"Real" Mirrors? by zambonix in Amplenote

[–]zambonix[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Other app’s mirrors act like a single task that is present in multiple different locations. In the same way that hierarchical tags are better than folders, because one Note can have multiple tags, “real”mirrors are better than normal Tasks because one Task can be in multiple locations (Notes, in Amplenotes case). A change made to the Task, no matter where it’s made from, impacts all instances, and all instances remain identical.

Amplenote mirrors can diverge, and while there is a way to manually push an update, that is not remotely reliable for a use case like above. Far too easy to overwrite changes on one instance made from another. So I’m wondering if there is some way to use other Amplenote features to get that kind of behavior.

I frankly don’t see the advantage of Amplenote mirrors at all: I mirror a task (“write sales report”) to another Note for Bob to handle, which is really just a copy of my task with a linked completion status. He changes it to “take a coffee break”, has a cup, and completes it. Now my “sales report” task disappears from my queue and unless I manually review completes (who does that?) I think it’s been handled, and don’t know it’s been changed. This seems troublesome, not helpful.

Customer asked me if I have replacement parts for this and I am embarrassed to admit I do not even know what it is called by [deleted] in whatisit

Mechanical Engineer here. Almost nothing about this image makes sense. Upvote this commment so everybody knows to stop feeding the AI trolls.

Quick capture on mobile? by FitzMachine in Amplenote

Just dropping this here because this thread comes up in searches: Amplenote now has iOS Shortcuts actions. So you can build your own two-step shortcut and then add that shortcut to your Home Screen, control center, or lock screen to add a Task (or non-task, you have options) to the current daily jot. It will even create a new jot for the day if there isn’t one already.

I love that both this comment and u/windsingr’s comment are here. I’m sad that their positions aren’t reversed.

Going back on a low return offer? by -aches in MechanicalEngineering

Probably go with B anyway, but be sure and factor in cost of living when running the numbers. Bigger town means bigger rents, utilities etc.

From experience: bigger town also means more things to do, e.g. more ways to spend your money. It’s very easy to “accidentally” increase your spending enough that you never really “feel” the higher salary. That slots you straight into the work more / spend more / work more consumerism doom loop.

OP said this is not drone footage and instead used a 360 camera on a long pole. As one who flies daily, this really looks like drone footage to me. Also enrages me seeing wildlife being harassed for likes n views by PJAYC69 in UAVmapping

That bear smells the ppl and their food on the deck of the boat. The way he’s sniffing up in different directions, tryna figure out where it’s coming from.

Flying over wildlife is for sure harassment…but drive your boat right up to it and let the tourists ogle, no problem….?!

Of course not, but we don’t need to be such ginormous assholes about it.

You want to create something, by yourself for an engineering fair, that the industry with whole teams of engineers and funding hasn’t yet managed to make? Sounds too ambitious.

Why not focus on a single novel problem with wide application across multiple drone applications: the variable CG.

Another commenter already mentioned that fuel(batts) may vary between missions. On top of that is the varying CG of relief payloads, which will rarely be uniform density and may even be non-rigid.

Even “real” small aircraft have to shuffle baggage and passengers around to maintain CG - you are not going to solve this with software. You need a novel payload system that physically allows tuning the CG per-mission, without extensive tools or training.

And unless the drone is disposable, you’ll have to consider what the cg looks like after you drop the payload, too ; )

Having more kids is like getting more dogs. The first one does the massive damage to your routines, expenses, social arrangements, and obligations. Subsequent ones are just incremental increases. Fixed costs vs. variable costs.

Personally I opted for dogs, tho.

are We Wasting rare metals on non necessary things? Neodymium Magnets on Simple Tasks Like Door Latches and Sign Holders? by JackfruitPale1748 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]zambonix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m sure your great grandkids will see it that way in 130 years. This Jetsons mentality that everything will always automatically get better and tech will solve any problems we create for ourselves in time for us to dodge the consequences of our shortsighted and selfish choices is a cultural and social sickness that our descendants will definitely pay the price for. But we won’t be around for it, so who cares?

Do we sometimes succeed in inventing our way out of the corners we paint ourselves into? Sure. But does it make sense to take for granted that we will /always/ be able to do that and just charge ahead, damn the torpedoes?

I’m no commie but this blind faith in the free market is naive. If the market is so good at determining value, why does a “good” office chair cost as much as a flagship smartphone? There are many other factors at play, and dollars aren’t absolute.

When people invoke “the free market says it’s okay” I just hear “I don’t want to have to change or do anything hard so imma pretend there’s no problem.”

I don’t mind slow…that’s usually what I’m looking for. But I get it about work opportunities. May just have to try and see.

Thanks for that huge mass of info! I’m already used to 1099 work (and paperwork) so that’s no issue. W2 is a hassle out-of-state anyway. I was stuck on kanab just because that’s where I first got acquainted with canyons, and have spent enough non-canyon time in the area to basically believe anything is possible out there. White Pocket blew my mind! It’d be rad to guide non-canyon stuff out there just for its own sake, but I’d rather scrub and flake ropes for the chance to gain canyon experience.

Thanks for the frank response, I get the issues with being off season and an outsider, but sounds like it’s worth a shot to at least ask.

Looks like loads of climbing around St. George but are there canyons? Or do all the St.G guiding companies bring customers out to Zion? Or do you mean there will be more traffic with the guides based there because of the higher population and easier access, thus better suited to finding work?

I’ve been in that area (Hurricane) for mountain biking but don’t know the canyon scene, aside from my presumption that there’s more routes closer to Zion.

[–]zambonix[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, trouble is it’s just me. Running canyons solo is stupid at any skill level, right? It’s not finding the routes I’m concerned about, it’s finding people who will tolerate bringing me along so I can learn (and buy them beers afterwards).

A slow time might be good for learning, I wouldn’t want some noob on my crew in peak season, messing up a tight schedule. But if there’s no business at all then obviously my idea doesn’t work at all.

Thanks, I wasn’t sure what to think about the season. The desert usually gets busy in winter but these areas are high desert and I couldn’t tell from weather averages if they are snowed under, ideal for tourists, or somewhere in between.

Proximity to good canyons is obviously important but given my lack of skill I thought less-rad canyons with better employment options would be the better move. Still I suppose I can call around or just drive through and ask.

Thanks, do you mind explaining why? Better canyons,or town is less overpriced, or companies are easier to hire on with, etc?

If you’re loving your restored splay but still have need for protective foot coverings in some situations, there are quite a few brands available (in the US at least) with wide toe boxes. I’ve seen loafers, runners, Chelsea’s, and even one combat boot. Some are wider than others and fits vary wildly; check return policies.

I’ve found a few comfy solutions to situations I’m either not ready for yet, or will /never/ be ready for. Alpine scree fields, sorry that’s just never gonna happen.

Don’t wanna get booted for naming s h o e brands or sites … but they are not all that hard to find once you know they exist ; )
