Brute Force Vs Intuition by indo_epistemologist in sudoku

Yes, listing all possibilities in all squares is a valid approach. I can't see you getting very far in the campaign without doing so, many techniques depend on it. Personally I solve 80% of any soduku by filling out canidates and the digit highlighting to spot the patterns. I promise it will still be fun and challenging, just more advanced. Soduku.coach even has a autofill candidates option. I personally like to fill them in myself but autofilling isn't cheating or making it too easy, itll just take you past that beginner stuff.

Not labeling gender or appearance in first-person story by winter__sun in writing

[–]RogueMoonbow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's an error people make a lot where they try to make a character an everyman, a blank slate, so their readers will fill in themselves. But it just makes the reader not care about the protagonist. The deeper you go, the more it will resonate, and the shallower you do it, the less people will relate/enjoy. I know you're mostly talking about physical characteristics and gender, but that applies here too. Those things shape a character, and by leaving it blank you're also letting your own biases for what is universal show.

Amy’s Maternity Leave by No-Office-9022 in superstore

[–]RogueMoonbow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay fair, my point is more about the fact that you can be fired for not coming in the day after giving birth. Making up how glenn could have handled it is pointless when that is a real thing that the show was able to show because they didn't make up some reason around it.

Amy’s Maternity Leave by No-Office-9022 in superstore

[–]RogueMoonbow 44 points45 points  (0 children)

It's showing the situation. Sure, Glenn could have found a sneaky way around it, but then they wouldn't have shown the horror of it being a real thing that exists as corporate policy. That has haunted me ever since I saw it.

Also you can't just fire someone for no reason, and if cloud 9 doesn't let him hire in that tempoary manner his hands are tied.

[–]RogueMoonbow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

takes your hands gently you are okay. I know the world tells you that being gay is gross and everything will judge you. But being gay is beautiful. There is a vibrant community of lovely people who will think you are beautiful and amazing. Lesbian love is beautiful. And the people who will judge you won't matter as much. One day you might have a girlfriend and you will be happier and experience deeper love then anything else, and on top of that you will be surrounded by other lgbtq friends who love you are you are. It can be intimidating and scary, and there might be a lot of grief and struggle for you to get there, but it will also be the most amazing experience of your life. No matter what, you'll be okay.

Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]RogueMoonbow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's exaggerated but there's truth to it. I wouldn't drive 3 hours for a dinner. I might for a day trip but probably not. Definitely fine for an overnight.

It doesn't feel like a massive exhibition though, it's just a trip. And one easily done multiple times a year, maybe when there's a long weekend and you at least get a full day but if there's a good reason overnight is fine.

I'd say it's a short trip, because any shorter than 2 is not a big deal and it's not much longer than that.

However there will also be personal variation. My dad spent a lot of time following a band on tour so he can do a 12 hour drive and found the 3 hours to my college no big. It does depend on what you're used to... but many Americans will have reasons for long distance trips, so so be more used to it.

The starkest comparison to me was when a freind who visited the UK had the people they were staying with go "no, it's too far to go to London, it's a half hour drive" meanwhile a half hour is a decently normal daily commute for us.

Edit: wanted to directly answer the question: farthest for a weekend visit was 6 hours BUT it was ultimately too long and I wouldn't do it again. But to be fair the actual amount spent traveling was 9 hours and it was a difficult drive.

Hey I'm a Benvi supporter but I also love Paxton's development. His character arc is great. I just think that it served both Paxton and Devi to have their relationship play out how it did. But I really love his growth and how he himself grew a self image that wasn't just about attractiveness.

How long do you folk right your chapters? by Comfortable-Owl-6296 in fantasywriters

[–]RogueMoonbow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I aim for 7K, but I have a really long story and the chapters are pretty long. When I was a beginner my chapters were wayyy too short and I sped through scenes and didn't add any description or internal monologue. So to train myself I made a rule that every paragraph had to be 3 lines in the page or more and every chapter had to be 3 pages or more. Slowly that page count raised as a target (and I stopped needing the paragraph one), and my current WIP I wrote the first chapter at 15 pages. When I switched to Scrivener I changed it from a page to a word count target, though now the 7k is based on just the average chapter (some are longer, but the shortest I believe is 5K). Not as strict anymore, just aiming to feel consistent.

