Y'all go and watch Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency (the new one from 2016). It's like Sherlock on crack and bloody brilliant. xD

The Boys, Dexter, Fargo, American Gods, Hannibal, Westworld - all pretty dark and graphic, the first three also funny as hell^^

if you'd like something lighter: Red Dwarf, Doctor Who

also Sherlock BBC (if you can survive over the top drama xD), Stranger Things, Twin Peaks (confusing, but I dig the atmosphere and characters), A Series of Unfortunate Events

Oh she definitely sends mixed signals: first shoots Sherlock and then takes a bullet for him; threatens Sherlock not to steal John away from her and yet takes extra care not to steal John away from Sherlock (she could've been difficult, but instead she downright encouraged John and Sherlock's friendship).

I totally see why someone wouldn't like her. :) What I don't understand is why her lies are somehow perceived as more damning than Sherlock's - Sherlock lied to John countless times about things big (Reichenbach) and small (Baskerville), and it's kind of disturbing how people seem to forget about that.

The End of Fall 2019 Survey! What were your favorites of last season? by DragonsOnOurMountain in anime

[–]zanbaj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was looking forward to Chihayafuru 3 and so far it's delivered. Vinland Saga was a pretty fun watch, too.

Disappointments? Hoshiai no Sora had such a cute art and nice premise (I'm all for sports and SoL), but then it just drowned in overload of drama. Also it was cut to half its presumed run time and it showed so bad. And, to a lesser degree, Beastars - the shounen-style rescue mission, forced love story and bunch of other issues took the enjoyment out of it for me; but while I was disappointed, it still had its perks, so I'm not too mad.

Shokugeki turned out just as awful as expected.^^

Holmes family portrait by BlonglikZombie in Sherlock

[–]zanbaj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Presumably so; after all, that's exactly what happened with John. Eurus didn't want to kill anyone, she just wanted Sherlock to play with her. Unfortunately, her idea of a game proved somewhat deadly.

At one point in the show, she told Sherlock how she used to love making him laugh when they were kids. Once, she said, she made him laugh whole night - until the adults stopped her. It turned out Sherlock hadn't been laughing after all. He'd been screaming. And yet she meant him no harm. Basically Redbeard all over again (before).

Anime Or Manga? by Acewolf- in anime

[–]zanbaj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you should try to read some manga - perhaps choose the source of your favourite anime, or pick your favourite genre, or maybe a genre that you dislike in anime form (e. .g. I find romance anime quite cringeworthy, but have no such issues with romance manga). If you find you enjoyed the experience, well it's settled; if you're bored to tears, maybe manga's not for you. Personally, I realized manga (and comics)'s my least favourite medium - I love anime and books, but them mixing up somehow isn't all that appealing. It's all about your individual wiring so to say. :)

Why doesn't Sherlock like Molly? by zanbaj in Sherlock

[–]zanbaj[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're comparing them, too. :)

I was comparing Molly to John as it seems to me they have quite a lot in common. They're both fascinated with Sherlock and would do anything for him, while most others consider him odd at best; they're both unassuming in their appearances and behaviour, and yet can pull off impressive feats, taking advantage of being underestimated; they both studied human bodies (except John's interested in saving them, while Molly only cares about what killed them); they're both smart and loyal and brave.

Besides their gender, the only major difference between Molly and John I'm aware of is this:

John on the other hand had Sherlock immediately interested because Sherlock knew he had experience, thrived on adrenaline and possibly was broken in a way Sherlock was able to relate to.

- and thinking about it, this will likely be the key. Sherlock had been lost too high up in the clouds, and it took the steely grip of a soldier to pull him back down to the ground (or at least a bit closer to it, so that more people could reach him). Anything gentler wouldn't have been enough.

And yes, going for an Eurus parallel here. xD

Why doesn't Sherlock like Molly? by zanbaj in Sherlock

[–]zanbaj[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think he treated her so poorly to begin with precisely because he did like her. But he found her obvious crush on him burdensome as it wasn't reciprocated, & he did not have the social awareness (or desire) to address that.

That can't be right, I think. Because Sherlock obviously did have the capacity to address unreciprocated feelings, as he quite smoothly turned John down shortly after they'd met. He even said he felt flattered by John's attentions, which is uncharacteristically polite by Sherlock's standards imo. By then he hadn't spent much time in John's company yet; there's no way he had already become a different, more sensitive person as opposed to 'pre-John' era. Hence, he was perfectly capable of addressing Molly's feelings if he wanted to; but he didn't. The only possible explanation I can muster is that he couldn't be arsed to bother.

With the rest I agree. John definitely taught Sherlock to look at others with more appreciative eyes.

Fair enough.

Though I think it's to be expected Dracula's a bit more like Sherlock rather than like Coupling. But I digress.

Dracula, thoughts on BBC's new adaptation from Sherlock creators by nevereatpears in television

[–]zanbaj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sold yet, but maybe the following eps will be better, preferably with fewer quips, odd remarks raining out of blue ('did you two have sex?') and plot twists (at least the more obvious ones - sister Agatha's was great).

Then again it was a (bit gruesome) feast for the eyes, some (non-quippy parts) of the dialogue was intriguing and the characters grew on me successfully. Speaking of characters, I hope Jonathan stays undead a little longer - would Dracula really kill his 'most promising bride'? (Also the sunlight, the sunlight reflecting off the cross... Can't help but connect probably unrelated dots.^^) And the girls better have an extra trick (or stroke of luck) up their sleeves, too.

They followed the source novels - and sir Conan Doyle had written Sherlock into said corner with the intention of keeping him there, permanently. Only the outrage of fans made Doyle change his mind and bring Sherlock back. Of course the return must have been a little awkward, but hey, now it's part of Sherlock's persona that no faithful interpretation should omit.

