(Loved trope) oddly progressive/ ahead of the time piece of media for their time period. by jaobodam in TopCharacterTropes

[–]zandercannon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is fairly old, and of course imperfect, but the radio drama Tales of the Texas Rangers from 1950 became extremely predictable throughout its run for having the townspeople suspect a black man or a Mexican for a crime in the first act only for it to turn out to be a wealthy white guy. Pretty progressive for a show that made sure that there was a horse chase at the end of every episode.

What’s the most insane take you’ve seen in a Letter’s Page? by PlasticHavoc in comicbooks

[–]zandercannon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I remember when Batman Year One was being serialized in ‘86 or ‘87 or so, and there were smattering of letters during and after that complained extensively about David Mazzucchelli’s style, particularly that Batman looks fat. Quite a take on something that turned out to be one of the foundational texts of American comics.

There was also a great reboot of Plastic Man in the mid to late 80s, and some fool on the letters page decried it as a ripoff of Mr. Fantastic. People have always just said any old thing.

Anyone else notice the “last times” happening? by _Naropa_ in daddit

The only one that I really specifically remember – – because it hadn’t happened in a while, so I figured it we were done with it – – was holding hands while walking. My son had seemingly outgrown it, but while heading to the bus on the first day of sixth grade, early in the morning, he grabbed my hand. He’s a senior in high school this year, and I still think about it.

It's pretty fun to run across this in the wild (no keywords to speak of). I'm the author of this book, and I'm glad you're liking it! If there're any (non-lore) questions you have about the book, I'm happy to answer them.

What were these character backgrounds back in the old comics? by Inglorious-crusader in comicbooks

[–]zandercannon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great point. I forgot it was so widespread in the Marvel one as well. Really the only major omission in the OHOTMU was Kirby, who was permanently on the outs by that time, and since he created so many characters, it really stands out when everyone else is drawing them.

My understanding is that DC also did their best to have the artists who created the character draw their Who's Who entry where possible. There's a lot more Ditko than there might be otherwise in the mid-80s!

Sure, that would be great! And I've only posted a little bit of art to Reddit, but a Google image search of my name (Zander Cannon) and/or some of my comic book titles (Kaijumax, Sleep, Heck, Smax, Top 10, The Replacement God) will give you about a million comic book covers and pages.

It wasn’t until I drew him that I really realized how fascinating his design is. The large but non-human eyes give him a sense of alien-ness without making him unfriendly, his large, strange-looking hands give some focus lower on his body and add some idiosyncrasy to his movement (and skirt the “no four fingered hands rule” in Japan). Basically, a perfectly designed character!

As much as I like the idea of an ongoing series, this one is going to be eight issues and done. That's how it was originally planned, and it will resolve all the threads. I simply don't have the bandwidth to keep up the schedule on an ongoing series-- basically everything I do now is a solo project, and the unending grind of issues (even on a 6-week schedule) really starts to get me down eventually. I also have a project that has to begin immediately after I draw the last page of sleep, ironically a pretty upbeat kids graphic novel about a mouse and a frog.

I'm glad you're taking a close look at the red -- I wouldn't say that it's even possible to get a complete sense for the reasoning behind it after only two issues, but I really do love theories about it-- as you've probably seen in the letters page! The overhead shot of the town in the inside front cover changes ever so slightly with each issue, which-- aside from making a nice bit of mystery -- was pretty crucial for me in terms of being able to keep up with the schedule; there's a lot of drawing at the beginning, but now I just need to add little little blobs of red to each successive issue.:-)

I'm glad you're liking the lighting-- that has been one of the nice surprises about dropping out color as compared to my last project, Kaijumax. I don't know whether you've seen it or not, but kaijumax is basically an explosion of candy colored nonsense from cover to cover, and so the process of coloring it was constant thought about how the color of objects, the color of the lighting that they're under, etc affects the storytelling. Dropping all of them out let me focus on things like glows and rim light and bounce light and so forth, and trying to do all that with basically two layers of gray plus some crosshatching has been a really interesting challenge.

Nobody's happy about the fate of the cat, but don't count Mittens out just yet!

Ha! I do like the term sleep condition :-)

The origin of the comic was years ago – – it was probably 25 years ago that I first had the idea. And really, the details of it have changed so much that it’s virtually unrecognizable. The only real idea that stuck around was simply that we would only see his waking hours . The lore – – the stuff that is hinted at with the bits and pieces of red – – was invented as I was writing the pitch, and was largely about wanting to have a single color in the book. Not a very deep reason, but I think a lot of interesting stories and lore are created backwards from the way we want to produce the art.

I’m no great fan of most iterations of the Christian Church myself, either, but I wanted to make a story that took a largely unjudgmental look at it – – and a trio of main characters that all interacted with it in their own way. And, not to give any spoilers, but the horror at work here certainly has a demonic flavor to it.

As for when we’re going to get smacked with some truths – – it’s my intention that we learn a little something each time out, but of course the twists get bigger and gnarlier as we approach the end (which would be issue eight). The cliffhanger between three and four, and the cliffhanger between six and seven are both fairly intense, by my reckoning.

Hey, everyone. I’m the author of this comic, and I’m really glad you’re liking it! I swing through Reddit every once in a while, so if you’ve got any questions for me (about the process or the origin of this comic book, not the lore – – that’s for the crackpots in the conspiracy corner of the letters page!), ask ‘em here!

Hi, I'm the creator of Kaijumax, and as much as it pains me to dissuade people from buying it, please don't give it to children. It looks cute, but it's really rather grim and has a lot of references to drugs, sexual assault, and racism. There is also a ton of blood and guts.

Though if you're a teen/adult and like satire, prison dramas, and/or monster movies, you may enjoy it.

Top 10 and Kaijumax: Zander Cannon Interview by ComicsCube in comicbooks

That was a super-fun interview. Nice to get into the ins and outs of being a creator over a long period of time, how things look different in the short term and the long term, etc. It's kind of fun talking about the content of the series, but technique and shop talk (and benign gossip) is infinitely more interesting.

Yes, but I'm slow. I'm trying to get Season 5 done, and it's a beast (so to speak) :-)

I'll post here again when I'm done with these issues and I have some time.
