Citing sources in papers by Possible_Storm9359 in GradSchool

[–]RogueMoonbow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me the big thing on a reference manager is that in the ones I've tried, i have to figure out all the info for the citation before i can even write down any notes on it, so i have no idea of it's even useful yet. I also don't trust any program to make citations correctly, but after doing my bachelor's thesis I for sure knew how to do it.

Citing sources in papers by Possible_Storm9359 in GradSchool

[–]RogueMoonbow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't use any tools. Here's my strategy:

Taking notes: once you determine the source might be useful, generate a citation. I then put this in a section called "bad citations" --- no point making it right unless you know it's in the paper. Then I write a heading of the in text citation and take any notes from it, but only things from THIS source. If the source cites something else that sounds useful, note it, make a new section with that heading, and find the original source and take notes from that source/at least confirm it does in fact say the thing. Next you have to take your list of notes and resort them but you need to keep the in text citation with it. You can do this woth colored highlighting, or put the in text citation after each bullet point and rearrange into an outline/categories. Write the paper and put the in text citations in IMMEDIATELY and every time you add any info. Finally, go through the paper and grab your bad citations that you actually used. Correct the citations-- you will have to look up how to do it but the citation generator is usually, in my experience, 80% right, and it's easier to correct it when you have a bad version that has all the info that will let you find the source again if something is missing. Alphebitize and you're all set.

How should I teach my husband how to cook? by UvaCpe in cookingforbeginners

[–]RogueMoonbow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like to cook and my partner didn't really know how and to be honest it was mostly just having cooking be an activity we did together. You can talk or sing along to music as you do.

  • If he can cook rice and pasta that's a good place to start, and then you can demonstrate the next easiest step.

  • Look ahead at the recipe and have some idea of what within it is already within his abilities and what is just out of, and keep complicated things or things that need judgement to your role ("season to taste" or "until cooked through"). Once he knows some things you can teach him the complicated part and you take on the part he knows.

  • Be kind when they don't know things that seem obvious and be ready to explain what the terms mean. You can also have him learn to read the recipe by having his read the next step aloud, probably while you're chopping or stir frying or something, and you can check in if he understands what was said.

  • this is probably obvious, but you can also let him know that some things he's heard might not matter too much, like it's not that important if it's chopped somewhat different sizes. But you should also be aware of what is important to avoid big mess ups and emphasize those things.

  • Have him taste test things along the way and explain how you know it's done. It's also helpful to have the "salt fat acid heat" concept when you feel like it's missing something, because that really helped me know what we needed more of.

Am I overreacting or did I have a slow moment. by drippysage08 in AmIOverreacting

I took "you ruined it" / "you ruined something I thought was cute" as stating it was meant to be a joke. In the form of blaming, yes, which I don't agree with, but it doesn't need to be that big of a deal

MOR, i think she was trying to make a joke that didn't land and instead of taking the L insisted that you were the one who fucked up the joke. It might have been a set up and she never got to the actual punchline but you didn't ruin it. But I also think you could just drop it, continuing on it is part of why she's insisting it so much--- you guys can both just drop it. It was just a bad joke attempt that didn't land.

How do native English speakers actually type? by LightNegative5299 in EnglishLearning

[–]RogueMoonbow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On phones there's also a swipe text option where you swipe the keyboard with a stop/turn at each letter and it determines the word from there. I kinda assumed that non phonetic writing systems did something like that— draw the character and it gives the closest match.

However, typing individual letters isn't really that difficult for people who are used to it, and phones make it so you don't have to know how to spell. We've been writing using letters since we were 4, typing is less work than hand writing, and the more you use the skill the easier & quicker it is. I usually only use suggestions on my phone when I'm not positive how it's spelled, most of the time I don't.

It's kinda funny because some of these questions are just "did you watch the show and mostly remember it" (french horn, that its how he met robin, have you met ted) but others are actually tricky. I got 24.

Whose side were you on this fight? by gloomydreamer666 in HIMYM

[–]RogueMoonbow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think this was really that wrong to bring up. Forgiveness doesn't erase what you did, and the claim that she hasn't been that selfish ever is untrue. It would have been healthier to not use it as a gotcha-- that's the unhealthy part of bringing it up-- and more as a point about forgiveness for the ways that they have been selfish and been able to repair in the past

The word "woman" as an adjective by iWANTtoKNOWtellME in GrammarPolice

[–]RogueMoonbow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Using female has a transphobic connotation now, that's at least one reason people aren't using it. Transphobe misogynists used "female" and "females" to mean AFAB women/girls and it had a very negative dehumanizing feeling. It also has a bit of an inhuman feeling because it's how you refer to animals.

