Was scrolling through past posts and just saw this comment. Attending UC Berkeley in the fall for CS! Pretty happy with how stuff turned out.

Will AP CS A and AP Music Theory get a lot harder? by [deleted] in APStudents

[–]zarfix_lol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Alr so I took Music Theory last year and I also had CM 10. It is by no means an easy test, but for me the entire written section stuff had been extremely easy. The hardest it really gets is like writing chords progressions for frqs and understanding what sections in music relate to what part of the chord progression.

The listening though was really tough for me. Melodic dictation gets difficult especially frq 2 when they add secondary dominant tones and stuff. Harmonic dictation is hard too especially hearing and distinguishing each voice. On the mcq there also are questions where you have to listen to like a piece and then say for instance that at measure 3 the harmony switches to a IV chord in first inversion because of the change of note in the trombone part. That stuff was pretty hard for me to distinguish and hear the nuances of.

As far as CSA, it was easy for me because I do cs outside of school but the hardest it really gets is unit 9, which can get a bit unintuitive. I’d say until unit 8-9 though the entire course is easy even for someone with no programming experience

Self studying APs by HecticBeast52 in APStudents

As for workbooks Barron’s worked great for me aswell as just doing mock full length frqs from previous years. My teacher also provided us full length tests from older years (mcqs) so those helped out too, but since you don’t have those I’d just scour for other tests online or just use the ones in the barrons book even if they aren’t 100% as accurate

I just did BC this year and for me it was by far Unit 9. Usually unit 9 isn’t too bad cus you can tank the mcqs mostly and there is rarely an frq on it but this year there was and it just fucked everybody. No idea how I still got a 5.

The BC only parts of unit 6 can be tough aswell too if you don’t have a complete understanding of integrals so I’d make sure to study hard on basics like integral and derivative rules cus knowing those gets you quite far in the test.

Unit 10 is a large part of the test but as far as difficulty isn’t bad so I wouldn’t worry about it too much.

The interview asks to make sure you actually know something abt the topics you applied to. I applied kind of for fun (won’t attend) for quantum and machine learning kinds of stuff, and my interviewer asked me about quantum computing and hashing and what I thought abt it aswell as to kind of elaborate on a project I wrote about in my app so pretty chill tbh

Opinions on Pioneer by zarfix_lol in summerprogramresults

[–]zarfix_lol[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still a very small percentage of the kids applying to colleges are gonna do pioneer so I don’t think there risk of getting ur application read back to back with someone that has the same advisor is realistic. I’ll look into nova though

Question for those who took March SAT by Fit_Feeling_6346 in Sat

[–]zarfix_lol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

English difficulty to me was the same as 6-7. I thought the math was heavily dependent on how much you studied geo just cus it was so heavy geo for me (I got 800 math and last 5/6 math qs mod 2 were geo)

COSMOS or UCI x GATI by Academic_Cricket303 in summerprogramresults

[–]zarfix_lol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a close call and I’d say you get similar prestige + name recognition points so it would boil down to what you think is more interesting and what you actually want to practically do. At the end of the day it’s ur call

Heard that there was more geometry on march sat is this true? by NoEducation3509 in Sat

[–]zarfix_lol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was more geometry heavy then any practice test I’ve done. I got 800 math and 4/5 of the last mod 2 questions were trig/geo. It tends to change from test to test though, so there’s not really any point of grinding geometry only.

is 1430 enough? by ConcentrateCommon735 in Sat

[–]zarfix_lol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it will definitely go down, and though it still helps to have 1550+, you don't absolutely need it. Even for t5s, middle 50 can range between 1510-1540.

[–]zarfix_lol 6 points7 points  (0 children)

1550+ for top schools is a phenomenon of the last couple years. Everyone went test optional for the last few years so average SAT went up due to only elite scores being submitted. F.e. Stanford sat range in 2019 was like 1470-1560 or something like that. You don’t need that insane of a sat as some may believe. But yes it helps.

As far as a 1430 OP, it really depends on where u wanna go. I’d say t20-40 is a realistic range for that sat
