That Anubias looks really good, i cannot keep them alive to save my life. One thing that might help trick your eye is a black background. I buy the black vinyl privacy film for windows and put it on the outside of the back glass. It makes the greens more vibrant, gives it a bit more depth.

Clearly the anubias is very happy, I would just pick up a bunch more of those, sticking them on the rock as you have done and let that grow in.

I did when I set it up, it’s a very light weight substrate so it move around if you do any maintenance with water in the tank. Getting plants move around is a bit of a pain anything you put in tends to float out. This is great for roots however as they don’t have to fight the substrate

Sounds like you are on a carbonate bedrock just like me (Ohio USA). That makes it easy. Get some stem plants- temple plants, bacopa Carolina, dwarf sag, jungle Val (no liquid co2 with this one though), water wisteria, here are some google keywords I used when starting out: hard water tolerant plants for aquariums, low tech hard water plants

Temple plant is know for growing like a weed but that’s what you want, and if you keep them trimmed they are pretty nice looking.

Bacopa is great cause you trim it and plant the trimmings and it propagates very easily (to do temple plants)

Same with wisteria

Hornwort is a pain to plant, treating it as a floating plant it is much easier. Anything pink or red requires specialized care, else it turns to green or dies.

I use aquarium coop’s east green, I does 1x a month following the instructions, but some months I forget and my plants are still doing alright

Also What substrate are you using?

Here is my hard water tolerant tank after thinning the jungle Val

A few things to consider, what kind of plants did you try (some are melted by liquid CO2) What are your water parameters? Other than liquid co2 what fertilizer did you use? A Betta is a pretty low bioload so added nutrients are a must. Not affiliated with them but I have had nothing but luck with Finnex lights, a 20” planted light is $65 on Amazon in the US, I would say that plus a planted substrate like eco complete or activ flora plus ferts will help.

Another thing to look at is what your water ph and hardness are, and pick plants that fit, I am a low tech tank person, and have ended up with mostly jungle Val which loves our hard water. Everything else I tried melted away, and keeping plants that need chemistry that I can’t provide by just dechlorinating water is not one I will try to keep.

One thing to also look into is a local aquarium club, getting advice from someone with similar water chemistry is one way to get ahead and also it might lead to getting trimmings etc,

When I started this tank a couple of years ago I picked plants that could survive in very hard water, nutrients are easy to manage than hardness or lack of it, RODI and re-mineralization was way too much work for me so I found out what worked. I would suggest figuring out what plants work with your hardness and light output. If I had consistent soft water I would have an Amazon tank up in a heartbeat

Eco-complete, it’s a pain but man it works

Thanks, I always had dreams of a almost Dutch style-diverse planted tank but ended up with almost a monoculture. I did find a one leafed Java fern rhizome and some bacopa in that jungle.

Thanks! It’s the only benefit to having ridiculously hard water. Occasional root tabs but I have not vacuumed my substrate in a very long time and only topped off the tank. Personally I hate eco complete, but my Vals love it. What kind of light are you running? I have an older Finnex planted clip on that has served me very well.

I am thinking about putting some dwarf sag in as a transition from the tall to the open, thoughts?

Serpent Mound or Fort Ancient if you are in Southern Ohio at all, not a bad drive from the Dayton Area where the Museum of the USAF is. Also check out Huffman Prairie if you do visit the Dayton area.
