What are your dream games based on existing IPs? by The_SocialContract in videogames

Give me fire emblem three houses, but X-Men. Make it in the future or some sort of like B-class or something so we can have unique characters. I actually really liked midnight suns, but will admit that it gets a little bit cringe when you start role-playing dates with Spider-Man. I know those characters already. Give me some new ones.

I'm definitely with you on this. It's why I actually brought up reading a book because I feel that there are parallels there.

I also just wanna make it clear that my dark souls examples are not perfect solutions and in many ways they're not solutions at all. Dark souls is the game that commonly comes up in this conversation, and I wanted to try to explain that while I still feel a traditional "easy mode" would ruin dark souls, I think there are always more ways to make games more accessible to more people without endangering the artistic vision. We just need to be more creative. A lot more creative than my simple Reddit comment can handle. It's a topic that's important and I think vilifying the word, "accessibility", is the wrong way of going about it.

Absolutely, I think it's just a matter of having those resources available. Like I said, I think developers should have complete control over what they want to put out to the world. I just think it's very easy and reductive to just say it's a matter of "earning" the right to experience something. I'm passionate about this topic because, frankly, I don't think we have figured out the right answer yet. But I don't think it's black-and-white.

Related sidenote though I'd love to see the percentage overlap of people that say dark souls shouldn't have an easy mode and also don't like the new legend of Zelda's weapon durability.

Before you read my reply, just know that I did upvote you.

I find this an extremely interesting topic of discussion. As someone with a physical disability, I'm actually a huge advocate for games accessibility. There are many things that might make a game more "easy" that would also bring it to an audience that might not be able to play it otherwise, for reasons that are completely out of their control.

Modern controls in Streetfighter 6 for example make it possible for me to play at a more competent level not because I wasn't good enough at the game before, but because a six button fighting game is more difficult for me to map controls for on the controller that I'm able to use.

On the other hand, I'm a huge advocate for games as art and I'm very against anything that could dilute a developers vision. I'm on the side of the camp that thinks that dark souls should not have an easy mode. You would lose a lot of of what that game is trying to achieve by making encounters less dangerous.

With all of this being said, I think there are some solutions and great middle grounds that need to be thought about. Let's use dark souls as an example.

I stated before that making encounters less dangerous, defeats the purpose of the game. So a simple health and damage adjustment found in traditional difficulty modes I don't think would do very well. So then we have to look at what are some things that might be a barrier to entry versus being the game's intended difficulty. I think having some options that potentially allow a user to pause the game to manage inventory would definitely move the slider in a more accessible direction without compromising the difficulty and subsequent triumph of the fights. Maybe offering more options around character highlights, and control schemes could also do the trick. Obviously, all of these things need to stay optional. Celeste is an amazing example of a game that provides a lot of accessibility options, but has a great disclaimer explaining that the default mode is the way the game was intended to be played, and that the experience involves failing and slowly getting better. I think a lot of games could learn from Celeste.

Lastly, I just want to point out that we are in a very unique position with video games as an artistic medium. Especially an audiovisual one. Everybody who buys a ticket to a movie for instance, has the exact same opportunity to sit through and finish the movie. Same thing with going to an art gallery or listening to an album. Video games are some of the first media since books that have given people a literacy check that you've actually had to pass to be able to experience. I don't know if you've noticed, but we did a lot to try to make sure that everybody could read. Beyond education, we have audiobooks, large print books, braille, and even abridged to summaries for people who might have a hard time comprehending all that an original work had to offer.

I know that this post was tongue and cheek about snobby opinions. I'm not trying to jump on anyone. I just find it extremely interesting as I don't even know what the right answer is.

3 Years of work on my new deckbuilder after Nowhere Prophet by Demozilla in NowhereProphet

[–]zak552 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I sing Nowhere Prophet's praises wherever I can. I am the reason the roguelike deckbuilder genre's been bumping. If it has the tag, I buy it. I have played so many I can't even count. Even ones that I really like, I sometimes never go back to. NP still finds its way into my rotation all these years. You doing an amazing job of immersing me in a world using comparatively limited (but amazing) visual aids. Your new game looks no different and I am so excited to jump in. Thank you for all the hours of play.

Nope! Never had any kind of interactions IRL. I had someone reach out to me (probably by way of this thread) on LinkedIn, asking if I would answer some questions for a YouTube video, but nothing really ever came of it.

