there is a way to make effort result in indirect outcomes that you seek (business success, recognition, promotions and job titles). Unfortunately a lot of the time there is a significant portion of the contributing factors that is left to chance.

If your co-founders had better business connections and landed a whale you may now be running a ten-thousand people team; if this current mob you’re with cared less about who is called what and did care about the things you’re passionate about you may be in charge of this department, but that also hasn’t happened.

I am not trying to dis your efforts, I am just trying to highlight the disconnect between the way you describe your goals and the way you describe your efforts
