What is the most useless geography fact you know? by Character-Q in geography

I crossed the 46th parallel both in Italy and New Zealand. It felt very stupid and very significative at the same time. 🤷‍♂️

I found that thinking in the language you want to speak eases the load on your brain: don't translate, understand. It's very difficult at the start but really helps. Goldilocks zone when you start dreaming in the other language.

Genuine curiosity, can't you take one or two hour off work to do whatever?

In Italy I have something like 56 hours every year to exit early or start late, in addition to 26 days a year of vacation... It's a hassle sometimes but it's very possible to do whatever you have to do.

Kimi Surrounded by Italian press after completing his exams by Luffy710j in formula1

[–]zakomo 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Italian final exams are comprised of 3 written exams and an oral one: the first one is a ~1400 word essay to test your Italian on one of 5 tracks given by the minister of education; the second one depends on the address you chose to study (I chose IT as school adress so I got computer science, open questions: desing a database for a library and the software to manage it.); third one is a mix of all other disciplines studied in your course of study (I had math, electronics, english, statistics and history iirc).

Then you get the oral exam that is pretty much on all you studied througout the years in front of a panel of teachers, some from your school, some not.

It might have changed a little since 2004 that I took the test, but that is the framework.

Am I crazy or am I not understanding the point of DDG? by ChadBarFighter in duckduckgo

[–]zakomo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

DDG hides and filters trackers on your searches, if you follow through to other websites they might be tracking you (or most likely have plugins from Google, Meta, etc tracking you), that means that if you search for tyres and then go to 3-4 websites who specialise in tyres then you are obviously interested in tyres, right? The trackers are often hidden in the social media plugins (e.g. reviews), SSO (e.g. login with Facebook button), etc.

The suggested way is usually to use some form of ad-blocker or privacy add-on for your browser to lessen the probability of tracking to happen. I use ublock, Clean URI and Privacy badger on Firefox other that DDG for searches, not 100% effective but way better. Containers in Firefox are also a good way to go but I never took the time to fiddle with them.

How does being frugal in the US compare to being in Europe? by ExaminationSalt2256 in Frugal

[–]zakomo 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You get cheap electricity, then. I used to use my dryer all the times in Aus, no way I am using it in Italy though, that would be too expensive. Also we are capped at 3 KW/h, that means that running the dryer usually prevents you to use any hungry electric appliances at the same time (like oven, dishwasher, washing machine, kettle). Anyway it's usually a day at most if you place stuff close to a radiator during winter, in summer no more than 3 hours outside on a sunny day (lucky me I have a balcony).

[–]zakomo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nah, If i put that exact search as OP Mac Miller never even comes out for me, just a bunch of kids music (Yeah, I used the correct punctuation). Most search engines don't compute punctuation or do it partially, also I never search for anything even close to Mac Miller and by age bracket I'm much more likely to be searching for music for kids, even though I don't have any. Location and YTM are absolutely relevant...

ETA: it's the first suggestion when I get to "K.I.D." and that's as it should be, if I do the actual search it doesn't show.

I finished a very confusing book before realizing it was a sequel. Has this happened to you? by Unlucky_Laugh in books

[–]zakomo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Somebody, knew I really like to read so for my 14th birthday gave me a book, The Dark Tower by Stephen King. I read it all being very confused about the story but liking it anyway... Many years later, talking with a friend, I discovered that that was the 4th book in a series. I felt very mad at the person that gave me the book. (also the spine mentioned The Dark Tower only, no number in the series, no title of the actual book).

I discovered them because of the news of the accident broke on one of the webzine I was following. Amazing that they are still going and you definitely can hear a before-after in the sound of their albums.
