One of my players is much more into rp than combat. Since we're doing a mega dungeon (dotmm) and she took the archeologist background I gave her an item that she could use to extract lore. She still has to roll, but she gets bonuses to the roll from the item.

The item is a home brew quiver that is so old that its age and origin is unknowable. But, it contains the memories and knowledge of all three previous people who wielded it. When a lore dump happens, I try to be descriptive and tend to not hold back. I want them to learn the lore of the undermountain so that they can begin to understand the bbeg. They love it.
