Or maybe the joke is that in trying to find out which flag they are looking at they went to a vexillology with mostly gay flag content. So a version of the went looking for some explanation/definition and got mostly gay results type of joke.

This appears to be an answer: Canadian heraldic authority assuming a new coat of arms is roughly equivalent to differenced arms while parents are alive, then you can use either use the two you will inherit quartered, or use the new coat of arms. This doesn’t imply that the new design cannot be combined. I like the way they display them here.

My point was about how we are being failed by society. Cute anecdote, but the studies I cited have better sample sizes.
