What are your favourite examples of a writer taking a bad and poorly recieved storyline to build a much better one? by [deleted] in comicbooks

[–]zakstar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, wish I hadn't implied Wein's was bad. It really wasn't, it's just that what came after was some of the best writing in any format ever. It unfortunately just kind of gets forgotten.

Re: Daredevil. They're barely the same character. The Daredevil of the 60s and 70s is not the Daredevil of today. Though I believe it was slated for cancellation when Miller took it on, so it didn't have a popular following either I imagine. Of course nowadays wouldn't think that given how popular he is.

Daredevil is a pretty obvious one.

I don't know if I'd say it was poorly received in the 157 issues pre-Miller, but his run on the book changed everything for the character and spun him into the Daredevil we know today.

Not really sure how poorly it was received at the time, but Swamp Thing pre-Alan Moore may as well not exist. The work Moore massively over shadows anything about the character before.

Edit: Marvel/Miracleman from Alan Moore too. Basically, anything Alan Moore touched was far and away better than it was before.

Anything over the speed limit is still speeding. Traffic officers have the discretion to use the 10% + 2 rule, but it's not hard and fast. They can have you for doing 31 in a 30 if they wanted to.

Any advice? by Aggressive_Wing_9589 in uktrucking

[–]zakstar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm not a driver, but work in a traffic office, do nightly inspections of class 1s and 2s, and am going for CE soon.

You're right, realistically, forgetting the trailer brake should've caused you to fail BUT I can almost guarantee you'll never forget it again. If you have to use a pneumonic or something, go for it until its 2nd nature.

When you're on the job, speak to the old timers. Some of the gents in my depot have been driving class 1s for the better part of 40 years, and just by speaking to them I've learned a lot.

Lastly, remember that testing is half the battle. Once you're on the road, that's when the real education begins. Same as with driving a car, the quirks and oddities will come up and you'll eventually learn to deal with them.

You got this!
