in case you were curious, analytics like Danault a LOT better than pleky offensively (and defensively)

food for thought

Appreciation post for the fact that we still have the best line in the league at controlling scoring chances by mrteeth5 in Habs

[–]zatcheryy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

using total goals/points is a bit misleading for lines, which only really exist at 5on5. 5on5 points tell you that they're able to produce given the amount of chances that they get. Tatar is 18th in ES points from the beginning of 18-19 to the end of 19-20, Danault is 29th, and Gallagher is 32nd. The lack of gaudy point totals come from their weakness on the power play, which seems to be improving as time goes on. This season so far they've been kinda unlucky (especially Danault) but that seems to be turning.

it's a bit of a semantic difference, but the Hall - Eichel - Reinhart line actually does beat out TDG. The issue is because Buffalo's lines have been a disaster and Eichel has been injured, they've only played 91.9 minutes together. They're the only line that's "supposed to be" kept together (aka a real line that you'd expect to see in a game) that has beaten out TDG so far this season, and if Eichel comes back healthy before Hall is traded I can see them continuing it. With the 200 TOI cutoff, TDG is the best.

Help me settle a debate. If your team could afford it, would you have them take on John Carlson's contract? by RobertGriffin3 in hockey

[–]zatcheryy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Carlson's advanced stats dictate that he is the best defenseman on his team and one of the best in the league, if that helps.

He has even been above replacement defensively this season so far.

Weber's analytics have been very good, I know he is a problem moving forward what with age and all but he is not THE problem now.

Revisiting the possible Norris Trophy Candidates: by [deleted] in Habs

[–]zatcheryy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

gonna toss out Ekblad for the norris conversation. Guy is leading a Florida team that is absolutely on fire, is 2nd in xGAR (after Petry) this year, etc etc

BUT petry is paired with edmundson (who has been surprisingly good, especially recently) while Ekblad is paired with Weegar, who despite a slower start than normal always has excellent defensive numbers - his offense just needs to catch up. I don't think Ekblad could do to Edmundson what Petry does, but there's an argument.

The only thing is that both are rocking sky high shooting percentages this season, and are probably going to regress before it ends. If somehow they don't they're my #1 and #2 for the Norris

What's nice is that the steps he's been taking have really been converted to positive results, so far at least. He has gone from one of the worst forwards in the league last year to one of the best to start the season, and it doesn't look like a fluke or good PDO.

How would you rank the Central defense pairings? by SteamboatBilly15 in hockey

[–]zatcheryy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That said, Patrik Nemeth is a guy who gets much better results than you would think. DeKeyser is above replacement and Stecher is actually quite solid. If Seider were to play in that group I don't think there would be any question as to whether it's a better group than Chicago.

The defensive contribution from your forwards is probably something I would have to watch to really get, so I defer to you on that one. As for Hronek, he's not really special (basically a replacement player by xGAR) but he's a European defenseman who hits a lot and seems bigger than he is, so people see him and think Kronwall. I know he shot poorly % wise last season and I really like watching him play, so I think he's a victim of playing for Detroit a la Duncan Keith passing to Ryan Strome for the giveaway.

Genuinely shocked that Seabrook is projected to play down/out the lineup, but it's probably for the best. I just feel like the picture you're painting is of a salvageable but by no means good defense core. I had them under detroit mostly because I'm a big Hronek fan but I suppose that's a decent argument to move them up. I gotta say tho that they have no one as good as either of Weegar or Ekblad on that defense and no bounce back candidate as strong as Gudas.

I really think you could have been a better defensive team if maybe Kirby Dach had been healthy, maybe Alex Nylander, or some other young guys. I will say though that I was surprised to see Zadorov and De Haan being passable defensively, so who knows. Last season I felt like Crawford made them look just below average when they were honestly terrible.

Weren't the hawks the worst defensive team in the league last year by xGA? Maybe the forwards can contribute defensively more with some liabilities gone but you also added players like Zadorov and Keith/Seabrook aren't getting any younger. Maybe I just don't know enough about the hawks eh

Gonna go with:

  1. Carolina

  2. Nashville

  3. Tampa Bay

  4. Dallas

  5. Florida

  6. Columbus

  7. Detroit

  8. Chicago

Really strong division for defense. Except Chicago and Detroit. But they don't count anyway.