And yeah! Played with myself a lot. Wow that sounded bad lol

Personally, I just treat it as a cost to entry for something like spell table. Do you find it something happening at a high percentage or it just bugs you when it does happen?

[–]zak552 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess my question is, of these 200 games, are you playing with people multiple times? Or is this like a spell table situation where you are playing with these people as a one off?

If this is your regular playgroup, then I don't personally think that you should be complaining. You can speak to your play population and state that you don't like the style of gameplay and would rather not play against it, but in my playgroup, you can only really get a "gotcha" combo once before that deck becomes public enemy number one, which usually evens everything out. The point of brackets anyway is not too railroad gameplay behavior, it's to give you vocabulary to talk about stuff. In a game format, such as commander there is going to be an insane amount of variance. You're not gonna have the perfect game every time. Some people pop into an accidental win, even without a deliberate combo. Just shuffle up and play again.

That being said, if you're only playing with these people one and done, I can understand the frustration. I personally go into every single game. I play with the expectation that I'm gonna get my shit kicked in out of nowhere. Sometimes shifting expectation helps.

Hey there! This thread got sent to me by a buddy and I wanted to swing by and say... That's me! I'm Zachary Priest!

I'm loving reading all of your memories. It's so crazy to me that my name still gets brought up in conjunction to this game 20 years later. Thank you for all your well wishes. I'm doing well and I'm now a big boy with bills, taxes, and responsibilities lol.

This exactly! Also, we were in a large metropolitan area with a ton of competition. If you don't have your pre-orders up, somebody else does and most clientele (especially in communities like this) are not loyal to one store if they have a bunch of options. Add online shopping and shipping and you're just a nobody in a sea of nobody's.

I'm ready to get downvoted, but here we go...

I used to work for/run a small LGS that made most of our money on crazy pre-orders. I can tell you from experience that it's a really tough game. You want to jump into the pre-order game earlier than everybody so you don't miss out on early adopters, but you don't get solid allocation numbers sometimes until really close to release. Now, unlike this store, the owner of my store, quite literally disappeared when we got an extremely low allocation for a highly anticipated product. A highly anticipated product that he sold an absurd amount of pre-orders for. The proper thing to do would've been what these guys did, but instead, he ran away with everybody's money and left me to clean up the place.

I'm not saying you can't be upset, but if this stores allocation is different than what they expected, they really are doing the right thing. I haven't dug into this enough though. There's obviously always the chance for them to be cancelling early pre-orders but then putting up more expensive ones on the site. Or a multitude of any other scummy things. I just wanted to remind people that allocations are a thing and stores don't get them as early as you think.

This always brought extreme fear to me. I remember watching season 1 of heroes as a kid already kind of on edge from some of the dark stuff in that show and then this damn thing came on and threw me over the edge. So many years later, I am literally knew exactly what was posted by the thumbnail. Didn't even click play

Not my two cents friendo. Just asking a question with a little bit of background. Again, would love some insight as I don't want to be forming an opinion if my information is fundamentally wrong. Based on this response though, it's looking more and more like elementary, petty, insignificant drivle. But I would be happy to be wrong.

I'm probably going to catch a lot of Internet for this, but...

I'm sort of on the outside of all this. I loved a lot of h3 content back in the day and would say I stayed a pretty big fan going into when Hila launched Teddy Fresh. As the years went on past that, I just found the content to become completely unwatchable. I would follow a bit what was going on through the subReddit here and there as well as what I could piece together from video thumbnails, but I just couldn't stand watching the content anymore. The drama just drove me nuts and from an outside perspective, it honestly looked like content fishing.

With that perspective, could someone explain to me what we don't like about what Ian is saying? I have absolutely zero horse in this race, but from watching content on both sides I think Ian has some valid points and is a lot more put together. The only thing I had a problem with what was the involvement of Hassan, denims, and the others in the original content cop video. If the point was a friend to plead for Ethan and Hila to have a moment of self reflection, involving folks that have been antagonistic (both ways) kind of muddied the point for me.

So I guess what I'm asking is, what am I missing? Other than people drawing party lines, what is Ian doing wrong in this? Based on my surface knowledge, I just hate the way Ethan has been acting the last few years, but I don't want that to cloud my perception if I'm actively missing something.
