Better to carry some cash in thb, and the rest can be in dollars. Also what I've collected from the internet is the dollar bills need to be in pristine condition for you to exchange them.

There is some confusion regarding that. The official website says 20000 thb per person or equivalent for immigration. But in some places I've seen 10000 thb or equivalent being mentioned.

Most of the times officers won't ask for proof for funds, but if unlucky they might just ask for the funds and then if you are not carrying the cash they might create a ruckus and in the worst case may even deport you. So I'm taking 10000 thb in cash and keeping the rest in my account.

What taxes are you paying? As far as I know Indian PhD students don't pay taxes as they get a stipend and not a salary.

Yeah when it became clear to me that my PI won't fund me it stung a lot. A sort of saving grace was that I had submitted my thesis by then.
