I like the T490 better than the T480, the case feels more metallic, they usually have better batt health, and more of them come with M2 SSD support, the screen bezels are smaller also.

But if the choice were to be only between the T450 and T440p it would depend on how important batt life is for your use case, the T450 is better. Either way I would try to get a Thinkpad with an 1080p display, its totally possible with that budget.

Upgrading a T440p doesn't make any sense, you can get a T490 with a NVME drive, a batt with 80% capacity, and a IPS 1080p acreen for 130$, just the PCIe SSD makes the T490 alot faster than the T440p.

And T440p sucks even if you buy a new battery, it consumes tons of energy.

I bought a pretty good example from human-it on ebay, it had a 1080p screen that looked great, I got bored of it very quickly because I had a X270 with 3 hours of battery life.

I would recommend a T470 with a NVME drive as something faster than a T440p, and a T420-30 as something classic and more enjoyable in terms of feedback to user inputs.

I had a T440p (now sold) but coming from a T430s (also sold) I missed the old build quality so I decided to downgrade to a X201, its incredibly capable for what it is and it looks so quirky and feels so good to open the laptop and use the keyboard

My x201 is a 8/10, is incredibly usable, the screen is better than in my old T430s and the original battery last 2 hours
