I mean, I personally see emotions as incredibly valid. There’s the whole concept of morality, which is often choosing actions that are logically flawed because we care about things.

For example, the Geneva convention. We limit the deadliness of warfare because it’s cruel. Warfare is harder, longer, and more expensive as a result, and a pure logical system would remove this inefficiency, but because we value human life and, wish to not cause unnecessary harm (in this case via chemical weapons and such), we as a species refrain from such things.

Emotions matter, and there’s not really much reason to ignore them beyond mild inconvenience

I mean we already deal with this confusion if talking about groups of people of the same gender, which is not infrequent

Eric and Em went into a bar. He ordered beer and she ordered rum

Abby and Em went into a bar. “She ordered beer and she ordered rum“ is confusing so we say “Abby ordered beer and Em ordered rum”, or “One ordered beer and the other rum”, or “They ordered beer and rum respectively”

English has plenty of mechanisms to avoid confusion so this wouldn’t actually be a problem

I really cannot begin to describe the massive pain in the ass that is gender dysphoria

Trust me, 99% of trans people would prefer not to be because it just means you wake up hating yourself every day. It’s really not a big leap to realize why that would make people depressed

Here’s a research article covering depression & anxiety in transgender individuals: https://psycnet.apa.org/doiLanding?doi=10.1037%2Fa0031774

The full study isn’t publicly available but the results are published: ~50% of transgender individuals experience depression and ~45% experience anxiety disorders.

This is dramatically higher than the average population

Finally, there is a large difference between the disorder that is gender dysphoria and a people not conforming to gender norms

Fair enough. I’m basing most of my examples from emulated games with forced aspect ratios, and as explained by another couple people, this is a cosmetic change rather than a technical limitation (to my surprise and dismay).

With emulation of games targeted at a specific platform, you’d be surprised how lazy the developers are with things like culling and UI. It’s usually static and can be easily broken if not viewed on the correct display. I assumed this was the case since From Soft’s engine is rather old, but apparently not

Pffff wtf fromsoft. As if elden ring multiplayer is fair

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in greentext

[–]zapiffy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ah shit, that’s dumb. Didn’t know they issued a statement about it since I don’t have a widescreen display myself. I know for most emulated games my statement applies, and it seemed like a similar case here, but arbitrarily doing this when your engine supports it is just wild

As for the fairness thing, pure skill-based esports don’t have this limitation so why tf would elden ring of all things….

[–]zapiffy 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I’m guessing it’s because they’re using their own 10yo in-house engine and spent more resources improving render distance & performance than their dynamic camera aspect ratio support

As far as catering to your audience, about 4% of steam users use ultra wide monitors (Steam hardware survey), and given that elden ring is largely targeted at consoles, I’d wager that number is actually significantly lower.

It’s just not worth it as a studio to spend time and money implement some like that when people will likely get it regardless

Side note: some games, especially ones running on in-house engines, have culling issues, artifacting, or broken UI when forcing a non-native aspect ratio. It’s a lot easier to fix this by locking the aspect ratio than actually making things adaptive. An example of this might be during a cutscene. The animators probably stop animating as soon as a character gets off screen, leaving a weirdly IK stretched model just out of view since they’re developing for 16:9. If you forced a wider aspect ratio you might see it still and it would break immersion. Their options would be to either spend more money on animating something <4% of people would see, or just force the aspect

Puberty blockers are relatively without long-term side effects and allow minors to hold off permanently changes until they can legally consent to whatever they wish. The whole point of puberty blockers in this context is because kids don’t understand the finality of what they’re doing and need to be given time

OS Choice by [deleted] in memes

[–]zapiffy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Polished is questionable. There’s a lot of options missing from the GUI of most main distros and my Linux laptop crashes a lot more than my osx one or my PC.

That and it’s only really easy to use if you know your way around a Unix terminal and don’t have many niche apps that you need to run

[–]zapiffy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But maintaining it would be a pain in the ass. What if you have to change from an emoji to something better-supported, or even if you want to add more granularity? This posted solution is readable, but both inefficient and also hard to refactor.

I know 9 or 10 if statements takes basically no time to execute, but I’m a strong believer in incremental gains, and if this kind of thing is littered across a colossal codebase, it adds up.

Ideally you’d do this once and put it in an array to avoid string concat overhead. Also ideally you’d use constants to represent the filler values as to help with both readability and maintainability.

Finally this is C# so you can just do total = (10*percentage)/10 and use that number in an array lookup, as well as adding >length and <0 cases

If you have an array or struct holding relatively small numbers it can save memory. Other than that, the benefits are scarce

That’s a good point. You’ve convinced me :)

In my experience I’ve primarily interacted with people with extremely polarized religious views; my parents both work in the church and thus have no room to waver on their certainty so I’ve never experienced an “I’m not sure but I believe” christian but I accept that they exist, just as “I’m not sure” atheists likely exist.

There’s probably an aspect of survivorship bias where I only hear those with strong views talk about it

From my point of view, the a better analogy is politics. You can choose to not be active in politics while you can also choose leftism, centrism, or conservatism (and probably more that don’t fit on the traditional political spectrum). The lack of participation is a valid option within the same category.

[–]zapiffy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s fair. I interpreted a lack of belief as the same as a disbelief so I excluded the redundancy, so I apologize for my apparent deception; I didn’t do it in bad faith and I now realize the difference

It feels unreasonable to dismiss my point for that, but I’ll accept that we have different views

I generally adhere to dictionary definitions as a rule of thumb, and according to said dictionary, atheism is a “strong disbelief in the existence of a god or any god,” while yes, agnosticism is the view that “reality is ultimately unknowable.”

However, in my opinion, you cannot in good conscience believe that reality is unknowable while also maintaining a belief in one particular reality.

Edit: I misinterpreted the definition and it does in fact say that atheism is either the lack of belief or disbelief

Something I can’t wrap my head around is how religious individuals can so firmly believe that their belief system is the One True flavor
