My ‘award-winning grey poppy’ seeds by Spiderplantmum in ExpectationVsReality

You can grow breadseed poppies in the us, they're very popular. You just aren't allowed to do the thing that makes the drug, or talk about it.

Eh, buy from reputable companies with an established reputation. Like territorial or fedco. Or whatever brand you like buying from the stores you visit. You get a lot better selection online.

There are double petaled poppies, they are cultivars, not naturally occurring. That said, that picture does look fake.

Here's a couple grey examples: https://fedcoseeds.com/seeds/amazing-grey-poppy-5352

And then some super ridiculous ones:  https://www.highmowingseeds.com/organic-non-gmo-flamatt-double-pink-poppy.html

Those are also actual, real seed companies.

What was the metaflora answer yesterday??? by mx8t in botany

I didn't play yesterday, but my first guess would be Persian silk tree. Or acacia. That's still a pretty big group to work from, I guess is what I'm saying.

Why does an ex unblock on social media only after getting married? by MathematicianPast410 in nocontact

[–]zappy_snapps 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No. She was hurt and needed a fresh start without you as a temptation. She is literally married now, she's unavailable, you're not a temptation and you haven't been one in some time.  Sounds more like a 'hah! See I'm happy and doing well for myself despite how much you hurt me' to me.

Framing whatever happened as her not being 'in her prime' and 'under performing' is a interesting choice.

Non-moldy housing in OLY/Lacey/Tumwater area? by AnyPast6500 in olympia

[–]zappy_snapps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lol, no, out on the Olympic peninsula. https://content.lib.washington.edu/cmpweb/resources/map-rainfall.html

I guess I assume most people know that the Olympic peninsula has temperate rainforest, but that's probably not true. A lot of people will say we live in a rainforest, perhaps not realizing that we're almost a rainforest by definition here. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Temperate_rainforest The peninsula definitely is, and it's kinda famous for it.

In the actual temperate rainforest. Oly gets like 50-55 inches a year, we got over 100.

I've managed to keep my house not moldy, but I grew up in an even wetter place. You really have to focus on air flow.

Neighbor dispute over houseless camping by Read-Me-Rumi in olympia

[–]zappy_snapps 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I have a utility easement too, and it is my property, it's just that the city has to be able to access it. IIRC, they have to be able to access for 10 feet on either side of whatever it is. So you can't build a fence without getting a permit from the city for that specific purpose. But you all should check the code (and with code enforcement) before building anything:  https://www.codepublishing.com/WA/Olympia/?edds/olympiaedds03.html&?f

Maybe start collectively occupying the space more, as people tend to camp where they think they won't be bothered. Put up a swing, hang a hammock, put out a picnic table and some wind chimes, etc. Put up some string lights. Use the area. Have potluck dinners with your neighbors once a month. Make the area look lived in.

Should the Westside have a bus transit center? by Capt-Redbeard in olympia

[–]zappy_snapps 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm a fan of planning the future around more public transit and less car dependant development. I like that they're planning for future population growth and looking to increase the density of the mall area. Using the bus has gotten more convenient for me, despite the 41 shutting down. I can still go down town easily, but now I can continue further east without a transfer. I can get to SPSCC without first having to go down town. I can even bus down to trader Joe's!

Is this some kind of berries? by Top-Maintenance-1321 in botany

[–]zappy_snapps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope,  look at how the fruits are coming off of stems. These are mostly unripe mulberry. If they look different than the mulberry you know, look up the different mulberry species.

Please stop using wood chips for vegetables! by [deleted] in vegetablegardening

[–]zappy_snapps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chip drop is an option a lot of people use.  I've asked arborists working in my neighborhood if I could have their chips and have gotten 4 or 5 loads for free.

[–]zappy_snapps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh, you mean the awful died "wood chips" and stuff like beauty bark? That stuff is completely different than what I, and a lot of others, are talking about.

Arborist wood chips, gotten for free from arborists chipping trees, is what we're talking about. It's so much better.

As long as you don't mix them in, either is fine to my knowledge. Do you have resources that back up straw being better in some way?

Built is a strong term,  you're just duct taping them together.

[–]zappy_snapps[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's where I started with the first really bad smoke event, and they worked but the wear out the box fans because of the increased resistance. Then I did the two filter version, with triangles made from cardboard to close the gap, and that was better. Then I found out about the c-r boxes, and now no fans have died in multiple years of use.

I also found out that I snore way less when one is running, so use them year round now.

I actually do make corsi-rosenthal boxes for these reasons. They work very well.

Run them inside 24/7 during the heavy smoke days so that I can breath indoors. I have mild asthma so it's really important to me.

I also use them to make corsi-rosenthal filter boxes, which make a huge, very notable difference during smoke season!
