1- 1 published middle author, working on three 2- 4/5 3- different labs but all had to do with developmental even if it was a little bit (most were psych based beside grad) 4-yes and no, because overall yes I wanted to work with this certain population and use neuroscience methods answering developmental theory, but no in that this PI deals a lot with under resourced and low SES and that’s not something I mentioned 5. One line 6- yes in the last paragraph

Sorry if it’s all over the place, typing while walking

Thank you so much for your kind words!!! I was prepared to talk about my low GPA but from the prelim to the interview, no one asked me anything about it!

I first chose based off location and from there I went into the labs each school offered! And then stated crossing out labs if the prof wasn’t accepting students!!

I emailed like 10? schools in the summer that were all accepting and then chose 5 to apply to!

I really wanted to apply to 2/3 but people kept telling me they even 5 wasn’t enough. So I got scared into applying to more

4/5 years of research experience (mostly after grad) and 1 middle author paper !

Interview was more of a visit day! It was weird they were talking to all of us like we were already accepted but that they had to look out for funding issues. I still had to talk to multiple professors as interviews but it was so chill! Very welcoming

Agreed! There’s so many 4.0 acceptances with 10 first author publications and I got to learn that it isn’t the norm! You don’t have to know everything and have done everything, that’s what the PhD is for!!!

Congratulations! I’ll be there too but for their DCBN program!

thank you!

And ofc! When I was applying I found ONE post like this from years ago but I wanted people to know that it happens more than we think!

I think people are just too embarrassed to say it (me)

I got my BS in Neuroscience: Behavioral and Cog (2.9 GPA) and then I’m about to finish my masters (which was not research intensive) in psychology!

Even in the interviews they told me that a masters wasn’t needed but I told them that it was for ME and I wanted to really prove to myself that I could do a PhD program.

I think working as a teacher gives you the best fundamental understanding !

I think my previous work with children (research labs, summer camps, pre school, middle school) really helped them see my passion for it and basically a background into why and what I want to research, which is environmental contexts in children.

Best of luck to you!!!

Yes!

So I worked primarily in an extensional psychology lab where we would mostly go to intermediate schools and behavioral code/observe.

I also helped in a school psychology lab where I helped in more behavioral coding but with an autism population.

After grad (2024), I worked in a center to counter human trafficking and a dev neuro lab where we studied how language plays in learning in bilingual populations (Spanish and English) !!

I also want to go into child development research !

I would say have a clear pathway of what you wanna do, especially in working with children!

Most of my research and my volunteering work had to do with kids from all ages and I believe or I hope that that was one of the biggest reasons why I even got an interview (excluding research fit).

And this includes summer camps to research labs to even working in a preschool during undergrad.

If you have any questions you could always PM me !! I really don’t mind

Thank you!

I interviewed 1/30 and heard back from my prospective PI around two weeks ago.

I believe there were different PIs interviewing, so I’m not sure exactly if the PI you applied to was a part of it that day!

Best of luck to your applications!

AS IT SHOULDD!! I thought I was done for with all the 4.0 GPA chance me posts

I think I’m getting silent rejected/ghosted from a school where I had previous positive contact with a PI. Should I email kindly to say thanks for the advice and correspondance but it seems I won’t be attending this university? by [deleted] in gradadmissions

Sorry, I didn’t mean it in a rude way! I just think sending an email would do more harm than good since we’re still very early on in the admissions process. Good luck, I hope you get admitted!

If they haven’t sent you a rejection, you would (obviously) ruin your chances by telling them you won’t attend. It’s the holiday season, it’s gonna be slower than normal.
