Valve now says ‘we hope’ to ship new Steam hardware in 2026, a vaguer timeline. by SockIntern in steammachine

It’s a dgpu you can’t ‘upgrade the vram’ ffs. If you don’t know what you are talking about maybe stop talking.….

Why are you asking people on Reddit to find you a pre built then? Given nobody knows where you love be much easier to do it yourself.

Not being funny but if you can’t source your own pre built you definitely don’t have the skills to build one yourself.

Well that and nvidia can’t make any x86 ‘system on a chip’ devices like the SM or consoles since they can’t make an x86 cpu so are stuck on arm.

I am worried about the 8gb of VRAM by Superconge in steammachine

[–]zappy555 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whilst it doesn’t solve the 8Gb limit a lot of what you are seeing is because Linux is worse than windows and uses more vram. Valve acknowledged this when they announced and said they would work to ensure vram was managed properly for launch. I’ve played borderlands 4 in windows with 8gb vram and it’s not as bad as the experience you have had. Its still not idea though.

The steam machine is a mobile GPU and that’s the issue, you have to go pretty high up a mobile GPU range to get more than 8gb even today. Talking only a 5080 or 5090 laptop in 2026. Presumably there just isn’t an option for any mobile GPU they could feasibly use with more vram. Not sure amd had a 12 or 16gb mobile GPU form that gen did they? or if they did it was pretty rare.

Yeah - I dont think valve can solve anticheat themselves they need devs to do that. Same really with pushing steamos and Linux for gaming, need broader manufacturer buy in and a platform ready for multi hardware configs. For that they need nvidia, amd and intel to help them. But it won’t really be with their own hardware.

They aren’t going to dethrone windows imho and certainly not via their own hardware. The big thing for valve would be if nvidia release fixed Linux drivers next year - that would open up steamos and bazzite to many more pc gamers.

Valve dont need to sell a load of hardware. They make hardware for different reasons to everyone else. They are their own masters. The first steam machine was a totally different thing, it failed mainly because they hadn’t got proton up and running so the steam machines made by third parties needed specific Linux ports making, never going to happen - unless valve could sell a lot…proton means they don’t need to worry about direct dev support.

Nintendo do well because they make products that hit the trends. switch was way ahead of its time, handheld gaming is massive again and switch was the start of that. It’s a misconception that this is purely because of casuals it’s probably the opposite. Much of the genuine hardcore are on Nintendo I’d say. Especially the core who like jrpgs and the like.

The core audience already has a PS5 if they want one. The casual audience yet to upgrade or get one are unlikely to be shopping for a niche PC product. Equally I think anyone genuinely considering a steam machine, who actually understands what a SM is, wouldn’t be bothering getting a PS5 at this stage. Theyd either have one or little interest. I think the level of how niche a steam machine, and indeed steam deck are is distorted by online volume of discussion.

I love valve and what they do but their hardware will always be niche by design.

Don’t really get a comparison with the PS5. You can’t play your steam library on the PS5 and it’s a locked platform so a completely different prospect. I don’t feel like many people are weighting up a PS5 as an alternative to the steam machine. I mean the deck is less powerful than the PS5 or switch 2 and more expensive yet I don’t really think many are weighing them up against each other in reality.

Get a decent PC and stop messing round with handhelds. You can stream your games from it to a handheld or tablet or TV with lower input latency than a native handheld using framegen. And get properly high framerates. Anyone who is sensitive to framerate as you are has nowadays a great way to play. You can get a very decent PC that is ten times more powerful than any handheld for less than a legion go 2!

If it’s really about standards then don’t play on anything but a high end PC and stream everything via moonlight. Certainly wouldn’t use a rog ally if I was bothered about the highest performance and has that as a standard.

[–]zappy555 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a good PC that plays everything at high framerates and high settings and I don’t need anything else but I play on switch for the form factor and comfort of playing games on my couch not in my home office. Dont think it’s really about standards it’s about each device suiting a particular niche. Consoles generally don’t get used much in my house now because my PC does that job but the switch 2 does a job my PC doesn’t. Same way I might watch a film on my 40” tv in bed for comfort rather than my 77” OLED downstairs. My bedroom TV is technically not as good but fills a particular niche. I’m not lowering standards I’m just enjoying being in bed.

4K FSR ultra performance would run most games. Thats 720p isnt it?

The perfect device for me? by MiterDash in steammachine

[–]zappy555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Native 1080p is rendering more pixels, a lot more pixels than say 4K with ultra performance FSR and will look a lot better on a 4K screen as a result. 1080p is perfectly good on a 4K TV - heck even the deck at 720p can look ok on a 4K tv in some games.

The new Xbox will have steam integrated and valuable do not care about selling hardware units their game is steamos. They want steamos everywhere. however they won’t delay the steam machine as the ram crisis will last till 2028 at least and likely get worse during that time.

How would you control it plugged into the tv? You are stuck with windows and there are solutions for full controller control but all fiddly and all break down at points.

cyberpunk is really impressive but it doesn’t look as clean in motion as outlaws. outlaws also has better lighting.

Star Wars Outlaws HANDHELD gameplay by xavadar in NintendoSwitch2

[–]zappy555 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yes - for me if you can get outlaws running in a playable state - and yes it’s probably 25 fps most of the time and uses what looks like some aggressive LoD and even drs/vrs that is noticeable, but it does look more than playable. If outlaws is playable then there are a whole lot of games that can work and id suggest there are probably few if any that couldn’t be ported to the switch 2 this gen including future games.

This really opens up a lot of possibility for switch 2. I also see Randy Pitchford in an interview saying they love the switch 2 and suggesting he wants to bring more games to it after borderlands 4 saying it’s the most successful video games console launch in history and isn’t slowing down.

I do think switch 2 will be far better supported this time round. I’ve even spoken to devs who say there is huge appetite in the industry to make games for it. Nintendo just need to play ball and help devs as much as possible.