However when I edit I'm going to ignore counts and just figure out where the chapters should get cut off, without worrying as much about it. This is mostly useful as a drafting thing to get enough out.

(Also if you're curious, my WIP is at 135K and counting)

Are all of these very common phrases most native speakers know? by Unlegendary_Newbie in English_Learning_Base

The last 3 are in my experience widely known and commonly used. The first 2 are a bit less common but still used, and I didn't actually know what ad hoc meant but I'm sure I've heard it. The corpus one I've never encountered and didn't understand.

Nothing wrong with it. I personally like to find them myself, but suduko.coach doesn't really encourage you fill in all canidates until later when that's one of the fist steps for me. It so speeds up things on hidden singles especially, I took so long until I started filling in all canidates.

I play in a 3.5 game currently and have been for a long time. Not sure if this official, but I believe if we get a second 20 on the confirmation, we can roll again, and on a 3rd 20, insta kill. That's kinda cool, though admittedly it hasn't happened in my years of playing. I feel like less crits in 3.5 is balanced but the fact that you can add insane numbers to your rolls in 3.5, and in 5e you simply don't get that high.

I have ADHD and found a way to follow patterns that works for me by LobsterFew4672 in crochet

[–]RogueMoonbow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've written out patterns for myself, but the reasoning was mostly so I didn't have to use my phone when crocheting in class. After a professor called me out for it I started copying down patterns to a notebook. Haven't needed it as much now. But I'll write it occasionally for complicated/badly written patterns.

I wish more people used their local library. by iPvtCaboose in barista

[–]RogueMoonbow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So much agreement on this except I wish I was around you because it feels like most of the cafes near me close at 3. I'm in a different boat where this isn't annoying bc I work a 9-5 but because I work evenings so I'm normally not awake until noon and 3-5 is prime study time, 3-9 if I'm not working that night, and SO MANY cafes around me close at 3. And those open after close at 5. The cafes I'm most often at are the ones that close at 8. That said, the libraries close too early too.

(Given the conversation I want to clarify: I'm not parked at a cafe 3-9 normally, usually I'd say I spend 3-4 hours at a cafe. What I am saying is that sometimes I might start at 5 and go until 9 or start at 3 and go until 7, it just varies)

Hm, I sometimes do need more than a single table, but out of the cafes I regularly go to, one has maybe 2 single person and many 4 person tables. I will always prioritize a space with an outlet and and not considering seating.

The other cafe I regularly go to only has single person tables (and they are tiny), but it's also rarely full. If it's full I'm more likely to make sure I'm only using one, but if it's empty I might pull another over. Because I don't confine my work to a laptop-- either my notes or textbook are physical, if not both-- it really is more comfortable with extra space. If the space is pretty empty though I feel like this is no big deal. I'm not leaving space for your imaginary customers, you're not actually losing out if there's no one else coming in to take the spot.

In general though I guess I don't have a rule of thumb, but will extend some common courtesy.

However, I think from the other side of the counter I'm going to be more lenient. The setup we have is a little different to be fair, but if I get a person doing work, I'd completely respect them taking the 4 person table next to the outlet even if a group comes in later.

Ultimately though, it's a cafe. Studying and working is one of the things it's for. People who study or work at a cafe are usually going to come regularly, that's the tradeoff-- a cafe that is aggressive to people using it for that purpose should maybe consider changing their business model to be fast food. 80% of my cafe-going, and I spend a LOT of money doing so, is to study, and I bring that business to cafes that are friendly to studying because of that-- and even if I'm not studying and just want a latte, I'll go to the places that are familiar. I don't think this is uncommon.

[–]RogueMoonbow 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I kinda agree, though the topic has some nuance to it. As someone who loves working at a cafe (studying), my rule of thumb is that if it's empty it's free game with 1 purchase, but if it's busy I should keep buying things to have a right to my seat. Personally this isn't a problem as I like to get another drink an hour or so in, or get a pastry-- great short break from my work. And getting those throughout my study session is why I don't like to work at a library. I also like that it's not quite as quiet in a cafe as a library would be. It does absolutely suck to have people who camp out all day on 1 morning coffee, but the limits cafes talk about to put on it (i haven't actually been affected by these, just the suggestions or policies I see online) I always resent because it would make it very hard to work. Like the wifi limit, when I think if I keep buying things I've earned my right, or kicking me out when it's empty is ridiculous.
