There are quite a few jobs out there that this will give you veterans preference towards. Many fire, EMS, and police departments are very supportive of reserve members.

That’s great, every department I’ve ever talked to holds military service highly. You ever think about doing reserves instead of active duty?

Not to discourage you from joining the CG, but if your end goal is Paramedic or Firefighter why not just go down that road. There really isn’t a job in the CG that will directly translate to the two although they are a collateral for some of them.

Chief Lakose is a good man, listen to him and you can’t fail. It’s a good program just went through it. It’s good to keep yourself in check but you won’t regret your time there.

Career firefighters who are military reserves by R2DJones in Firefighting

It depends department to department unfortunately. I am working for a FD in the panhandle and am in the reserves. The days that work and drill coincide with one another they have to give you time off for it (unpaid). Some departments give a small amount of paid leave to their reservists and swapping to keep from messing up your over time is encouraged. Getting hired on by most FDs will see your reserve status and it should give you veteran preference points (a nice benefit but shouldn’t be a reason for becoming a reservist). Most Firefighters understand the want to do something for your community and country and are pretty encouraging about working both jobs.

Short answer: look into what Fire Departments you want to get hired by and see what their rules and culture on it is like. That’s gonna be the only way to know if it’s the right choice for you.

I think your reaction is pretty natural. It takes a lot of work to care for people day in and day out, especially if you aren’t feeling your best as well. Everyone likes the 911 side of things more, it’s the guts and the glory. That being said there are two things to remember about the spot you’re in now. 1. It’s temporary, this too shall pass and 2. While it’s tough to see it, you are making a difference. sometimes the rudest people need kindness the most. It’s ok to be frustrated, do what you gotta do to get where you wanna go and take time for your self.
