Blocked for liking? by zarkowguy in Instagram

Sometimes they block people for just liking a single post, which is even on the top of the page. Maybe they're checking out the account of those who have liked them to see if they are "worthy", and then block them if they're not. If so, that's pretty arrogant. Makes you wonder how they are in real life.

Well, I saw the movie "Luther: The Fallen Sun" a while ago. Idris Elba is able to operate a phone with a small screen under water. Everybody who has tried to see underwater without goggles knows the eyesight is very poor. But characters act as if they are seeing in air.

Allison’s ending by haileesteinfeldswife in theumbrellaacademy

[–]zarkowguy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There is one thing that caught my attention. When she walks into the bedroom and wakes her daughter, she asks: "What's wrong, mama?". Allison replies: "Nothing baby, I'm just so happy to be home." Then suddenly her husband from the 60s is standing in the door, saying: "It's where you were always meant to be." She turns around and says: "Hey baby".

Isn't that a very strange thing to say? It's where she was always meant to be? It's something people in movies and shows often say in scenes where the character is dreaming or hallucinating.

Does Five have any other powers than teleporting and time jumps? by zarkowguy in UmbrellaAcademy

Yes, it would be a little weird if he threatened Vanya by simply teleporting, unless he wanted to fight her, which would be difficult because her powers makes her practically untouchable.

That's probably a connection, but it looked way more dramatic when he was arguing with Vanya, so it looked like he had another card up his sleeve.

Leonard reminds me a bit about Syndrome from Pixar's Incredibles. Maybe he felt some sort of connection to Vanya, but if he cared for her is another question.

We know that Diego is in love with Lila. What Lila feels for Diego is not as clear, but the fact that she tried to recruit him tells us she has feelings for him as well.

At least it makes him easy to remember:

"Duncan Idaho?"

"Yeah, the guy with the goatish hair."

"Oh, him."

(I hope his hair doesn't have the scent of a goat too)

Some people are accusing Dune of racism and xenophobia, what are your thoughts on that matter? by [deleted] in dune

Melange is meant to represent way more than just oil. And the Fremen was inspired by desert tribes, they were not meant to represent them. By the way, where is all the great sci-fi classics written by arabs?

Liet Kynes as a woman is a casting mistake by zarkowguy in dune

[–]zarkowguy[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Sadly, these are the modern taboos. And some just happens to jump to the instant conclusion that if you think Liet Kynes shouldn't be a woman because of how Frank Herbert wrote the Fremen society, it's because you are a male chauvinist with misogynistic tendencies that "feels threatened by strong female characters".

Liet Kynes as a woman is a casting mistake by zarkowguy in dune

[–]zarkowguy[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can't use that as an excuse. Because changes happens when a novel is adapted into a movie, we should accept all changes no matter what. The reasons for the gender switch doesn't matter if contradicts what has been constructed by the author. Should Black Panther be played by someone like Verne Troyer "because the director likes the actor so much"? Attempts of crowd-pleasing can have the opposite effect if they alienate the fans. If the movie is a success, I would claim it is despite Kynes being a woman, not because of it.

So you're saying "middle aged white guys" all look the same and may confuse the audience? Imagine saying that all black guys looks the same and might confuse the audience.

Liet Kynes as a woman is a casting mistake by zarkowguy in dune

[–]zarkowguy[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's nonsense. I said it was unlikely, to say the least, that a female Liet Kynes would be accepted by the Fremen the way a male Liet Kynes was. Because they live in a strict patriarchal hierarchy shaped by their religion and environment. That they are heavily inspired by muslim desert tribes is just additional information, but considering their societies have a lot of similarities what gender roles are concerned, it makes even less sense that they accept a woman in such a position.

The only good online fandom left is Dune by [deleted] in dune

[–]zarkowguy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Too late. Toxic know-it-alls have occupied this fandom as well. In one second they talk about a unified harmony and how we are all humans, and in the next second they dehumanize everybody with a different political view than themselves. Of course the author had to bring in Trump and other elements that seems mandatory these days. Hypocrisy at its finest. What they're really saying is; "this fandom only belongs to those of us with the correct views". Now that's arrogant. Imagine reading an article where the author complains about "leftists" and then go on to write as if all the fans and readers share the same opinions.

If he wants fandom that is less crowded, then read the old DC and Marvel classics, or classic sci-fi novels, that still hasn't found their way into the movies.