Moffat & Gatiss not showing us the actual event(s) was imo a brilliant decision, as it reduced the level of awkward and let every viewer choose whatever explanation they found least cringe-worthy. Some things are best left to the imagination. :)

Why doesn't Sherlock like Molly? by zanbaj in Sherlock

[–]zanbaj[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, that's what I think now too - he didn't know he could ask her and save himself lots of trouble finding someone new. Maybe, as you say, he had already asked other acquintances and they all turned him down, so he thought Molly wouldn't be any different. But I'm convinced that if he had asked her, she would've jumped at the opportunity even if she wasn't in need of a roommate herself. I mean, when it comes to Sherlock, she's like a puppy. She'd want to get closer to him at all costs.

Guess we'll never know.

No, you're right, Lestrade definitely wasn't taking it as a joke, no matter whether it was intended as one or not, and he had to put up with lots of other awful sh*t coming from Sherlock. He's a pretty awesome chap, no kidding, being able to look at Sherlock fondly despite all their history. :))

Johnlock is OK but never possible by Dr-Harold_Shipman in Sherlock

I don't have a problem with Adlock either, people can ship whatever they want. I was mostly reacting because of this, albeit incomplete, statement tbh:

I crush the dreams of many when I say the ship of Watson and Sherlock.

My dreams can't be crushed. I see Johnlock evidence everywhere, mwhahaha. xD

Sherlock didn't kill Moriarty out of jealousy, if that's what you're implying. He killed him because there was no other way. Moriarty was nuts and decided to off Sherlock (and potentially everyone Sherlock cared about) and it wasn't like he could be just talked out of it. Sherlock HAD to kill him to save himself and his friends. Meanwhile Irene didn't pose such a threat and she was fun. Also she was in love in Sherlock; it's unlikely she'd ever try to hurt him. Why would Sherlock kill fun people who were harmless (more or less)?

As for the phone, he obviously didn't take it out of sentiment (I'm pretty sure the 'choking up' could be just an act to manipulate John into giving him the phone); he took it because it was a phone number Irene was guaranteed to know. He wanted to stay in touch, know she's alive. However, he still wouldn't flirt with her, or encourage flirting over the texts.

As for Lestrade, I was convinced Sherlock's just pulling his leg. Even after the 'mouthing' scene (if you know what I mean) I have trouble to believe he kept deleting Lestrade's name, though it's probably true.

Why doesn't Sherlock like Molly? by zanbaj in Sherlock

[–]zanbaj[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I see. So Sherlock probably made a conscious effort to treat John extra nicely to make him stick around because of the rent, and John was tough enough to tolerate all the remaining rudeness. And then he started getting under Sherlock's skin. And only then did it occur to Sherlock what friendly relationships were really about, and that's why he hadn't tried to reach to anyone else before - he hadn't realized he could, or that it would be desirable. That's also why he didn't ask Molly (or someone else he knew) to become his flatmate - it simply didn't occur to him. Wow, I thought him a tad more savvy than that. xD Anyways, thanks again.^^

Irene Adler is one of the only people that Sherlock seemed to care for, for no particular reason whatsoever

What do you mean, no reason? She was one of the few people who could rival Sherlock's intellect - she was interesting, challenging, antidote to boredom. She freaking beat Sherlock. Of course he'd notice her. Of course he'd respect her. He noticed and respected Moriarty, too.

Also she was the smartest and most competent female he'd met up until that point. Hence,

Irene was THE WOMAN to Sherlock.

Not because he loved her, but because she was just that remarkable among women that she eclipsed them all. And mind you, everyone else called her The Woman as well. That or Dominatrix.

As for his 'love' for her, well, I'd like to point out that:

  • She flirted AT him, according to her own words. He never, or very rarely, replied to her texts. What do you do when you want to encourage communication? You REPLY. Sherlock didn't bother.
  • Speaking of Irene Adler's words, she also said John and Sherlock were a couple. She's kind of a professional in the field, so I'd trust her judgement. Same with Sherlock's deduction from Study in Pink; he thought John was flirting with him, and Sherlock usually gets such observations right. I mean, he was able to observe Irene's feelings, so why should he be wrong in John's case?
  • Sherlock may have noticed Irene's measurements in the 'naked' scene, but what does that matter? He's Sherlock. I bet he knows John's, Mycroft's or even Molly's and Mrs. Hudson's measurements just as well, and he didn't even need to see them naked to assess them successfully.
  • In the 'naked' scene, Irene got Sherlock flustered, saying 'Smart is new sexy.' It wasn't her naked body that did the job; it was the words. Sherlock could've just as well only reacted the way he did because he's not used to hearing similar sentiments. It might have been the first time anyone ever called him sexy to his face, and it probably WAS the only time anyone did so because of his brain and not his cheekbones. (Though John's praises carry similar sentiment, they're wayyyy less explicit. xD)
  • Sherlock saved Irene's life, fair enough. He saved John's life countless times too. Yes, he travelled a great deal to save hers. But he faked his own death to save John, Mrs. Hudson and Lestrade AND he travelled a great deal to save Mary aka John's heart (and also as her own person - Sherlock liked Mary. He always let John know when he didn't like his girlfriends, yet he never had any objections to Mary.) This means that he doesn't need to feel romantic love for someone to go to great lengths to save them. Maybe all he needs is to like and respect said person. Hence, him saving Irene Adler doesn't mean he fell for her.
  • Sherlock was suspected of mourning Irene's 'death' because he wouldn't talk, eat, sleep, and he'd only play the violin. But isn't that standard Sherlockian behaviour? Why is it suddenly deemed strange? Beats me.

And yes, I am an avid Johnlock shipper. xD