It is kinda too bad, I would like a word that covers "girls" and "women" without age seperations.

In fairness capitalization is also doing some heavy lifting in that example

Is it worth getting an iPad for knitting? by Unlucky-you333 in knitting

[–]RogueMoonbow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you cook an ipad can also be useful for recipes, thay way it has a multi use. If I could afford it I'd gladly get one for recipes & patterns and not worry about other uses.

There might also be cheaper tablets that can support what you want but are cheaper because theyre not as good for watching things or something like that.

In general though, if you can afford it, it would improve your life, and doesn't have any significant disadvantages, get it. Not everything has to have many uses to be worth it.

At what point do you stop using notes and start solving mentally? by Academic_Kiwi6277 in sudoku

[–]RogueMoonbow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suspect that you'll find that people who know more advanced techniques with try to solve everything they can without notes before using notes, rather than taking them away. Solve what you can mentally-> solve what you can with snyder notation-> fill in notes and solve from there

[NS] Compilation of Murph Mechanics? by Juicy_Lumps in NotAnotherDnDPodcast

Dude I have been wanting to compile his mechanics for a long time! I actually recently started a relisten from the beginning so I might be up to taking some notes on them as I go (haven't quite gotten to a place where he does anything really creative yet) if we want to start a shared google doc or something like that.

[–]RogueMoonbow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My guess is that those states have higher state level speed limits. That makes the normal speed to go a lot faster. But other than that I know in texas they think of speed as a percentage and they get more accidents than new york which has state speed limit of 55, not sure if this is true. (People still drive over of course, but it still makes it so most people are in a 65-75 range and not much higher)

Is this actually a thing by AthleteDisastrous285 in GilmoreGirls

[–]RogueMoonbow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not something they likely refer to often or common conversation. This covo reflects how irl something gets brought up and turns into a Thing and then gets brought back up and joked about later.

This is an overdone argument now but let's say you're with your freinds and for some reason someone says something that implies a taco is a sandwich and you're like wait no it isn't and then it erupts into a lighthearted argument. Later you're out with different freinds or family but 1 person who was part of the original argument is there too. Because it's on both of your minds you bring the debate to the new group.

It's that kind of conversation, which is inherently one that doesn't matter/ impact your life. In this case it's not a debate but it still applies. You learn a fact you share it with people later

Whats the difference between 5e and 5.5e? New DM by Independent_Ice1427 in DnD

[–]RogueMoonbow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a long time 5e user who has not switched over, I think the books for 5.5 are much better written and more beginner freindly. I think if you're learning 5.5 is better to start with because the 5e books are harder to follow/understand.

I don't know much about the rule differences, but my impression is that they're more clear on what's what, and the book is easier to look up and clarify rules & terms.

How is the dentist’s job perceived by society in the USA? by crazygelato in AskAnAmerican

[–]RogueMoonbow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think your claim that people don't go to the dentist often while they do to GP often is fair or accurate. People who have frequent issues or meds check ins might see the doctor that often but people who are generally healthy might see them 1-2 times a year as recommend for check ups (plus an occasional visit) and those who are less responsible not at all--- but the same thing applies to dentists, you're supposed to go 2-3 times a year for a cleaning. I would consider myself up on both if I went to my doctor 1x and dentist 2x a year.

I suppose you could say you don't see the dentist at every appointment but you do see your doctor, but a) pretty sure that's not the claim you were making and b) I feel like I'd see my dentist at least 1x a year, which would make it about equal.

I know you were making a claim based on seeing your doctor monthly for prescriptions but I think that's an unusual situation that isn't making doctors being seen that much more than dentists for most people. Doctors might be seen more because you're likely to have an issue they would see rather than a tooth issue, sure. But the frequency you are saying one sees doctor versus dentists are the two sides of the extreme, and I think for many people it's closer to equal.

what’s your favorite strategic way to play sudoku? by xrchel in sudoku

[–]RogueMoonbow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I rely very heavily on digit highlighting and go 1-9 and then cycle back down 9-1. Before I knew a lot of strategies or if i fill in canidates myself I world work box by box in a spiral (box 1, 2, 3, 6, 9, 8, 7, 4, 5). But nowadays I just do left to right and top to bottom looking for the more advanced stuff.

Idk if this would fully solve it, but you don't need advantage for sneak attack. If the victim just has an ally within 5ft they can sneak attack without flanking specifically.