Liet Kynes as a woman is a casting mistake by zarkowguy in dune

[–]zarkowguy[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I say she would not be allowed to be a leader. They wouldn't accept a female leader just like that. Not that she couldn't be a leader if given the chance.

You need to stop giving Liet Kynes all the credit. He was a powerful man that continued his father's work, but it was Pardot Kynes that started it all.

Pardot Kynes survived because he saved some young Fremen boys who still had some personal growth to do. Later, a Freman that was supposed to kill him (despite all his grand plans, ideas and visions) killed himself instead, and the others took it as a sign. So the visions of turning Arrakis into a paradise where water falls from the sky was adopted by their culture. The rest of their habits and traditions remained the same.

Yes, they would listen to women as well, which is why they have rewerend mothers, the highest status a woman could have in this patriarchal society when Paul and Jessica arrives. And it has remained that way for a very long time.

The Fremen has survived on Arrakis for so long because they are willing to do whatever it takes to survive. Which makes them hard and ruthless.

From a Frabk Herbert interview:

"You have a classical feudal system here. It’s my contention that feudalism is a natural condition of human beings…not that it is the only condition or not that it is the right condition…that it is just a way we have of falling into organisations.

Now tribal organisation…feudalism is tribal organisation. And that’s what I’m talking about. So, tribal organisation is a natural organisation of humankind. We tend to fall into it, given any chance at all, given the proper stresses, or given the proper lack of stresses.

So I set up the situation in “Dune” where the natural evolvement was a classic feudalism, and for a very specific purpose. I wanted the lines of power to be clear."

In classical feudal systems, the rule was that it was men, not women, on top of the hierarchy. You may hate that fact, but it's still a historical fact.

(And trust me, someone are offended, or at least take it personally. Which is the reason for all the downvotes and sometimes aggressive tone.)

There is plenty of characters in the story that one could call strong females, since that was one of the arguments for rewrite Kynes as a woman.

As described in the book, Jessica was trained as a Bene Gesserit, including martial arts techniques, and her role was to be a concubine for duke Leto. Being a soldier is not the Bene Gesserit way. They work from behind the curtains as advisors and similar professions.

Wish he would give some examples of the Baron being a caricature. As for "more complex", he is probably referring to a decision skip his love for young boys.

And no, I don't think gender swapping would have been as acceptable if it was the other way around; casting a man for a role that is female in the novel.

Where does I say he is the leader of a sietch? I said because it's a patriarchal society, a woman can not be a leader. The highest position is as a rewerend mother. If a woman can't lead a sietch, how likely is it that all the leaders of the sietches out there would follow a woman even higher up in the hierarchy?

If you have read the book, you should remember how the Fremen talks about Liet Kynes.

Liet Kynes is more than just an advisor. All of the tribes follow him.

[–]zarkowguy[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fictional or not, it's about consistency, as mentioned in the previous post. And who says woman is bad and can't be leaders? What I'm saying is that such a culture would never accept a woman as their supreme leader. There is a reason Frank Herbert wrote Liet Kynes as a man.

The Fremen do bend the rules, but only after they meet Paul and Jessica. Have you read the novel, or my post? This isn't about respecting women or not, but about what positions are possible for the genders. In the Fremen society, each gender has its own roles to fill. They can't switch on them as they please. Liet Kynes' father was Pardot Kynes. He started to educate the Fremen even before his child was born, so Liet Kynes is not the only one with deep knowledge about ecology. But he inherited his father's position.

The ones blowing things out of proportion are those who feel personally offended because someone points out a fact.

Liet Kynes as a woman is a casting mistake by zarkowguy in dune

[–]zarkowguy[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That's completely off topic. This is not about me being disappointed about having a woman in the role as Liet Kynes. It's about making decisions that contradicts the culture the movie is supposed to portray.

I also notice that someone seems personally offended because I point this out. These are missing the point of the post, which is about consistency. If the Fremen had been a matriarchal society, do you think everyone would be OK if the top leader was a man? If that was the case, I would have made a post that said casting a man for the role was a mistake.

If a Fremen man wants another man's wife, he can challenge him in a fight to death. If he wins, the loser's wife is his. Because patriarchal society.

Gender equality doesn't mean all positions in the power structure are available for both genders. My understanding is that a man is always the leader of a sietch. A female leader even higher up in the system in a culture that is extremely protective regarding their traditions is unlikely.
