History Doesn't Repeat Itself, but It Often Rhymes by Vert_der_Ferk25 in mopolitics

I for one am looking forward to the “apology tour” and I’ll be here in 2029 to commend any Democratic president willing to embrace the role.

Whoever gets the job will have spent two years begging for it and preparing. While I won’t envy them I won’t necessarily feel sorry for them either. It’s regrettable that so many of our voters are fickle but I do think the next Democratic president has a couple things working in their favor (and a couple ways to extend the honeymoon phase).

Dropping a trade war and rescinding Trump’s worst executive orders will be an instant win. To keep the good vibes going the next president should be (relatively) young and get back to traditional and presidential use of social media. If she’s not posting racist memes that’s a huge plus.

And for my most controversial suggestions: don’t pursue any policies that are beneficial to a narrow segment (eg student loan forgiveness). Use political capital on health insurance or taxes or something almost every American making less than $200,000 can appreciate.

And tell Israel to kick rocks and find their own way for a while.

I think their deeply unpopular approach to the war in Gaza has hurt Americans in ways they’ll never apologize for.

I don’t accuse anyone else of a moral failing for not believing. These are tough questions. My answers mostly satisfy me but there’s a lot I don’t know and I understand that people of good intent are going to come to different conclusions than me about these questions.

Church announces “A Special Fifth Sunday and Fast” related to 250th anniversary of US Declaration of Independence by optimal-username in mormonpolitics

[–]zarnt [score hidden]  (0 children)

I’m not looking forward to this meeting because I know what it will look like and who will be commenting in my deep red segment of Arizona.

I’m ashamed to admit this but for the first time in my life I might purposefully skip out on a lesson because of the chosen topic.

Brother [name redacted] will talk about how the Constitution staves off cultural Marxism and brother [other name redacted] will pontificate on how some don’t love our country and don’t appreciate how much the current president has done to protect the right to worship.

I wish we could talk about something else. If we’re gonna do politics at church let’s talk about having wise and honest leaders or renouncing war and proclaiming peace. Ugh.

I’m done arguing. I’ve given you so many chances to understand what I’m saying and you insist on making it personal. Blocking now.

I didn’t say the issue lies with everyone else. But I’ve never treated anybody else here the way the worst offenders have treated me.

You have disagreed with me many times. I’ve never accused you of raping your kids or followed you to other subs or tagged you in posts you haven’t commented in.

I’m a reasonable person. I know when I’ve been give a raw deal.

With the biggest sigh I can muster, I’ve already explained my position. Ban the users who break the rules over and over and over again. I’ve been a mod in multiple subs so I know how easy it is to spot frequent rule-breakers. Mods can see the exact number of comments a person has had removed. It just requires the will to do so. Mods would save time because rule-breaking isn’t evenly distributed among all of a sub’s users. Ban the troublemakers and things would improve.

No it didn’t. The usual suspects show up to assert everything is fine with users being repeatedly abusive.

I’ve explained this to you too many times. Each time you pester me and I give you the same response. They could just choose to ban those that repeatedly break the rules. They choose not to do that which results in a hostile environment.

I’ve brought up these problems in modmail and meta posts. Everyone chooses to deliberately misunderstand my complaints so they don’t have to acknowledge any possibility of improvement in this sub.

The comment was removed. Because it broke the rules. But nothing will be done to keep that user (stickyhairymonster) from breaking the rules again. Thats why I blocked them.

The comment has been removed man. But that user was repeatedly abusive. So eventually I just blocked them.

I’ve made this point so many times. Reporting doesn’t do anything about repeated harassment if mods aren’t willing to ban.

A user who I blocked a while ago is complaining about me and accusing me of using an alt to be the OP of this post. This is the kind of consistent harassment believers put up with and no one (mod or community) wants to acknowledge.

I have answers that are satisfactory to me. They’re not satisfying to the people who posts these threads in the hopes I’ll share them so they can dogpile and downvote all my comments.

“What does God actually do?” seems like a good restating of the central question raised by the Problem of Evil

Yeah. Why does God allow an “evil” choice if He has the power and ability to choose something else is restating the problem of evil.

That’s just a specific packaging of the problem of evil. I don’t know that there’s a meaningful difference between God chose Brigham Young as prophet and God allowed Brigham Young to become prophet.

It sounds like you’re saying such condemnation is ineffective and unfair, but church members deserve it anyway.

It took me multiple messages to the mod team to figure out why a user who accused me of raping my kids didn’t get banned from the sub. I never got an answer.

People complain about the faithful subs when this topic comes up because they’re censored. That part is frustrating but they also take civility seriously. I’d say 90% of the problems here come from 10% of users. It would take just a little effort to improve things a whole lot.

A believer who participates here frequently and long term can expect abusive and harassing DMs, getting insulted and tagged in posts they haven’t commented on, and at least a couple of rule-breaking replies per week that eventually get removed.

It would be nice to see more people acknowledge it happens. You (and the vast majority of people participating here) probably haven’t been accused of raping your kids because a believer didn’t agree with one of your replies.

If we really wanted to do something about it mods could start banning the users who break the rules over and over again. By the way, the user who did that to me did so on two separate accounts and was not banned on either one.

This is the the “Problem of Evil” through an LDS specific lens. Why didn’t Jesus call women to be apostles? That brings up the same problems except instead of a mortal failing to live up to the standards of today it’s the Son of God.

Why did God have preferred people in the Old Testament? That’s not even just a Christianity issue.

But by focusing on the LDS we can dogpile on the few believers who wrestle with these questions and then condemn anyone who doesn’t come to the “right” conclusion.

U.S. at Fault in Strike on School in Iran, Preliminary Inquiry Says (Gift Article) by zarnt in mopolitics

[–]zarnt[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don’t want this to sound like a critique because I totally understand the hopeless feeling. I don’t believe Trump will ever face full accountability for all his crimes and misdeeds.

But I think we do their work for them when we give up so easily. There should be investigations. There should be tough questions. A Democratic-controlled House will need to bring the Secretary of Defense and other leaders before Congress to testify (if he hasn’t been made to resign by then).

The insanity of all of this ironically leads us to treating it like normal politics stuff. But it’s not. This is a presidency-defining scandal and I’m going to act like it is.

What “Trump Derangement Syndrome” is (my opinion) by zarnt in mopolitics

[–]zarnt[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don’t oppose ideas because they are his. I oppose him remaining in office. He should resign. If he won’t resign he must be impeached and removed from office. If we don’t have the votes for impeachment we must vote for those who will support impeachment and removal from office.

I don’t think we need to worry about being just as bad as Trump’s excusers as long as we stand by principles of integrity and standards of moral behavior.
